Paris, some years ago: a masquerade ball
Subject: An altercation at a masquerade in Paris a few years ago.
Where: Home of Princess Marie-Charolette Beaulieu
Who: Theodozja Zamoyski, Polish Countess
Warnings: None, yet.
Open to: Sergius Petrov
Swirling pools of colorful costumes shifted and spun rapidly across the ballroom. Costumes crafted of rich taffeta, silk and lace were draped marvelously on the bodies of young, beautiful French aristocrats. Lavish masks, both haunting and sensual, hid the faces of those in attendance, allowing anonymity to filter through and release the guest's inner desires. Societal responsibilities vanished in place of complete hedonistic indulgence. The riotous laughter and cries from the party-goers grew to such a peak so as to almost drown out the music as well as any internal dialogs one might have. And above it all, the overwhelming and assaulting scent of rich perfume mingled with sweat and alcohol. This, indeed, represented another decadent and immensely successful part for the Princess Beaulieu.
Donned in a gown of rich green silk and wearing a half domino of white lace with feathers, Theodozja made her way through the initial wave of party guests. Occasionally she thought she recognized a feature of a familiar person, but could not be entirely sure. Was that not the goal of a masquerade? Carte-blanche to act upon whatever one wished? She hoped this held true for her own agenda. As she momentarily paused to observe the action she realized, however, her plan may not be fully realized simply on account of how wild the party had become and how difficult it would be to find her target. She should have even gone through with this plot at all? It seemed all too perfect a plan just hours before...
It was upon receiving a small missive that morning when Theodozja had the epiphany. Discovering word from one of her sources that her family's enemy Sergius Petrov was living in Paris and masquerading as a noble, no less, filled her with such intense emotions that they could not be ignored. The moment she received the letter her immediate response was to head directly to her brother and father. Halfway to their chambers, however, Theodozja was struck both with a notion as well as a sense of guilt. How could use possibly deliver such horrible news to her family when both men were so preoccupied with their affairs, not to mention her father's health having declined over the journey? This thought plagued her dramatically. Perhaps telling only her brother Michal? He would never keep this from their father, regardless of his condition. No, she would have to handle matters herself. Besides, an idea had instantly formed itself in her mind and she could not ignore the attractive, adventurous charm to it all.
She would not decline the masquerade invitation she had received that morning, as originally planned. She would quickly see to it that her maidservant tend to her garments and find a suitable mask. In the meantime she would go to her source in Paris and found out as much information from him concerning Petrov as she could. She would gain whatever leverage she could and seek him out at the party. She would make it clear to him the will of her family. He would never go unpunished for his actions and his days of freedom would be numbered.
Those thoughts rang clear in her mind as she once again commenced her search across the ballroom. It would only be a matter of time, no doubt, before the heartless Russian brute presented himself. For the moment, her desires to avenge the memory of Jan would have to be kept at bay...
