Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Anthony Goldstein and Susan Bones
When: Wednesday, we'll say around -- 7?
Where: Susan and Zacharias's flat.
What: Preparing baked goodies for the party.
Rating: PG, I'm sure.
Status: In Progress.

For once, Anthony found himself leaving Kensington Central on time. The library had just hired an additional technician last week, and having noticed that Anthony more often than not stayed after closing even when it wasn't required, he offered to help. (Said he could use the extra pay anyway, even if it wasn't time and a half.) After thanking him for the favour, he left through one of the side entrances and made his way to a nearby empty alley. He scanned the narrow area first before pulling a small scrap of paper from his pocket, the one he'd written Susan's address on earlier.

No, he wasn't an exceptional cook and he couldn't bake very well, but he'd picked up a few instructional books at work, hoping that they might make up for his inadequacy in the kitchen. He looked down at the address once more, then apparated directly inside the flat.

She had known he was coming tonight, even though he hadn't specified a time. She was probably expecting him later, though.

"Susan?" he called from his place in the living room, just so he didn't surprise her. He then made his way to the kitchen, shifting the strap of his messenger bag off his shoulder so that he might could pull out a few of the books he'd brought.

Susan was in her bedroom just tidying up because this morning it had been a bit of a panic to get her work clothes as she had not remembered where she put them. They were of course out in the open and now that she had the time she was cleaning up the mess she had made. Dinner was already tidied and she was just putting the finishing touches on her room when she heard a faint pop, it couldn't be Anthony could it? Susan was expecting him this evening but admittedly not this early but she didn't mind. This meant she could cook earlier than she had been expecting. Lately Susan had been bitten by the baking bug and it just didn't seem to go away. She felt like all she did was go to work, talk about baking, or bake. Oh well she was enjoying herself.

Hearing her name her suspicion that Anthony was here was definitely cleared up as she heard his voice. "Anthony?" She called questioning just a little as she rushed down the hall. "Hello!" She said with excitement as she saw him nearing the kitchen. "Splendid we can get started early," she nodded her head then her eyes fell on the books. "What are those?" Cookbooks, did he not trust her skill and her own books? Or did he not trust her to teach him? "You ready to bake?" She said rather cheerfully.

"These?" he asked, then looked down at the books in his hands. "Just a few instructional books.. not for you of course, but just to assure that I don't botch up anything we start," he said before setting the books on her tabletop, then rolled up his sleeves. "It's sad, really. I've been living alone for two years now and I can't even master any simple dishes, let alone some easy baking. But I'm ready to try tonight, if you're willing to be practice patience with me," he said, flashing her a half-smile.

"How many guests do you and Zacharias expect to have, anyway? If baking starts to put you out, I wouldn't mind bringing something. It'd be store bought rather than home made, but still."

Instructional books? Oh well if he thought they would help. "If you think it will help I am willing to let you use the instructional books. I am quite a good teacher, or I like to think too." Susan grinned at him as he rolled up his sleeve and she started to pull her hair back into a pony tail to get ready for this baking. "I would be willing to teach you to bake and cook if you like, but no promises that it will make you a great cook but I am willing to try." She grinned as she moved into the kitchen starting to pull out the things she would need. "I was thinking of starting with a cake."

"I am not sure actually," she said as she shrugged her shoulders. "I would love some store bought to help out, I doubt anyone would notice. I shall see how tired of baking I get and drop you a message." Susan was glad Anthony stopped by because it was more fun to bake with a friend.

"I'm sure you are," he agreed, flashing her a smile to know he meant it. He hadn't meant to insult her ability, though it was likely she was only teasing him. It was simply for back-up, just in case she became to preoccupied to help him step-by-step. He followed her, watching as she pulled out a big bowl for mixing and a spoon-- and then the ingredients.

"All right, but what kind? ... And just so I'm forewarned, this isn't going to turn into a frosting war, is it? I've heard horror stories," he teased, grinning at her as he moved towards her fridge. "How many eggs? Shouldn't it be about... three? Or maybe four?" He took out two, then awaited further instruction.

Susan set about finding all the ingredients and turned when he asked what kind, "Chocolate chip." She held up the bag of chocolate chips. When he mentioned the frosting war Susan blushed as she put the chocolate chips down on the counter. "Nah, no frosting wars. I promise." Susan looked at him and laughed a little. "I don't want to clean up the mess again."

"Well we are making a double batch so we are doubling the ingredients, so four." She instructed as she got out the measuring spoons. She started to open up the flour getting ready to double 2 1/4 cups of flour. "We need the flour first with baking soda and salt in one bowl, then sugar and butter in another. Then we add the eggs to the butter and sugar, with vanilla and then add the flour." It didn't sound to difficult or so she hoped.

"I can't blame you, especially when you take into consideration that Terry was involved," he said, shaking his head lightly. He didn't catch her blush, and even if he had, it wasn't in his nature to pry.

"Double batch, okay." He watched her carefully, taking mental notes as she explained the necessary ingredients and what order they came in. Really, it was a fairly simple recipe, but as he'd mentioned to her earlier, working in the kitchen had never really been his forte. He'd always offered to help out with his mum when he was still living at home, but she'd more often than not insist that he make himself useful elsewhere. Perhaps setting the table before calling his dad into the kitchen.

As she seem occupied with the first bowl, he decided to take up the other one. "How much sugar, exactly...?" he asked, trailing off slightly as he reached for a measuring cup. "And would it be-- the entire stick of butter?" he asked, eyebrows raised as he held it out for her to see. Honestly, he had no idea what he was doing. "Surely not. ... Or is it?"

"It was fun, but I think it would lose something if it was an event that continues to take place." Susan said with a shrug as she started to set things up in some sort of order, her only hope that everything could be put out on the counter and have enough room for two sets of hands. Anthony may not be experienced and could get in her way but she was just glad to have the company he did appear the type to eat things before they even made it into the oven. She liked to do that at times but when she had something to make the food for it was kind of annoying.

"Well for the sugar use this cup twice," she handed him the measuring cup for the 3/4. She smiled at him. "It is two cups of butter." She said and just cut off some of the butter. "That was all we needed." She plopped the butter into a bowl for him as she went back to the bowl she had. "So you just stir in the sugar."
