It was quiet — too quiet — when Melissa woke up. She noticed immediately that she was still in her clothes. It took only a second longer to process the fact that she was no longer at home, but instead in what looked like an eerily empty Wal-Mart. Out of reflex, as she got to her feet, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling of finding herself in a completely different place than where she'd been what felt like moments ago, Melissa called out. "Boys...?" She picked up the tablet device she found on the bench beside her and got to her feet. Might as well put it away while she was at it. Chewing her bottom lip momentarily as she tried to remember how she'd gotten there, Melissa moved down the electronics aisle toward the front of the store and away from the bench in the lay-away department in the back where she'd woken up. "Scott? Isaac?" There should've been the sound of registers and music. There should have been more lights. There should've been more people. "Hello?" The tablet lit up in her hands inexplicably and Melissa paused just in front of the televisions on display — none of which were actually turned on — to look down at it. "Okay...that's...weird," she murmured before noting the one icon on its home page and tapping it to see that there appeared to be some kind of network. "...what the hell," she muttered, shaking her head, as she typed out a message and then started walking again. |
