WHO: Jadzia & Mary
WHEN: 226403.25, evening
WHERE: Deck 9, section 3
SUMMARY: First official Holodeck test/A visit to Downton Abbey
WARNINGS: Unknown!

Jadzia had recreated Quark's Bar at Deep Space Nine as one of her first tests, and when that proved successful, she'd moved on to recreating some other locations. New York, London, ShiKahr on Vulcan and and First City on the Klingon homeworld. Tokyo 2015 was to be tested next, but first she wanted to show Mary what she hoped was an accurate recreation of Downton Abbey. The only thing Jadzia hadn't recreated was the people. While she could populate any of the other places with generic personalities, she knew she couldn't make people Mary knew. At least not without her input.

Between Mary's description and some data Jadzia had found in the computer banks on 1920s England and a building very similar, she might have succeeded. But there was only one way to tell.

She waited for Mary in front of the doors, just outside what would hopefully become the new holodeck.

Mary grinned at Jadzia as she approached, feeling both excited and nervous. Would this actually work? And if it did, how would she feel about it? Would she be happy or would she burst into tears. Mary wasn't quite sure, and the uncertainty of it made her anxious.

"Alright," Mary said, "what must we do?"

Jadzia smiled at her, supressing an urge to give her a hug. She pressed a button on the panel next to the door. "Computer, initiate program Downton 3 A."

Turning, she gave Mary a wink. "The first few versions were really bad."

Once the computer signaled the program was ready, the doors sweeped open. Inside, it looked like the England Countryside stretching into the distance, with clear blue skies and the sound of birds flying past. Downton Abbey was in clear view. It looked as though the door opened up near the front gates.

Mary was floored from the moment the doors opened. If someone had told her that she was really standing on the lawn of her house, she would have believed them. "Oh my God," she breathed and rushed into the room.

There was grass under her feet and a breeze in the air. It pushed her hair back as she ran towards the house, afraid that it might disappear on her. Mary stopped to take in the sight of it, all of the feelings of longing coming back to her. All at once, she burst into tears.

Luckily, the door closed behind them. The breeze and smell was easy enough to replicate, thanks to specialized vents. "Everything is solid, you can touch it. It uses technology similar to the replicators for that part."

She demonstrated by kneeling and pulling up some grass, to let it float away in the breeze, then put her hand on Mary's shoulder and squeezed, leaving an opening if Mary needed a hug. "Do you want to see inside? The decor is probably not going to be perfect, but we can work on that as you remember things."

Mary did hug her, tears still falling down her face. "It's perfect," she said. "I don't know how to thank you." Jadzia had done something so nice for her and Mary didn't know how she would repay her.

She nodded at Jadzia's question, trying to wipe her eyes as they moved across the lawn towards the front door.

Grinning, Jadzia hugged Mary back warmly. "I think your reaction is thanks enough. I know how powerful the call of the familiar can be."

That had really been her first motivation. Giving everyone more entertainment options was also important, but reactions like this? Even more so.

Though if she was honest with herself, she'd considered recreating Worf just to say good bye to him.

Mary linked her arm with Jadzia's as they entered the house. The other woman hadn't had many pictures to work with, so of course the interior wasn't exact, but there was the staircase that led upstairs to the bedrooms. It even had the Gainsborough that hung on the landing. One of her wedding pictures had been taken there.

"This is incredible," she breathed.

It was exactly what Jadzia had hoped to hear. She took in the look on Mary's face and beamed. "You can pick something up. Touch it. I'm sorry it's a little quiet, but I didn't think you'd want to have generic people here."

This was amazing. If she wasn't too careful, she would spend all of her time in here, which could not possibly be healthy. Obviously Mary missed her home, and seeing this was an incredible thing, but she knew that she needed to live on the ship and not in a simulation.

She picked up a real and heavy statuette that sat on one of the tables in the reception room. It was all as she remembered it except for the eerie quiet. "No. And I think recreating people might be... odd."

"It's usually frowned upon without their permission. Though historical figures tend to be okay. If you ever wanted to ask Isaac Newton a question, or watch Michelangelo paint, you could. I've known some officers who enjoyed playing the role of Sherlock Holmes, too." It wasn't limited to real people.

Jadzia understood Mary's concern, though. It was a lot different than a photograph.

"That would be strange, having historical figures in my family home," she said with a laugh. Mary turned a circle to look up at the balcony that surrounded the reception room and sighed. "It's so much, Jadzia. I... I'm afraid that I won't want to leave."

"I understand that fear." Jadzia came over, putting her hands on Mary's shoulder. "But it's not real. It's a place to visit and remember, but not a place to live. It's missing the important parts. The people."

Mary nodded. She was right. Living here would be like living in a shell of her former home. It wouldn't work without her family and servants. Even though it was so lifelike, it still wasn't real.

"Did this take you a long time to put together?"

"The longest part was the research," Jadzia explained. "Gathering information, researching the time period, finding similar buildings to use as a template. Most of the tech to do this already existed, but I had to recreate it in smaller form to fit in this room."

"It's truly the most incredible thing that I have ever seen. I suppose other people can come in, right?"

That would be exciting, to get to show other people on board the ship her home. Perhaps they could have tea here one day... even if there was nobody there to serve them.

"Yes! Anyone can access this program if you choose to allow it. You can lock it with a password if you only want people to access it when you say so." Some people liked their privacy and as long as their private needs didn't cause harm to others Jadzia liked to respect that.

Though never ever tell Jadzia something that could easily be gossiped about.

"I don't think I'd mind if other people wanted to visit," Mary said. "I'd like to have a party here. Perhaps tea at least."

It could be lovely, especially if she could replicate some classic high tea food selections. Maybe the captain would come.

"I like that idea. Tea and a party." Jadzia looked around. "Sometimes you need a little refinement in life. I think the Captain would be impressed."

It also gave her an idea, but it would be one of those just for herself kind of thing. She mostly just wanted to program in a bunch of Klingons having prim and proper British Tea.

Mary's cheeks turned slightly pink and she laughed. "Well, that wouldn't be the reason for it..." Just a very nice bonus. She was still in the process of trying to get to know the Captain and whether or not it was worth it to pursue him.

"Keep me posted,"Jadzia replied. "And good luck."

She swung her arms along her side. "Are you ready to leave? Ending the program is easy. Just tell the computer to end program."
