Little lies [George, Nina]
Little lies
Fandom: Being Human (UK)
Characters: George, Nina
Spoilers: Post-Season 3
He tells her he loves her. He says it often enough, she nearly believes it -but she's not that naive anymore. She knows what this is, what this means -and even if he feels so guilty it can last them a lifetime, this is not exactly what she wants. What they need.
It is her who walks away, it is Nina who takes the first step. She tells him -again- that she has to leave. The house isn't safe enough, she says. You're not safe enough. I have to think of the baby. And the moment she sees his eyes water, tears striving to show, she knows this is the right thing to do. Even if it's hard, she tells herself. Even if it hurts.
They're not meant for each other. He has this new house, he has Annie and the burning memories of Mitchell and the stake, he has the courage she lacks to stay and fight and risk. She can't take this anymore -she can't be another person, another woman. She needs to go.
He tries to carry her luggage, 'till we reach the station, he says. She shrugs and lets him do it, even if she's strong enough -she's stronger than him, in fact, and it is quite funny, watchim him struggle with everything and just walking next to him, her belly round and full and he looking at it every minute.
I'll send you a message. And pics. When he -or she- is born, she says. He nods.
Take care, and kisses her on the cheek, and Nina feels like crying because she's not sure, she still wants him. She still wants him to want her, and that's never going to happen, and it hurts, walking away. Being alone.
I'll be alright, she says. It is you, and Tom and Annie, you know -it is you who have to be careful.
And suddenly, when they're at the station and there's all the right noises, people rushing and speakers and claxons and everything, when they're about to turn away, she thinks this might be the last time she sees him, and cries a little.
Goodbye, she says. Love you. And she prays he won't say it, he won't lie again and make everything worse.
Love you too, he replies.
(And it's fine, this time it is okay. For once, he means it, in his own way.)
