Girlmonsters and feminist makeupping have to be my absolute favorite things. At its simplest level, girlmonstering is refusing to meet society's standards of pretty; it's using makeup to make yourself something out of society's nightmare. It's not fangs and blood (though sometimes it is) -- it's blue lipstick, green hair, red eyeshadow. It's what everyone you've ever known has told you is off-limits in terms of makeup. It's using makeup to make yourself feel pretty, but not by society's standards -- it's what you want. Sometimes it's making yourself ugly, because sometimes that's easier. And really, sometimes it's just not putting foundation on. This is a fantastic post about feminist makeupping and why some people do it. It's not saying that you shouldn't want to look pretty and it's honestly not for everyone -- but for those who would girlmonster, here are your fall 2012 essentials! blood drip nails to scare off public transport hasslers. bold eyebrows, in every sense of the word. floral doc martens because flowers are awesome, and so is kicking ass. harnesses to keep the beast at bay~ occ heroine lip tar because you're the hero of the story. |
