Mark of the Pisan by Robin Serrano

    Original poster: jedi_runya

    Title: Mark of the Pisan

    Author: Robin Serrano

    Rating: NC-17

    Pairing: Q/O, O/other

    Warnings: author's warning... )

Summary: At his eighteenth birthday celebration, Obi-Wan is kidnapped by somone from Qui-Gon's past, and he is coerced
into selling himself into slavery. His situation forces him to re-examine all he has believed about his future with Qui-Gon.

Reasons for recommending: This fic is one of my all time favorites when I need an angsty, plot-driven story. This beautful
story has the angst and romance neatly balanced thoughout the entire tale. This story is so well written that it will be hard for the
reader to put it down until it is finished.

Batter My Heart by Jedi Rita

    Original poster: emila_wan

    Title: Batter My Heart
    Author: Jedi Rita
    Rating: R
    Pairing: Obi-Wan/Bail
Warnings: Strong angst (as if THAT needs a warning! *G*)
    Author's e-mail: jedirita@yahoo.com
    Link to story: http://www.wyomingnot.com/rita/batter/00.html
The whole series is here - http://www.wyomingnot.com/rita/ - and it starts with "Perhaps," but Batter My Heart can be read alone.

Summary: Ten years after beginning his exile on Tatooine, Obi-Wan visits Bail and Leia on
Alderaan and deals with his inner demons.

Reasons for recommending: This one is long, but definitely worth the time. And oh, the
heartbreak! Obi-Wan Kenobi is a tragic figure, and never moreso than in this series. Although this is the
final story, it was the first of the series I read (I think it was the first she wrote) and it remains my
favorite. The writing is superb, detailed and sensual. But the most compelling thing about the story is the
utter *reality* of it. Ten years after Anakin's turn, Obi-Wan is nearly destroyed by everything that's
happened to him, and his reunion with a lover he's not seen in years reflects that. The sex is understated,
but real, as are the emotions. Here are two people who love each other, who desperately want to connect, but it's not all sweetness and light. Sometimes happy endings are not possible, no matter how much one might wish it. Watching two noble characters struggle to accept that they can never have a normal life together is heart-wrenching. This is not a canned, happily-ever-after tale. Yet in the end, I think the
reader will be satisfied. I know I was!

Another aspect of the story that I found charming was the portrayal of young Leia. She is precocious, but
not annoying, and she is definitely necessary to the story. Her hero-worship of Obi-Wan only exacerbates
the Jedi's own torn self-image. And when she accuses him of not loving Bail, Obi-Wan's loss of control
leads to a catharsis of sorts. It is Leia's forgiveness of a small thing that allows Obi-Wan to begin to forgive himself for bringing about the destruction of the Republic.

All in all, an extremely well done story. Set aside a chunk of time and a box of tissues for this one.

A Little Night Fiction by Briony

    Warnings: dangerous curves
    Author's e-mail, web site and/or LJ id: Hippediva@aol.com; [info]hippediva
Link to story: A Little Night Fiction
Reasons for recommending: Raymond Chandler eat your heart out. Bogie, Qui-Gon's a lot hotter than you ever were.
These are the two reasons this story's a must-read in AUs as far as I'm concerned. It takes an idea I always wanted to see done - Film Noir Raymond Chandler style storytelling plus clichees and style - and applies it to Q/O. DetectiveBogie!Qui and FemmeFatale!Obi are a gorgeous, hilarious and wonderfully cheesy combination that works exceptionally well, especially since Briony has the film noir style down to a t. A wonderful read, entertaining as hell, expertly written, a concept done incredibly well from start to finish

My Name Is Master Qui-Gon and I Treat My Padawan Like a Rock by Jedi Nic

I was trying to find something different and overlooked to recommend and I came across this story which I remembered as being humourous and cute. It's a quick read and I enjoy frustrated Qui-Gon and interferring Yoda stories. Lets just call it Qui-Gon goes to MA - Masters Anonymous!

The information above may be outdated as the story was posted to the archive back in 1999.

Qui-Gon looked down at the data-pad in front of him and scowled. All around the room, expectant eyes were on him as they awaited his next words. Yoda in particular was tapping the floor anxiously with his stick, and Qui-Gon was positive there would be a sadistic smile on the green gnome's face. He didn't know how Yoda had quite dragged him into this - he suspected a mind-whammy of sorts but one could never be too sure.

"Read it, you will!" Yoda all but barked. Heaving a huge sigh, to show how much he was suffering and perhaps elicit some sympathy from the other Jedi Masters who'd obviously also been conned into this, Qui-Gon again scanned the words. He then looked up at the group. He opened his mouth and began to speak.

"My name is Master Qui-Gon Jinn and I treat my Padawan like a rock."

    Reasons for recommending: Obi-ki has some of the best romantic stories out there. This is the first one by her that I read;
it totally drew me in and hooked me life on her stories. It has all the best elements to a story: a plot(!), great moments worth
remembering and charaters that remain true to what I see them as in the movies... oh, and lets not forget the steamy sex!

Twilight to Knight, by Laura McEwan

    Warnings: none

Link to story: Twilight to Knight
Reasons for recommending: If I recall correctly, there's been a bit of a discussion about the element that makes this story and its sequels special - namely that you can't tell who's talking, Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan, what is said in the fic could be true for either of them.
I've always liked this story, and I'm going to tell you why: One, because I like Laura's writing style, the scene she sets, and I particularely like the ending. Two, because it's a classic theme done with an interesting stylistic way. And three, because the style element Laura uses here totally works for me, in my opinion it expresses that with all the differences between human beings, some things, like loving and wanting to be loved in return, are just universal.

Link to story: http://members.tripod.com/~slashgirls/toto/factionintro.html or http://www.masterapprentice.org/archive/s/sf.html

Summary: By the time Master Qui-Gon is sent to investigate Knight Kenobi's suspicious activities on the mining moon of Ramos V, he and his former Padawan have been estranged for 4 years. When they finally meet again, Qui-Gon discovers Obi-Wan has a new life, a new home, and a new love...

Reasons for recommending: I can't believe nobody has recommended this one yet. It is one of THE most memorable and well written Q/O stories I've come across. I like everything on the TOTO (The Obi-Wan Torture Oasis) site, because I love to see Obi-Wan suffer, but this one is my favorite. I always admire writers who can create a whole world and make it believable, especially when the plot revolves around mystery and political intrigue. At the heart of Obi-Wan's existence there is a terrible lie, and he has wrapped himself with more lies, like layers on an onion, which begin to peel away once Qui-Gon re-enters his life. The story just drips with angst, yet the characters behave as dutiful, self-sacrificing Jedi throughout. And of course ... will I spoil things if I tell you that I like happy endings?

    Bonding Universe by Anne Higgins

    Original poster: raina_at

    Title: Bonding Universe
    Author: Anne Higgins
Rating: Anne Higgins calls it 'sex', I'd give it R
    Pairing: Q/O
Warnings: there's no chan, but it gnaws on the edges.
    Author's e-mail, web site and/or LJ id: annehiggins@mindspring.com;
Her homepage, as far as I know, she doesn't have a lj.
Link to story: Bonding through the Years, Bonding Universe Part 1
Bedrest is Boring, Bonding Universe Part 2
Care and Feeding of a Bondmate, Bonding Universe Part 3
Reasons for recommending: This is a true classic of the TPM fandom, one that is either loved or viewed a bit suspiciously in my experience. First of all, well, it's cute. Secondly, through much of this story, Obi-Wan is a child, but the relationship he and Qui-Gon have is nevertheless romantic in nature, even if sex is only a part of it once Obi-Wan is grown up.
Why do I like it, then? Well, for one, I like the cuteness. I like Anne Higgins' writing style. I like the idea of a romance removed from the physical, that is purely spiritual in nature, and yet absolute, like only a child can love. And thirdly, it deals with a theme very close to my heart (*cough*): Fate versus Choice.
In this story, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are destined to be together, they've got a fully formed soul bond from the very moment Obi-Wan is born, and there is nothing either of them can do about it. What fascinates me about the story is the contrast between Obi-Wan's easy acceptance of the bond (it's all he ever knew) and Qui-Gon's struggle to accept and embrace it. Anne Higgins could have done more to flesh this conflict out, but it's rudimentarily there, addressed in the question of whether if he'd had a choice, Qui-Gon would have chosen the bond. I would really like to see something written in this universe once (Anne Higgins has given it free to play with, as far as I know) that deals a bit more closely with that aspect.

Still as Bright by Wolfe (and) No Other Sun by Binky

Summary: Qui-Gon is given a gift (yes it's another Obi slave story).

Reasons for recommending: This was the first au story I read upon entering the fandom in 2001 and it hooked me for good on Q/O slash.
It is very well written and entirely captivating. I found the characterism of Qui and Obi to be rich and unforgettable.

Reasons for recommending: This story is another au with a twist. Binky has the gift of pulling the reader in and making the
story come alive. It is funny and sad at the same time with one of the greatest fix-it endings I’ve read.

Reasons for recommending: This story was one of the first stories I thought of when volunteering to rec for tpm_flashback. It combines a lot of elements that I love: Q/O first-time, sensual writing, Jedi who express themselves through art, a wordless declaration of love. I read it several years ago, yet it still resonates with me. From the first line, I was completely drawn in: "The night I became Obi-Wan's lover was also the first night I discovered that he was a musician, and the second revelation was almost as much of a surprise and a delight as the first." And then, the ending is such a bittersweet twist to it that it stays with you forever.

Do You Want That Kiss, by Lori and Wolfling

    Original poster: raina_at

Hi guys, I'm back. Again, my recs don't have a special theme, they're all just stories I love and enjoy reading over and over again. Starting this week with one of my favourite ChanPadawan!Qui stories.

Title: Do You Want That Kiss

    Rating: NC-17
    Pairing: Qui/Obi

    Reasons for recommending:
This is Q/O dynamics with a very special twist. In this AU, Qui-Gon's a 16-year old overeager Padawan, in love for the first time of his life with Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, in his mid-twenties. Their romance is by turns, sweet, serious, sexy and captures perfectly the rush of first love. A wonderful read, especially through the turned-around age-experience-status dynamics, even if the characterisation, especially of Obi-Wan, is far off the norm. But if you enjoy a good chan-AU, and if you enjoy Padawan!Qui (which I ADORE), then this is a must-read!

We have four volunteers for the next round; I'm hoping we'll be able to start up tomorrow. I'll post the schedule as soon as they've all confirmed that they're still good to go.

It might be time to start thinking about the future of this community. Due to its nature, I'm not expecting that it will be able to run forever in its current form, and it might be time to consider whether it should continue, and, if so, how. I'll post later this week with some ideas, but meanwhile, if you feel like talking about it, feel free to comment.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd add a rec, since I've never done one before here [g]:

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan meet at Amidala's wedding, six years after Naboo, where Qui-Gon managed not to die. Qui-Gon makes some assumptions that he really shouldn't. Things happen. It's not a long story, but it's well-constructed, and it always makes me smile.

Reason for recommending: Not a word out of place. This is culture building in 16K. And deep insights into Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's fundamental personalities in the same 16K. Read it slowly, and savor it like Qui savors the zhai he's drinking. Oh, and much of the story is hot sex. Yes, all in 16K. Each word counts for so much; this is a drabble on steroids.

Plus there's not enough Qui-as-a-not-so-closet-hedonist fic out there.
