Happy Endings (NCIS, prompt #49)
Title: Happy Endings
Fandom: NCIS
Characters/Pairing: Tony/Jeanne
Rating: G
Word Count: 246
Challenge/Prompt: #49 -wish
Summary: She never believed in fairy tales.
She never thought of herself as one of those women, you know, the ones who've read too many romance novels and think that some guy is going to show up on a white horse and sweep them off their feet and it'll be roses and hearts and happily ever after.
With a father like hers, it wasn't as if she was ever going to grow up believing that a man could solve all your problems.
But she wasn't bitter, like some of her friends. She was practical, she thought. Independent. Her life was her own and if she found someone to share it with, then that would be wonderful. If not, well, that was the way things were sometimes.
And then, of course, she met Tony. And, foolishly, allowed herself to hope, to dream. Here was a good man, a man who loved her, cherished her, would keep her safe.
He loved her. And he lied anyway.
"No," he says, and the elevator doors close, and Jeanne bites her lip and closes her eyes, willing herself to keep it inside, to hold it together.
Because he's still lying. Because, after all this, after every last thing, he's still trying to protect her.
"No," he says, and the elevator doors close and Jeanne feels herself break and shatter, feels the soft, hurt places of her heart become raw with pain. Something inside her changes, re-shapes itself into a form that feels black and harsh and permanent.
It's not like she ever believed in happy endings, she tells herself.
