Clarity (Criminal Minds, prompt #56)
Title: Clarity
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Characters/Pairing: Elle
Rating: G
Word Count: 208
Challenge/Prompt: #56 - embrace
Summary: The thing about dying.
The thing about dying is that it makes everything so simple, so clear. When Elle came back, she tried to pretend, tried to believe again. She told herself that it would pass, that none of what she was feeling was real, that if she just worked hard enough she'd get back to being her old self.
This isn't me, she'd say to herself, in the night, in the early hours of the morning. This is all a lie.
Trouble was, she knew perfectly well it wasn't. Knew that, in fact, the truth was the exact opposite of what she kept telling herself. This, this was real. Her life before? What she strived for, what she believed in? That was the lie.
Dying makes everything extraneous, everything unneeded, fall away. Like magic, like being reborn. Elle could see what mattered, could see what needed to be done, the path she would have to take, and the longer she kept pretending, the worse it would be.
The wild night took her in, embraced her, made her its own. Showed her truth.
The shrink has given her a journal, told her to write every day. CLARITY, she prints in large, capital letters. She nods to herself and picks up her gun.
