HOSHI SATO + JONATHAN ARCHER
a day or so after the opera
MESS
G
COMPLETE

Being on the Enterprise of his future had been a big adjustment for Jonathan. The ship was certainly bigger and the technology was much more advanced. In fact it was all a little overwhelming at first but he was starting to feel more comfortable. Even though good portion of his crew was here, he didn’t feel like he’d spent enough time with them which was why he’d agreed to go to the Klingon opera that Jadzia had programmed on the holodeck. It had been quite an experience and he was curious to see what Hoshi had thought of it. With her love of languages, she must have found it fascinating.

He finally caught up to her one day at lunch in the Mess and he walked over and sat down with her. “So how did you like the Klingon opera,” he said with a grin. “I can safely say I have never seen anything like it.”

“Captain!” Hoshi greeted with a big smile, it was strange, she did feel like she hadn’t spent as much time with the people from their ship as one might expect. Probably because there were so many interesting people here and so much to hear, at least that’s what she’d blame it on.

“It was amazing, Reed was right, it was,” she paused trying to make sure she picked the right word. “Loud, but language wise it was really pretty incredible, I sort of wonder what it would sound like in some of the other dialects and how much some of it would change, I meant to ask Jadzia but I haven’t yet. She was telling me about operas that haven’t even been written yet, I guess she’s got the opposite problem that we do with the whole time travel thing.”

Archer smiled. “I suppose she does. When I first arrived, people were calling me Admiral and that was a lot to take in. I’m a long way from that at home but I guess that’s what’s coming. This whole ship is so far beyond our Enterprise, it’s incredible.” He had looked at the blueprints and schematics and it was breathtaking to realize how far Starfleet had come over the years. “I also apparently live to be really old, like over a hundred.” he laughed. “I can’t imagine that either.”

He had gotten a cup of coffee before he’d joined Hoshi and took a sip. “Klingons seem to enjoy things loud. The louder the better I’d say. That’s another thing that’s hard to take in, the fact that the Klingons eventually join the Federation. I would have never seen that one coming.”

Hoshi didn't even try to hide her small laugh and smile. "Sir, of course, you are going to become an Admiral, we all know that now living well over a hundred, I mean you do get up quick after a good hit, so I can see it." Hoshi knew she shouldn't always tease a superior officer, but sometimes she couldn't help it. After all, they'd all been through so much together.

"I know! It's amazing to think through the things we've seen with them, to them being part of something you pretty much created, the whole being in the future thing I always feel like I'm so far behind, or people give me really weird looks, I'm sure you get more of it, Admiral!"
Hoshi was right, he did feel out of sorts sometimes when the people from Starfleet of the future would remark about something he had done. “It’s strange,” he finally said. “It sounds like I accomplished a lot but it’s hard to imagine all that right now. I’m glad to know that I always kept a beagle around though. Apparently I had one even when I was an old man still trying to teach at the Academy.” He’d taken a lot of teasing about his dog and the fact that he insisted on taking him along on their mission but Jonathan didn’t care. Porthos was truly his best friend and he was good company.

"Tell me about it! I've had people tell me all about what they've read about me. Sometimes I think the books exaggerated." Hoshi admitted.

Grinning at his comment of Porthos, she couldn't help it. Hoshi always had a soft spot for animals. "I've always thought that Porthos brought a lot to our ship, and honestly he sometimes noticed things that we didn't."

“Well of course I agree with you about that,” he grinned. “But you’re right. Animals bring so much to our lives, they’re trusting and loyal and sometimes I trust Porthos’ judgement over some people I’ve known. He seems to like it here, I was a little worried about him but I talked
To the people in charge of the holodeck and they made a program that’s a perfect rendention of the park I used to walk him in in San Francisco so we go there at least once a day, sometimes more. I enjoy it too, it’s peaceful.”

"That's good that he seems to be enjoying it here, I'm sure there are a lot of people interested in petting him too, given the wide range of people here," Hoshi said with a smile. "It's kind of surprising sometimes how many different kinds of species there are too, not that it's that surprising seeing as what we've been doing for the last few years and the people we've met, but just the concept of the different earths."

“I’ve met people from galaxies that we never even knew existed on board this ship,” he shook his head. “Humans were always so arrogant and thought they were the only ones in the universe. Well, we know that’s not true now but even at that I don’t think I was prepared to think about the fact that there might entire galaxies out there that are nothing like ours.”

"Or how there are so many different versions of Earth and things I still considered to be sort of supernatural, it's remarkable." Hoshi agreed with everything he was saying. "I'll say one thing. I don't think any of us are ever going to get bored here."

He shook his head. “You’re right about that. We’ve got witches and wizard and something called Jedi Knights…...that’s more than enough to keep us busy. Those are just the ones that I’ve seen on the network and actually read about. I have no idea how many people are actually here but it seems like a good many.”

"I was talking to T'Pol the other day, and she mentioned that they still don't know why or how people are coming or what makes them leave when they do too," Hoshi said as she thought about it. "It's weird not knowing how long we're going to be someplace, especially this far into the future."

Jonathan had been looking into what was known about how they got here and the truth was that there wasn’t much information. “I don’t think they really have an idea,” he said. “I know they’re trying to work on it but who knows how long that will take or if they’ll actually figure it out.” Going back wouldn’t be such a bad thing although he was enjoying this new world a good deal. “I wonder if we’ll remember any of this if we do go home or if it will just fade from our memories.”

"And what would all of that future knowledge mean for the actual future," Hoshi added with a slightly nervous look. "There is a lot about remembering that would be amazing but it could also be really, really dangerous."

She had a point. He didn’t know a lot about time travel other than the fact that it was possible but he knew that any change could shift the whole balance. “You’re right. I guess it’s best if we don’t remember. Some things are best left to the unknown. Let the future unfold as it will.”
