Finally letting out the breath that had been holding, she nodded at the new piece of instruction, suturing the openings in the stomach, then the skin, with the same stillness that she had had a moment ago. To be honest, it didn't feel like she was the one doing it. Maki felt like she was watching someone else lift the glass shards out of the stomach; suture the openings in the tissue. She felt like she was watching, perhaps, her mother, even though she had never actually watched her mother operate before.
Then it was done, and the present staff were wheeling the little boy out of the operation room for a CT scan. She would have followed, if not for the strong voice that pulled her out of her relieved thoughts. "Eh?" She blinked in surprise, rendered speechless for a moment. Not because she thought he was asking her to be part of the ER team, but because she actually had been considering ER. "Actually, yes. I'm aiming for ER."
