Title: Night Breezes
Fandom: Merlin
Characters/Pairing: implied Morgana/Gwen
Rating: G
Word Count: 270
Challenge/Prompt: #117 - beautiful
Summary: "I'm here," Gwen says
"I'm here," Gwen says, rousing herself from sleep. Morgana sits up in her bed, spine straight as a ramrod, her eyes wide and dark.
"It's all right," says Gwen, bringing a candle closer.
"Gwen," says Morgana, turning her head, tilting it to one side like a bird, raising her chin. She's smiling.
"Gwen," says Morgana. "You're so beautiful," she says, her voice low and sly, laced with what someone who didn't know her lady so well as Gwen might label spite, venom.
"Thank you," says Gwen.
"So beautiful," Morgana says, raising her hand to Gwen's face. Her fingers are twisted and bent, seized up like claws, and Gwen reminds herself to breathe, stays as still as she can.
Morgana freezes, then cries out, her mouth open as she falls back, limp. "Gwen?" she calls. "Gwen?"
"I'm here," says Gwen. She sits down on the bed and Morgana crawls to her, laying her head in Gwen's lap, her body wracked with sobs. Gwen strokes her hair, murmuring soothingly. These aren't just nightmares, she knows, but she doesn't dare contemplate what that might mean.
"Promise you won't ever leave me," Morgana says, her voice muffled against Gwen's thigh. "Whatever happens, you won't leave me." She looks up, her face streaked with tears. "Promise me."
"I promise," says Gwen, without hesitation. "I will never leave you." And she means it.
In this moment, she means it.
One day, what will seem like a thousand years from now, Morgana will smile, and Gwen, sick with guilt, will remember and say to herself, In that moment, I meant it.
But, by then, it won't matter.
