I wear makeup pretty much every day, but my needs are pretty different from yours, since I usually do a natural look and have more to cover up. However! I find it really fun to learn more about makeup, and there are a lot of resources out on the wide world of the internet, and I am going to talk/link at length.
Temptalia is a really good resource to get started, and there are a lot of YouTube beauty bloggers who do tutorial videos. My favorite is Michelle Phan, who is crazy huge now and also founded Ipsy, which is a great resource for figuring out what works for you. Basically, for $10/month, you get a grab bag of deluxe beauty samples (usually priced at more than $10). There are other services like this like BirchBox, but I've found that BirchBox tends to be more skincare focused, and also I like the cute little bags that the Ipsy stuff comes in. Anyway, I find Michelle Phan's videos pretty helpful because we have similar coloring, so I can guess what stuff might look like on me. There are a bunch of popular Black YouTube makeup gurus, so maybe you can find someone who fits you?
I was really surprised when I first discovered it, but Reddit is actually a great resource for learning more about makeup! I kind of figured the whole site was a cesspool of Men's Rights Activists and dudebros, but there are a few boards like r/makeupaddiction where you can post questions, ask for feedback on your look, or see what other people are using. You might also like r/indiemakeupandmore, which is a board for smaller, independent makeup companies, most of which will post ingredient lists, and they usually provide higher quality products for cheaper than you'd get at like Sephora (admittedly, most indie eyeshadows are loose powder, which has a learning curve). Shiro Cosmetics, for example, is a vegan, cruelty-free brand with a lot of nerd-influenced stuff, and I like them a lot. I think you might like their lipgloss.
If you're kind of eh about foundation but still want to try evening out your skin tone, something like a BB cream or a mineral foundation might work for you! My understanding is that it's a little tricky sometimes to find BB creams for darker complexions (I am on the medium/dark end of most Asian brands and l o l have you seen me), but they do exist! BB cream is basically tinted moisturizer on steroids, and I love it. I also like Bare Minerals foundation, and the cool thing is that if you go into one of their stores, you can get an associate to match the shade for you and basically show you how to use the damn thing, though they will try to sell you a bunch of random other shit at the same time. Their mineral foundation is really lightweight, and you only need a little bit of powder for your whole face, so it doesn't feel caked-on.
Okay I've run out of things to say. Ha ha ha I need to get a real job so that I don't have time to post essays about makeup on IJ.
