It occurred to me that newspaper and online news articles almost always have bad grammar in at least one part of the article: the headline.

Really, I am so used to the unique grammar of headlines that I often don't even notice that they are almost invariably in pidgin English. The headlines usually manage to convey what the article is about, but if you actually try to speak in newspaper headlines you'd sound pretty daft. Try it some time. It's a lot of fun.

Here's a few examples of headlinespeak that I swiped from feeds:

Polls Show Obama-McCain Race Tight
Navy Missile Intercept Successful
Arrest Made In Spears Stalking Case
Valedictorian Set For Graduation, Deportation
Stocks Drubbed On Jobs And Oil

I think there ought to be an annual Speak And Write In Headlines Day. That would rule. :)
