Martin didn't have any plans for the evening, but even the plans that he didn't have didn't include the community center party. At least, they wouldn't have if he'd chosen on his own. He was wickedly adept at balancing the need for social interaction with the need to do what he wanted to do.
People were really better off not asking about the things he did.
Social interaction and observation were a solid half of how he'd done his work back home and old habits... well, for Martin Collier, old habits never died -- which was exactly why he was mingling, drink in hand, and making casual conversation with anybody who stopped to say something to him.
