After waking early on Sunday morning, Lavender willed herself to have enough energy to go for a run. She did so grudgingly, thinking of breakfast even as she ran. When she returned home, she showered and fried some of the bacon-like meat that she had bought in the market to make a sandwich. Grilling it would have been healthier, she thought ruefully, but she was feeling indulgent after her run. That and a cup of tea from her stash of old-world tealeaves seemed like a much better start to the day than running.
As she munched her sandwich and tried not to get her datapad greasy as she flipped through the latest news updates, Lavender checked to see if there were any upcoming events. A friendly rugby match over at Settlement Two was planned for the afternoon, but something else caught her eye. The Ark tour. Between the basic security training that Lavender had received upon arriving and escorting the new arrivals between settlements, she had a good lay of the land, although she didn't know the areas outside of Settlement One particularly well. She was getting to know Settlement Two a little from visiting her parents and she could theoretically find her way around Settlement Three owing to the almost-identical layout, but there were still plenty of places that she didn't know at all. The Ark was one of them.
Lavender knew where the Ark was, of course, but she had never spent any time there. Despite her activity so far today, it was barely after nine, which still gave her over an hour before the tours were closed at eleven. She tidied herself up, leaving her dirty plate in the sink to clean up later, and strapping her wand into its holster, as had become her routine when going to work. She left her hair down, partially covering her scars and hoping that her hair would finish drying quickly.
There were more people at the Ark than she had expected, mostly families taking advantage of no school at the weekend. The view of the mountains alone was worth the trip, Lavender decided, taking in the stunning panorama that Zealand offered. It was breathtaking and she wished that she could capture it, but she didn't think that any camera would be able to do it justice.
