My 8th and final rec. This has been great fun and I hope to do it again sometime, preferably when work is not killing me.
Title: Darkest Before the Dawn

Reasons for recommending: It took me a long time to find my final rec because I was in the mood for something angsty and unhappy and it seemed like everything I clicked on was happy AU PWPs. Then I stumbled across this, and I knew immediately I'd found my rec. This is just absolutely gutting, and yet it's beautiful. 9 times out of 10 I want the happy ending, or at least something optimistic, some hope. But there's just something really moving about a fic like this.
Quote from story:
*
It hurts, now, to realise that my first instincts were correct. The boy should never have been trained. Despite my Master's wishes, he should have been left on that forsaken planet to eke out whatever existence he could make for himself. It would have been a kindness. The last few years have been a joy but this night, I fear, may break me.
I long to give him everything he deserves, everything he desires. I cannot. All I can give is what is in my power to give; my love, my body, myself, and one more night of life.

Once more, I love this fic! I love the way passages such as the quote above are so ambiguous that your first thought is Obi/Anakin. Dee totally plays with the audience's pre-conceptions, with our knowledge that Anakin will turn. We're expecting Obi/Anakin. But then the little hints start popping up in descriptions of the padawan. We start to suspect. We want to yell out, warn Qui, "Don't do this!" Then there's Qui's vision of Obi walking away from the destruction and we see how he jumped to conclusions, assumed that Obi was the cause of the destruction. How he assumed that the darkness he saw in Obi's future was Obi himself and not Anakin. And then it happens and Qui is so sure he did the right thing, that he has sacrificed the man he loved to save the world from this darkness and it was all for nothing! A hideous mistake. And the audience is left completely gutted. This is a masterpiece.
