It had been a pleasantly warm day. Not the hottest so far this year- the city was unbearable on the hottest of days- but the breeze had driven off the excess heat and now that the day was drawing slowly to it's close the temperature again dropped by a few degrees, and the breeze now was positively cool. A shawl, like the one carefully wrapped in tissue paper which he carried with him, was sure to keep the wind from disturbing the thoughts and graces of a young lady out walking. At least, he hoped so. If not, then he would have to re-thinking their evening, and perhaps find tickets for one of the shows on The Strand. After all, that was where his family supposed he was, having dinner with an old friend and then an evening at a playhouse or an opera. If they had known the truth, Hector supposed, he would still be at home, or at his father's offices, having yet another argument on the matter.
This part of London was one not often frequented by men of his class, at least, not so openly before night fell. It hadn't been so long ago that he had come here under the cover of darkness. But he was older and wise now. He turned a corner, tugging at his jacket to neaten it, hoping he looked presentable and handsome enough, as he neared Vivian's door. Pausing there a second longer, examining the wrapped parcel to ensure it was perfect, before knocking.
