It wasn't like Peter hadn't killed before. One doesn't become a Death Eater by not proving one's self, and usually that meant with a kill. Or two. The thing was, Peter wasn't exactly skilled at the Killing Curse. Of course he had used it. He knew he could use it. But when he did, it was on nameless Muggles. You have to mean the killing curse when you use it, and Peter found that more difficult when he knew the victim. When he realized he was going to start taking out Order members, he devised some other plan for their deaths. Some might come down to the killing curse, but that all depended on what led up to it. The Tonkeses weren't officially in the Order, but they had their ties and Ted Tonkes was Bellatrix's brother-in-law. Peter knew how much she despised him, especially given that he was a muggleborn and stole her sister out from the Black family. So Ted became Peter's first target. It would be swift, and it would be quiet, and it would be easy. He canvassed the neighborhood for several hours and waited until he saw Andromeda leave the house. Good, Peter thought. He didn't want the messy things up right now. Andromeda wasn't on his list, at least, not yet. Maybe eventually he would take her out, when she was more vulnerable or if she didn't change her ways, but right now? Right now he wanted to get rid of Ted and be done with it. Peter left moments after Andromeda did, only to return moments later, at a better angle, now in his robes and mask. He entered the house from behind. There were wards, strong ones, but he tackled them. It took him slightly longer than he wanted, but he managed to squeeze through a swishy part of a ward and squeeze in through the back garden. The house was quiet. Peter knew Ted was home. He found him in a small office off the back bedroom, poring over an open newspaper. It wasn't even the Prophet but a Muggle paper. His wand sat on the desk, within reach, but not close enough. Peter silently banished it. The movement startled Ted, and he stood, knocking over the chair. Peter wasn't the type to start up a conversation before killing someone, but Ted wanted to. A distraction, he knew, was what Tonks was trying to do. Peter's gaze shifted from Ted to the open window to the door back to Ted. His breathing was shallow as he cast the Cruciatus at Ted and watched him hit the floor, his head off the corner of his desk, hard and writhing. With a sharp slice of his wand, he tore the skin at Ted's throat. Then he sent a small vial of potent poison into Ted's mouth as he already struggled for breath. It was quick-acting, irreversible, perfect for a clean, sudden death (without using the Killing Curse, of course). As Ted sputtered, Peter slipped out again. Before he apparated away, he pointed his wand at the sky above the house. "Morsemodre," he whispered, then disappeared with a crack. |
