With a satisfied smirk, Finbar turned off his datapad. He had been about to send a message to Penelope asking her to come join in the celebration that had started when the Settlement-wide alert about the killer having been found dead, and more importantly who that killer was. None of the Quigleys had been on Zealandia when the murders had happened, but he had seen the outcome. Of course, there was the whole ordeal with the littlest Spinnet’s husband, though that wasn’t directly related to the murders, but he had seen how Pen would wear herself down trying to come up with a solution to how best to capture whoever was putting the Settlement security on constant alert and on more than one occasion had more or less tricked her into actually eating, not just so she could continue without falling apart, but also so he could spend some time with her.
Emptying his tumbler of Ogden’s Finest, he poured himself another; easily flipping the bottle to refill Kieran’s when he simply held up his empty glass. Oh, the house had been full of loud people before the announcement, and there had been plenty of the local beer and spirits passed around, but after the announcement, two of the bottles they had brought from the Old World. Though this called for celebration they still saved some of the collectible bottles for a later occasion.
There was a bit of a swagger to his walk when he went to the kitchen and set about mixing up the pancake batter he had promised Pen. Unless she had changed drastically since the last time he had seen her – which he doubted – then she hadn’t eaten yet, and pancakes were not only something he could go for right now, it was, possibly, also one of the few things he could actually cook and have the result come out edible.
