Mona Lisa (Harsh Realm, G, prompt #47)
Title: Mona Lisa
Fandom: Harsh Realm
Characters/Pairing: Inga Fossa
Rating: G
Word Count: 181
Challenge/Prompt: #47 - mystery
Summary: Inga cultivates mystery.
Inga quite deliberately cultivates mystery. She's as enigmatic and confusing as she can reasonably get away with. It's practical, mostly. When you're playing both sides it doesn't do to be in any way transparent. And it intrigues others, it fascinates them. Her persona. The woman who knows everything but will never tell, will never reveal her secrets.
It's an old and perhaps unimaginative ploy, the silence and the Mona Lisa smile, but it works. It works perfectly. They look to her, the men on both sides, they defer to her. Even Santiago, who doesn't hesitate make an example of his staff, watches her, studies her, asks her opinion. He listens to her.
Sometimes, just occasionally, it feels like she's screaming inside, trying to keep up the act, trying to stay alive, to be always essential, irreplaceable.
Not often, though, not anymore. It's taken work, and it's cost her things she chooses not to remember, but, for the most part, she's become Inga Fossa, all the way through, serene and wise and all-knowing.
The mask doesn't slip. She won't let it slip.
