WHO: Carol Marcus and Jim Kirk
WHEN: 226410.12 evening
WHERE: Weaponry
SUMMARY: Carol falls asleep on the job
WARNINGS: TBD?

All of Carol's extra jobs on board the Enterprise had finally caught up with her. Maybe it was the fact that she'd only averaged about four hours of sleep for the last three nights, but sitting at her desk in weaponry and reviewing her reports had managed to put her right to sleep. She laid with her head on the desk, completely out on top of the PADD.

She was probably stretching herself too thin. Besides her regular job, she had volunteered to help with the Inquiry Team as well as to teach weapons classes to the travelers. Beyond that, she was still looking into the project that she had been pulled off of, Project Genesis, hoping that her concerns about it would not come to fruition. One of the other scientists on board was covertly sending her reports and files to check, so she had been reading those as well. Those occupied a growing file on her PADD where she could refer back to them... if she ever had time.

Between all of that and seeing Leonard, Carol was wiped out and it had finally come to a head as she laid passed out on her desk. She didn't even hear Jim when he approached her.

Jim was never really that good at situations like this, when he found a crewmember sleeping on the job. It was a little more difficult when it was someone like Carol, whom he considered a friend. Since he didn't know what kind of sleeper she was, he didn't know what the best way to wake her up was. So he hovered around her for a long moment before clearing his throat. Then a second time. When that didn't wake her up, Jim reached out to touch he shoulder gently.

"Carol?" he asked. "Dr. Marcus?"

Carol didn't wake up until Jim put his hand on her, and then she jumped with a start, jolting quickly awake. "What?" she asked groggily. "Where?..." Then realization all hit her at once and she groaned, putting her head back into her hands. "I fell asleep out here? I'm so sorry, Jim." How utterly embarrassing to fall asleep at her desk and be woken up by the captain.

"Are you all right?" He stepped back to let her wake up, not wanting to invade her personal space in any way. He crossed his arms and waited. "Why are you sleeping here instead of, oh I don't know, in your quarters?"

"Well, I hadn't meant to," she replied. Surely that was obvious enough. "I simply fell asleep." Carol yawned and tried to stretch. "I was checking some of the reports for Project Genesis..." She rubbed at her temples, trying to get her brain to wake up. There was too much work to be done. "I'm usually fine on about four hours of sleep anyway," she continued with a wave of her hand and a brief yawn. Everything was ok.

"I'm sure those reports are pretty boring," Jim said, "and definitely boring enough to make you fall asleep." He trailed off a little as his eyes widened. "Four hours? No, unacceptable. Even I manage more than four hours a night. You need at least six if not more, understood?"

Carol almost couldn't believe that someone as hyperactive as Jim could manage more than four hours of sleep. She sighed and sat back in her chair. "I've got too much to do though," she said, then quickly decided to rephrase that. "I mean, there's a lot of important work to be done and I need to pull my weight on it. The weaponry reports, the traveller project, Project Genesis - it's all quite important."

And Carol didn't really want to give any of it up, even if she could admit that she was spreading herself a bit thin.

"We're all doing important work," he said with a shrug of only one shoulder. He scratched his jaw. "I don't want you spreading yourself too thin, and I definitely don't want you not getting enough sleep. So which is going to budge for you, Carol?" Jim gave her a smile.

Carol groaned, rubbing at her eyes again. "And then there's Leonard too..." She cut herself off. "You'd probably rather not hear about that." He and Jim were best friends. Of all the people on board the ship to talk with about her relationship, he was probably the last one who wanted to hear about it.

He laughed. "Is there a problem with Bones?" he asked, slightly concerned. He hadn't talked to Bones in a while, especially not about whatever they were doing together, him and Carol. "Look, Dr. Marcus," he said, lowering his voice. "Just don't overwork yourself, all right? I don't want any of the crew to do that."

"No," she said with a sigh. "It's not a problem." Not really, other than the fact that he still seemed reserved and closed off to her. "He's... reluctant." And, of course, took up some of her time, though he was a distraction that she enjoyed. Carol shook her head. "Anyway, I won't overwork myself. I probably need to cut something, but I really don't want to." There were too many interesting things to do and research, and Carol wanted a hand in all of them.

"Tell you what," Jim said, rubbing his leg. "Let's do this. You do your shifts, and the research team, but I think you can take a break with the project genesis research, all right? We can put that on hold for a little while."

Carol groaned a little and rested her head on the back of her chair. "I don't want to though, Jim. I'm worried about that." She sighed again. "I can.. cut back a little on it, but I still want to read the reports." She turned her blue eyes to his. "Will you help me?"

Her fear that the technology pioneered in Project Genesis would be turned into a weapon hadn't come to fruition yet, but she was still wary. It wasn't something she had told anyone else but Jim about, and by extension Pike, as she had told Jim that the Admiral could be aware. Because of that, they needed to be the ones to keep an eye on it.

Jim sighed and shook his head. "No, I'm ordering you to take a break," he told her. "If you want to do some reading of the reports, fine, but you need to be getting at lease six hours of sleep each night, understood?"

The look she gave him was a bit skeptical. "Can a Captain order a member of the crew to sleep a certain number of hours a night?" Carol didn't like the idea of being ordered off of Project Genesis, though she would do as Jim asked. In the meantime, she would work on how to streamline her workload so that she would have more free time to devote to it.

She gave him a weary smile. "Or do you just like ordering people around?" she asked playfully.

"A captain can order a member of his crew to do anything that will help said member be a more productive member of said crew," he said with a shrug. "It was at my suggestion that you started looking into Project Genesis, so for the time being now I'm pulling you from it."
