[Who]:James Potter & Lily Evans
[Where]: Head Common Room
[When]: September 1st, before dinner.
[What]: James and Lily meet downstairs before dinner to discuss prefect duty schedules, and other things.

James gave himself a quick once over in the mirror of his room the the Head dormitory. Giving his tie a loosening tug, he grabbed his robe and hurried down to the common room.

He still was having trouble believing he was assigned the title 'Head Boy'. Even his parents were surprised by this turn of events. (James recalled his father had to double take between the letter and his son) Despite how much of a prankster or a trouble maker he was, James held a high respect for Dumbledore, and would do anything for the wizard. Still, James was beginning to question the older man's judgment.

There was no way James was cut out to be Head Boy.

Lily managed to pull herself away from her comfortable, sinky bed with extreme effort. It was like lying on a cloud. She hoped it wouldn't get her in trouble over the course of the term; Lily hated missing class unless it was absolutely necessary.

Gathering the book that Dumbledore had given her about being Head Girl, along with the copies of the prefect's schedules that she'd had everyone draw up on the train, Lily made to go downstairs. As she was walking towards the door, she passed her mirror, and paused.

Might as well make sure I'm presentable, she thought. For...propriety's sake. Oh bugger. I completely fancy him. She ran her fingers once through her loose hair before deciding that it was completely pointless to waste time preening herself for James Potter.

Boys never notice the effort that girls put into their appearances anyway, she mused as she headed down to the common room.

As he waited for her, James began to pace. He only paced when he was nervous. But what on earth was he nervous? It was only Lily! Lily was his friend. Lily was Head Girl. Lily had gone out for a fag with him.

Lily had fought death eaters with him.

Maybe he was thinking too much on it, but since the attack, he and Lily hadn't really talked much about it. He was sure she was alright, (at least, he hadn't heard tell of there being anything wrong)

He was facing away from the stairs, running a hand through his hair.

Lily entered the common room and saw that James was already there, waiting for her. He was pacing up and down, looking preoccupied, which she found a bit odd. She was unused to seeing James anything but cocky and confident, without a care in the world, even though she had seen other sides of him as of late.

She cleared her throat, announcing her presence. "Guess we better get started if we're going to finish everything before dinner's over," she said, dropping her things onto the table and plopping down on the couch.

James nearly jumped out if his skin, but kept himself calm and collected. Just Lily. She looked beautiful, as always, she had a sort of a glow about her. And he couldn't help it, he was starting to stare. He memorized every curve with his eyes and drew his bottom lip into his mouth, biting it.

"I agree. Shall we?" He took a careful seat next to Lily, just close enough.

He sat down beside her, and Lily couldn't help being hyperaware of his proximity. When had she started getting this flustered around him? Lily could remember, very clearly, a time when his presence completely repulsed and disgusted her. She marveled at how her feelings could change--seemingly overnight.

She opened up her book and laid out all the schedules. "All right. Let's figure out how we can match everyone up." Lily loved planning. She was good at it. She was a naturally organized person, and this was her element.

James leaned over to see properly, unaware of how close he was getting. From this distance, she could smell her perfume. The last time he had a whiff of that scent, he kissed her cheek. He glanced at her, and noticed how comfortable she looked.

He took a risk, and pressed a bit closer.

As Lily shuffled her papers, she noticed that James kept leaning in, nearer and nearer. A bit unnerved, she cleared her throat again and held up the schedules.

"How about starting with this month?" she suggested, as though that weren't the obvious choice.

James' attention was focused on her hands while she organized the papers. He moved back a little bit, noticing he was a bit too close. "Sorry," he offered lamely, reading over the schedules. "Ah, Anthony is on the Quidditch team," James pointed to one of the papers. "Since I am planning practice early in the morning, lets put him mid afternoon."

James grabbed a quill and parchment that was sitting on the table in front of them and made the note.

Lily watched him work, curiously. He was being serious again, like he had been at his house in August. She thought back to their meeting on Diagon Alley, and the attack. Two weeks had passed and she had heard no news of it anywhere.

"James," she said suddenly, "your parents work at the Ministry, right? Have they heard anything about Death Eater activity in London? I didn't think they'd ever shown up in Diagon Alley before..."

If the Death Eaters were on the move--and they had been out in the country for much of the summer--then it was probably only a matter of time before they started looking towards Hogwarts.

"Hmm?" James looked over at Lily, and shook his head. "No, my folks haven't said anything. Honestly, they might be keeping it from me if they know something, but I will find out soon enough." He paused, seeming to consider some of his own thoughts. "But, I don't think we have to worry while we are here, so much. With Dumbledore here, there is no cause for concern. He'll protect everyone." His voice, James didn't really notice, was more confidant, more like a leader's voice. But he thought nothing of it.

His mind was wandering again, and his eyes were drawn to the perfect pair of legs attached to Lily. She wasn't super tall, but her legs were perfect! His eyes went from her ankle to her calf, her knee and all up her thigh, hoping she's shift just a bit so he could see a bit more leg.

Before he was caught, (though he was sure she noticed) he averted his gaze back to the papers. "By the way... After the attack... I never really asked you how you were doing." He looked her in the eyes, truly concerned for her. "I mean, I was feeling so groggy... I..." James licked his lips, which were suddenly dry, and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. He really wanted to just...kiss her right then.

"It's not really my own safety I'm worried about." Lily knew that there was almost no place safer in the Wizarding world than Hogwarts, with Dumbledore. "It's my family. When I'm away from them--particularly now, with the war--I get worried. They don't understand what's going on. I just hope they don't become...targets." She bit her lip, twisting her fingers in her lap.

The moment James brought up the attack and what had followed, Lily remembered the feeling of his lips on her cheek. She blushed a bit, running a hand through her hair. "I'm fine," she said. "No harm done. We were quite lucky, weren't we? You're a very quick thinker. If you hadn't thought of flying, I dunno what might have happened."

Something stirred in James when Lily expressed her concern for her family. He wanted to tell her they would be alright, that somehow, they won't be considered a target. But he wasn't sure, himself.

"They don't know your real name. So, I don't think you have so much to worry about now. Just..." He offered a small smile, "Just keep in contact with them. It's all you can do."

James couldn't help notice the light blush staining Lily's cheeks. "I'm glad..." He all but whispered, leaning in a bit. "You were brilliant yourself... I didn't do all that alone..."

She nodded. "The ones that found us don't know my real name, but that doesn't mean they can't track me down. You're right, though. All I can do is write to them..." At that moment, Lily thought of Petunia. Petunia, newly married, off house hunting with her new whale of a husband. Petunia, who had not said a word of goodbye to her at the end of the summer. Petunia, who had not wanted her own sister to be at her wedding. Lily shook her head to clear it of those thoughts.

Her cheeks grew warmer as James leaned in. "Oh, tosh. I was completely useless. Could only remember a few simple spells..."

James couldn't tell what she was thinking, but he knew she was still worried. "Lily... What can I do? I'm your mate, right? There must be something I can do to..." He licked his lips again, gripping the fabric of the couch cushion. "Anything?"

He looked so anxious and eager, and Lily smiled thankfully, patting his hand. "You don't have to do anything, James. Like you said, the best I can do is keep in touch with them, right? They'll be okay." She said the words as if she were trying to convince herself.

"Anyway, have you decided when you're holding Quidditch tryouts? We'd better work out our own schedules as well."

For a long moment, James just looked into her eyes. Oh, she was so beautiful. He held her gaze a bit longer then reluctantly moved back.

"Ah, let's see... This Saturday sounds good. The seventh." James wrote this note down, as he remembered Sirius would be there to reclaim his position as beater. "Will you come to the tryouts, Lily?"

Lily looked at him in surprise. She'd never expressed an interest in Quidditch before, save for in second year when she had made a fool of herself by trying out for the team and failing miserably. "Er...I suppose I could," she said. "I won't be doing much on Saturday, just...homework and things..."

She sounded like an idiot. And all he'd done was ask her to watch Quidditch tryouts. This was not good.

The smile that spread across James' face was practically stupid. She said, in so many words, yes! James was so excited, he leaned in and pecked her cheek. "Great!" He froze when he realized what he had done, and then bit his lip. "Ah. Well. It's almost dinner time. We can finish this later, okay?"

James abruptly stood and hurried out of the common room, throwing his robe on as he strode down the halls.

I'm a bloody idiot...

Lily froze, feeling the burning imprint of his lips on her cheek even after he had moved away. She watched him scamper out of the common room and knew he was probably running because he thought she'd hit him.

But far from hitting him, if he'd sat still just a little longer, she probably would have gone in for a full-frontal snog.

And that, Lily decided, was not a good thing. She was not allowed to fall for James Potter, of all people.

Slowly, she got up and headed downstairs.
