Natasha would be lying if she said she hadn't been avoiding Steve for the past few days. She knew that their lives were an open book here and she had come to cope with that, not without the help of Rogers himself, but he had dropped hints in the past suggesting that he didn't experience, or at least remember, everything that happened with the Winter Solider. Bucky.
She felt guilty. It wasn't that she was avoiding him for personal reasons, personal reasons never got in the way of Natasha doing what she had to do, they were frivolous things and they had already caused enough problems between them. Enough tension. She was avoiding him because, although she would fight by his side and willingly die for Rogers, if she had to, she was far from a professional in the 'friends' area. If it were her, she would have wanted to be left alone. Whenever she was approach in a state of distress she felt as if she was being pitied, and she hated nothing more than pity. The last thing she wanted to do was put Steve in that situation, especially right now.
However, he had pulled away days ago. He was distant and barely spoke at all if she tried to reach out, and knowing him he was running around killing things and making bad decisions as he tried to process everything that was going on. She gave him enough time, and she couldn't put it off anymore. It looked like she had to finally play the 'concerned friend or whatever-we-are' card.
She didn't warn him that she was coming over because he would have probably just left, so instead she pounded on his door, waited a few seconds, and tried the knob hoping that it would open before he had a chance to escape through a window if he was trying to avoid her.
"Steve?" She called out his name. "It's me. Are you home?"
