Welcome to Traveler Research HQ

Bi-monthly, the research teams will meet altogether to discuss recent discoveries, compare notes, and perhaps cause unintended mischief. All research team members are welcome to attend and to give their input. While it's expected that each member will want to talk amongst their own team, they are welcome to join the conversations going on at other tables.

OOC Information

These semi-weekly posts are for IC third-person comment war opportunities, to help encourage conversation and potential arguments. Starter topics will be provided below to help you. Threads are also welcome, but should be separate from the topics provided below. Threads or comment wars that extend to 10 total good-sized comments can be counted for activity check. If you have any questions, please let Ashley know. The hope is that you will use this opportunity for topical development that can lead to further plots.

P.S. No one is expecting anyone to be physics geniuses. Feel free to make stuff up as you go along.

When new travelers arrive, the nebula colors shift to blue and green at the point of origin. What’s causing the change in color? Can we recreate it?

Would it be possible to pinpoint an alternative reality and pull a specific person through the nebula? If so, who would we want to invite?

Are we talking only Star Trek alternative realities? Because from what Ambassador Spock said, having alternate Kirk here might be interesting, but would probably also lead to trouble.

Two Kirks?

Theoretically possible.

True. And it sounds like the other timeline's Kirk is more amicable than my doppelgänger was.

This timeline does not need two Kirks.

I'm not sure if this is related enough, but I feel like I need to bring up what we've come to call the Mirror Universe.

I'd love to hear more about this Mirror Universe.

Where I'm found we've discovered multiple Earths, and we've dubbed a couple of the others we've found as Earth-2 and Earth-3. Terribly original, I know.

There are technically an infinite number of quantum realities. Every major decision and even many smaller ones can create offshoots from the flow of time. The reality we're in right now splintered from mine thanks to an incursion from my timeline.

But the Mirror Universe seems to basically be opposites. Where the worse parts of humanity thrived, and they conquered the galaxy. An Empire, instead of a Federation.

Evil twins. More or less.

My Kirk was swapped with their Kirk due to a freak transporter accident. A hundred years later, DS9 had several run ins with that universe. The Empire had been defeated, and humans enslaved by an alliance of Klingons and Cardassians. Apparently, our Kirk convinced their Spock to attempt to reform the Empire. Weakened, they were overrun by the Alliance.

A lesson in consequences. There were several attempts by a human rebellion to use our technology and people to try to overthrow the Alliance.

On another note, too bad it's not as easy as it is to ask the Guardian of Forever to show us a time and place.

Not with the equipment we have. Theoretically if you have a star or similarly powerful energy source you could do it, but even in that case, the circuitry in this starship is woefully under capacity for the task.

Though if you could bring another Time Lord through, I'd appreciate it. Theoretically.

Ambassador Spock’s notes include something called the Slingshot Effect, a time travel method that requires moving in towards a sun as full warp, using the sun’s gravity to sling shot into an artificial time warp. Could this help any of our travelers?

This is perhaps one of the most ridiculous ideas I've ever heard. I can't believe Spock of all people—young or old—would ever document such a thing.

If older me from that other timeline was present, I would not have approved.

Do you remember what you did to accidentally make your wormhole? Theoretically, and using the knowledge of the Stargate System, we might be able to combine all the knowledge we have to at least try a test.

For a few years it was standard procedure. It was accidentally discovered when the Enterprise was falling into a collapsing planet. Cold starting the warp drive took them three days into the past. And you know, saved everyone's life.

Using that as the basis, the slingshot effect was used to study the past until it was deemed too dangerous to use regularly.

In 2286, the effect was used to bring the humpback whale from the 1980s, in order to prevent an ancient probe that had come in search of whales from terraforming Earth.

As far as I know, it's never been used to hop universes.

So it did actually work? What was the danger - simply moving towards the sun at such a speed? Were there any ill effects associated with it?
