CHARACTERS: Scorpius Malfoy & Melissa Rosier
SETTING: Malfoy Manor
DATE: March 9th
SUMMARY: It's a family dinner and the younger generation are not adult enough to be included in adult chatter, nor do they want to be.
Scorpius had lost his appetite after hearing his mother chatter about planning a family outing to celebrate the finished reconstruction of the Prophet building. He knew what kind of outings she planned. The ones where they played happy-family just long enough for the public to get a good impression of them, a few nice photos taken by her planted photographer, then she would be back to ignoring him. It had been years since he had actually spoken to her. At best they exchanged a few pleasantries while in company, all in the name of keeping up appearances while company was around. The worst part was he was pretty sure his mother hadn't even noticed how estranged they had become.
With his aunt's family over for a Saturday night dinner at the Malfoy manor, Scorpius had been shunned towards the 'kids' end of the table again, despite being twenty two. The problem with the age gap between himself and the two sets of parents present was that he was still excluded from their talk. He was wishing he could have followed Narcissa's route and opted out of the informal dinner between two families. At least he wasn't alone in his small dilemma. One of his two cousins was too old for Hogwarts and sat beside him through the meal.
Melissa Rosier wasn't bad company, as far as he was concerned. Scorpius used to find her and her little brother Hector incredibly annoying when they were younger. Now that they had both finished Hogwarts, they could at least be pleasant to each other. Though it was dangerous to get too friendly. Scorpius feared that their maternal grandmother would get even pushier about the two of them marrying. Despite Melissa being more suitable personality-wise than the other girls he had tried dating, he had a very firm stance against it. First cousins was too close. They had to be third cousins at least.
Once all the food was gone and Scorpius felt it was an appropriate time to leave the table without being rude, he stood from his chair and leaned over to Melissa. "Lissy, accompany me to the music room?" he asked, leaned towards her, hand on her shoulder and speaking quiet enough as to not interrupt their parents' chatter. It was obvious that the two Greengrass sisters and their husbands wanted the space to talk without their adult children around anyway. No doubt Melissa could sense it too, so he held the door open for her on his way out, expecting her to follow.
