"Do you think she's waking up?"
"It's hard to tell, isn't it?
"Look at her eyes, though! It's moving!"
Susan could hear the hushed chatter, but wasn't entirely sure where she was as her eyes finally opened. Her gaze instantly fell on her mother and sister, who were talking in a quiet whisper to one another.
"Mum, look!" Samantha's voice sprung into action and Susan could feel the corners of her mouth twist upwards into a smile. She'd missed her sister. She'd seen her sister a few hours ago — wait, was it only hours? Or had it been days? Or weeks? Or months?
"Sam," she croaked, her voice a little hoarse. "Hey."
Susan tried to move her hand, but found that she couldn't. It seemed as though it was stuck in its position, but as hard as she tugged, she couldn't. She frowned, looking to see what the obstruction was, but couldn't really see anything in the way. Confused, she turned to her mum, hoping she'd be able to provide the answers.
"Invisible restraints," Paulina responded, as though she could read her daughter's thoughts. "Until you —," a sharp intake of breath, "Until you're better."
Susan still didn't understand, and she turned her head to one side, as though she were waiting for a further explanation. But her eyes fell to her hands again, before she'd caught sight of the bandages on her left wrist.
And suddenly, everything came rushing back to her, and what she'd done just a few days prior. She shuddered at the thought, and frowned once again, before she turned back to her mother. "Mum, I didn't — that was just — they can't seriously think —"
"Until you're better," Paulina repeated, pursing her lips. She reached for her daughter's hand, giving it a firm squeeze before kissing the top of her head. "You'll be speaking to a Mind Healer soon, I suspect. Your Healer wanted to wait until you were awake before she could set you up with an appointment. They had you heavily sedated."
"How long —?" Susan couldn't finish her sentence.
But Samantha was quick to respond. "Only a few days. They had to move you to a more private portion of the hospital. And limit your visits from non-family members. A few of your friends came by," Samantha stated, with a smile. "But we couldn't let them see you. Sorry, Susie."
Susan barely managed a nod, before she let out an exasperated noise. "I'm hungry."
