Jack Church: A drink and a pretty girl.
Subject: A Friendly drink.
Who: Jack Church
Where: Fox and Hound, a seedy pub on Lower Pitt street.
Open To: Vivian Thorpe, Harry Fisher Nee Roper, NPCs – Will and Georgie.
Backstory set sixteen years ago. Jack is fourteen, Harry is sixteen and Viv is fifteen.
Smoke curled in the air, issued for pipes and there was the undeniable stench of alcohol and filth. It was hardly a homely environment but Jack liked it. The inn had become a meeting place for the gang because it served cheap beer and gin and looked the other way about customer’s dealings.
In one corner sat two men, dealing cards back and forth at each other, heads down and silent. In the other a gaggle of painted tarts pouted and fluttered their eye-lashes at the drinkers. Harry had gone to fetch them all drinks and Jack relaxed at the table, eyeing the haul they’d made that night. Two nice gold pocket watches and some lovely jewellery taken from upstairs and a solid silver tea set from down. Too bad they’d been disturbed but they’d been out the back of the house before the butler knew what was happening. Shame he’d had to come home early, they’d been casing that house for weeks waiting for a night when both the servants and masters had been out.
Still the boss would be happy. It was money in the pocket and no-one had been caught. Harry’s attention at the bar seemed to have been distracted by some simpering little thing with golden curls. Jack had seen him before with Harry, although he knew he worked down the other side of the river with Slater’s gang and knew Harry wouldn’t be coming back for a while yet. Harry told him he got the boy to tell him secrets about Slater’s business dealings and Jack believed that. They’d been hitting a lot more houses recently, with better scores, and Harry said he’d got the information from the little whore.
Turning away from them Jack looked back towards the women. They were more his cup of tea. He didn’t understand the attraction to boy’s that some men seemed to have. The women in the corner were all lovely figures but he knew the one he’d rather have – Harry’s girl, Viv. She was a right fire-cracker with her bright red hair, wet mouth and her cheeks all rouged up. She was a skinny thing but she had nice breasts all the same, and he imagined under all that make-up and her dress she had soft, milky skin. He knew Harry didn’t like him near Vivian, didn’t really like any of the gang with her but there’d be no harm in just asking her over for a drink.
He waved to her, glancing again at the bar to see if that movement had caught Harry’s attention but he was leaving, heading up to one of the rooms with that cherubic sodomite hanging off his arm. No doubt they’d have another couple of houses to hit up at the end of the night.
“Oi. Vivian.” He called, kicking out the chair across from him. “Come and join me?”
