Welcome to the Holodeck!

Each Saturday, join the Enterprise crew and your fellow travelers to meet new arrivals, catch up with those you haven't seen in a few days, or try a new drink. This week, the traveler liaison program, along with the help of the Deck 5 Lounge staff, have decided to theme the evening on the holodeck. Welcome to a forest getaway. It's late afternoon into evening, an outdoor bar is set up alongside a campfire, picnic tables, and a lake with canoes. Enjoy stargazing as the sun goes down.

Alicia didn't always work these events, but she was on the roster for this one. Thankfully it was a little bit different than the normal sorts which usually meant Alicia decided to be more creative with her drinks. She already had some themed ones for the teams trying to figure out how the heck they all got here, partly, alright, mostly because Katie was one of those leading one.

Standing behind the outdoor bar, she could almost believe the light breeze and heat from the fire, alright so it felt annoyingly real, but it did make her think about how she'd arrived, she'd just been on her way to meet her group of friends for a picnic.

"Sorry, what was it that you wanted?" She said blinking out of her daydream as she realized someone was saying something.

John chuckled softly at Alicia's obvious distraction. "I believe I was promised some new drinks to try," he drawled, flashing her a grin as he leaned on the bar, elbows resting on the counter.

Studying her, he wondered what she'd been thinking about when she'd seemed light years away for a moment. He tilted his head at her curiously. "I know this is usually your line, but do you want to talk about wherever you just were?"

Grinning when she finally focused and saw John standing in front of her she nodded. "Yeah, yeah, how about a Mighty Fine?" She said but didn't wait for him to answer as she started to make it regardless if he agreed or not. It was a rather fitting drink for him as it was.

Pausing while she muddled her smile fell a little bit. "That obvious huh?" She asked as a hint of embarrassment crossed her, she didn't like being that distracted, especially while she was working. Not a good look.

"A 'Mighty Fine'?" John grinned at her without giving her a real answer, but she was making it anyway. "What's that supposed to symbolize?" he asked, almost teasing her. She'd mentioned the drinks were going to have a theme.

"Maybe I'm just getting to know you," he suggested, watching her expression. He paused a moment before adding. "If it's something you wanna talk about, I'm a good listener, you know."

After muddling a couple of orange peels and a little mint she filled the glass with a good bourbon, a little orange juice and a touch of bitters, stirring it she added and orange peel for decoration. "If you can't guess, I might have to reevaluate how smart you are," she teased as she looked up and placed the glass in front of him.

Taking a moment to study his expression she smiled softly after a beat. "I was thinking about where I was heading before I ended up here, it was a picnic, so this setting..." she trailed off.

It was sad that Capt. Archer had left them, not that she thought he would have done it on purpose, but Hoshi knew they just had to keep pushing forward, so when this weeks Saturday social came around and she wasn't needed elsewhere, she decided to come and enjoy the Holodeck picnic style.

Standing by the lake, she watched as a few canoes paddled around, it was pleasant, comfortable even. With a glass of white wine in her hand, she sipped it slowly just enjoying the outdoors, or well, the fake outdoors.

A little ways from the main activity of the bonfire and drinking, Steve sat along the shoreline of the lake with a nice, cold beer helpfully provided by one of the bartenders. If you could forget the fact that this was all a made up scenario thought up and programmed by the geniuses behind the holodeck, there was a beautiful peace to the scene around them. The lake glittered under the evening sky and Steve forgot, temporarily, the longing that came with not being in Oahu.

He was luckier than most - he realized this and was thankful that he had Danny, Kono, and Chin Ho with him. A lot of people here had no one and had to start all over again, for as long as they were stuck. But he had three people that he considered his family and he could not be happier about that. Yet, Honolulu, those that he left behind, his work with 5-0, Lynn...

He pushed away thoughts of Lynn and the status of their relationship before he had been brought here. It wasn't something he wanted to think about right now. There was already too much loss to deal with without that can of worms. So he focused on the here and now, about how he would have to find a way to make himself feel and be useful.

Sam was still surprised by the holodeck, and it's abilities, she wanted to study it more, but she also didn't think that the crew would appreciate her taking it apart for the hell of it. Sure, she could holodeck doing it, but that wasn't the real thing.

She hadn't been to the Saturday night event in a few weeks now and decided to check this one out mostly because of where it was being hosted. After getting a beer she walked around a little bit, feeling the trees, looking for flaws.

Eventually, she found herself standing near someone she was pretty sure hadn't been here that long, but Sam could get so wrapped up in her work she wouldn't have noticed anyways. "A little surprising how real this can all feel isn't it?"

He found himself loss in thought by the time Sam happened upon him. He became aware of someone approaching, but didn't turn his attention away from the lake until the woman spoke.

Smiling a little, he nodded before speaking. "I'm going to be honest, I'm still trying to find the flaws. If there's something the programmers forgot, I haven't found it yet." The sounds of the insects around them, the breeze coming off the lake...it was all too real to what it would have been like in the real world.

After a brief pause, he added, "I won't admit this to my team, but I still can't believe we've found ourselves here."

"You and me both," Sam said looking down at the water, she kept expecting to see something to show the programming, but it just wasn't there. "I'd love to take it apart and look at how it all works." She admitted.

"Yeah, I keep thinking the same thing, sometimes I wake up trying to figure out if I'm dreaming or not." She really did sometimes wonder about this and if it was real.

"Col. Samantha Carter, US Air Force," offering her hand to him as she introduced herself.

"The would-be scientist in me would be right there with you, with taking it apart. But I admit that I'm not trained and wouldn't be any use putting it back together. Which would be a shame, since this is as close to home as we're getting," Steve said, gesturing out toward the lake and woods beyond it.

Reaching out for her offered hand, he shook firmly and offered up, "Commander Steven J. McGarrett, U.S. Navy, currently leading the 5-0 task force out of Hawaii. Nice to see fellow military out here." There was a small smile on his face, at meeting a fellow service person. There was a certain kind of comfort knowing that the person you were talking to had the same love for their country and people that you did; a bond formed, without even knowing the other person.

"Tell me, Colonel, does it get easier, being here?"

Seven hasn't stepped foot in a holodeck since there was a neural interface implanted in her neocortex that forced her to believe she was a French Resistance lounge singer when the Hirogen forced the crew to reenact violent simulation, most notably WWII. She recalled nothing of her time as Mademoiselle de Neuf, only what she experienced after her Borg implants jammed the signal the interface was feeding into her brain. It left her lost and scrambling to fall in line with a scenario of which she had no knowledge of. (Earth wars prior to First Contact were of little importance to the Collective.) She had no desire to play the role of another again or to find a way to fit herself into a world she didn't belong to — she was doing enough of that already while aboard this vessel.

Even more so, now that she's visibly withdrawn socially, falling back on routine and necessity. She's given a task, she performs it efficiently, returns to her quarters to regenerate, rinse and repeat. It's the mindless obedience of a drone without any of the warmth of the individual she had become in the wake of her liberation. A false comfort, an unhealthy way of coping with the dissonance and the constant disappearances that are affecting her more than she would like to admit.

For better or worse, the Borg were social creatures. Perhaps not in the traditional sense, but she was accustomed to the presence of others, and there was a time when losing a member of her unit would have been like losing a limb until it was grafted back into place with the reassignment of another. Being the lone, remaining crewman from her vessel feels much the same. Locutus ws gone, and Tony Stark vanished only to be replaced with an incarnation that does not recall his previous time here.

She missed Voyager. She missed the Cargo Bay and her Astrometrics Lab. She missed Ensign Kim asking her ridiculous questions, Lieutenant Tuvok's logical outlook, and even the Doctor's impromptu examinations. She hated it here, and there was no small part of herself that would rather rejoin the Collective than exist in a time and on a ship that was not her own.

And yet, here she was, lingering on the fringes of the campfire, looking up at the stars. The company was an illusion, both holographic and not, but it made her feel better. If only for a little while.

"The alignment of the stars has been altered in my time, both by the destruction of worlds and shifting orbits," she said to the nearest person, a poor attempt at a conversation starter. "The Borg were responsible for some, but not all."

Seven turned her calm, blue-eyed gaze on him. "The Collective has been responsible for the annihilation of thousands of worlds. An... unfortunate resolution to perhaps unnecessary conflict."

Feeling remorse for the things the Borg did — things she, during her time as a mindless worker bee, so to speak, often had not had a hand in — was new. She had a tendency to regard their actions in an almost positive light, recalling events and invasions, quoting acquired knowledge and demonstrating assimilated skills as if they weren't inherently horrific in nature. But she was getting better at taking the perspectives of others into consideration, in understanding that the way she saw things was perhaps corrupted, that she ought to take the viewpoints of others into consideration when speaking.

"Annihilation is not our—" A pause. "Not their ultimate goal. Perfection is, and they will use whatever means necessary to obtain the information and technology that will bring them closer to that goal. Sometimes worlds are collateral damage while in pursuit of perfection. Worlds resist regardless of how futile the attempt may be."

And yet, she readily conceded to his point. "No, they do not. I understand that better now than I did when I was part of the Collective. Granted, I did not possess the ability to understand, let alone think for myself."

As the new lead of the morale team, Katie thought she really ought to be at something like this or maybe that was just a really good excuse to come to a party. This ship was really different from home, but she liked it. She'd made some good friends here, she had a few key people from home and she really liked the work she was doing with the liaison office. Being offer the lead for ship morale had been a surprise, but she was excited about that, too. It was going to be fantastic implementing some of the ideas she'd already gotten.

After paying Alicia a visit at the bar, Katie had the drink her best mate had made just for her and she was making her way around the holodeck, taking note of the others who had showed up for this event. She was really pleased with how it had come together. The atmosphere was perfect, the breeze and the fireglow as realistic as the genuine article. She couldn't help being proud of the the work the rest of the liaison department and the lounge staff had done with it.

Looking around again, she couldn't help hoping she might run into a certain helmman, but she didn't let her linger on the thought for long as she focused on mingling.

Lissa was just the sort of person who wanted to tell someone when they'd done an amazing job, so when she saw one of the people who had been in charge of organizing this event she headed towards her. Lissa did like the change up, it gave a little bit more dynamic, and even though the ship was huge, a change was always nice.

"Katie right?" Lissa asked with a polite smile, she knew she was right, but given the number of people here who had people who looked like each other, she wanted to make sure. "I just wanted to come and tell you that this is an amazing job."

Rose totally approved of the change in scenery for this week's event. Going to the lounge was fun, but it was nice to feel like they were out in the open air, even if in her head she knew it was all an illusion.

Just like when Oliver had brought her here to the carnival he'd had programmed, everything looked and felt real. The drinks actually were, she knew, and she had to admit that Alicia had outdone herself in that area. She found a seat by the fire as she sipped one now. The warmth from the flames felt good against her skin. The water looked inviting, too, and she considered maybe checking out the canoes or even going for a swim.

Yeah, of all the things on the ship, this holodeck might just be her favorite. At least if they weren't counting people. She couldn't help smiling as she spotted Oliver over by the bar. When it came to people, he was definitely near the top of the list of those she was happy to know here.
