Who: Bones & Carol
When: This upcoming Friday evening, 226407.28
Where: The lounge
What: Drinks and overdue celebrating
Rating: PG, I suspect
Status: Complete

Pleased that his Friday shift had proven to be smooth and no one on board had done anything stupid like they typically did for the start of the weekend, Bones was able to get off the clock a little earlier than expected. He sent a quick message to Carol and told her he'd been in the lounge when she could get away.

It took some sweet talk to get drinks from Lucifer—why the manager was behind the bar on a Friday night was anybody's guess—and then he took a seat over in the far corner, quiet and relaxing. Bones still wasn't sure what to make of the drink request; this was supposedly to celebrate not dying by torpedo, a number of years ago. Whether an excuse or a genuine desire to celebrate so long after the fact, Bones simply wasn't used to drink requests for a fellow female officer.

And, if he was being honest, he was glad that he got there ahead of her, so he could relax a bit with his drink first.

Whatever this was, Carol didn't think it was a date. At least she hadn't intended it to be. Not really. It was more of her trying to get to know him better.

She'd been intrigued by the doctor ever since first working closely with him. Now, when she took shifts in medical, she got to see more of him. Sure he was grumpy and overall pessimistic, but Carol found that she liked him anyway. His personality amused her, though she was unsure if telling him that would upset him or not.

Carol arrived to find Bones already in the Lounge, and she grinned at him as she joined him at his table.

"I'm glad we were able to find time to do this."

"So am I," he said with a smile as she joined him at the table. "You ready for a drink? I'm sure we can get someone's attention."

Among other things, he was starving, and needed something to eat. He stomach rolled and growled in protest and he made a sour grimace. No matter what this was, he didn't need Carol to think he was starving himself. "Maybe some fried food, too."

Carol gave an involuntary laugh at his rumbling stomach. "Yes, please. When was the last time you ate?"

The real question was could he remember the last time he ate? She knew he was often busy and probably forewent meals. Carol was guilty of that too when she was particularly engrossed in something.

After calling one of the servers over, Carol ordered a beer and some potato skins, just to have something to nibble on since she wasn't starving.

Bones laughed and shrugged, ordering his own fried chicken and and potato skins. "I'm pretty sure I ate breakfast this morning. I forgot about lunch, which is more usual than it should be."

He smiled and leaned his elbows on the table while they waited for their food and beer. "So, what made you decide we needed this celebration a few years too late?"

Carol didn't want to mother hen him, because she was sure that was both annoying and uncalled for, so she kept her annoyed face to a minimum. He was a grown man and she did not need to be worrying about him.

There was a slight laugh at his question while Carol tried to think of the best way to answer it. "It's the first real chance we're getting to have it," she replied. "I don't know... everything was so crazy with Kahn, but I felt like we.. hit it off, you know?"

It was her way of saying that she was fond of him. She found his pessimism and dry humor amusing.

"Did we?" As soon as the question was out, he realized it sounded slightly offensive, and he shook his head. "I mean, I think we did, hit it off. Certainly we worked well together."

That was possibly the worst save ever, so he opted for a long swig of beer.

Carol cringed a bit at that. At least he tried to save himself. "Well.. I thought we had, at least."

She hadn't gotten any romantic vibes off of him, like he was interested in her or anything, but she had thought they'd worked well together. And maybe she thought she'd get to know him a bit better and see if there was any spark there. Perhaps there wasn't. Carol knew that he was divorced and and had a good deal of mistrust for women in the romantic sense.

"No! No, you're right. We did. I just meant, I wasn't sure if we—well, um—urgh."

He took a long gulp up beer and let out a sigh, shaking his head. "In case it isn't abundantly clear, I'm dreadful at niceties, and I'm not always very good at reading people and situations. Medical ailments I can do in my sleep. People I deliberately trained myself out of. It's nothing personal, Carol, I promise."

She let him struggle to get out what he was trying to say, then nodded slightly at his explanation. It wasn't like she hadn't noticed he wasn't good at social situations. Frankly, she kind of enjoyed his bluntness. It was refreshing sometimes to not have to beat around the bush. She took another sip of her beer before continuing.

"Why did you train yourself out of people?"

"My ex. She was—well, let's just say the divorce was not amicable and I ended up joining Star Fleet after listening to a counselor. But part of what I had to do to get myself through military training was telling myself I wouldn't be friendly, I wouldn't get chummy, and I wouldn't even attempt to date. Bury myself in my work and training and focus there."

He leaned forward and shrugged. "Obviously that's not something I need to do anymore, and I am over the divorce, really. But I didn't see much reason to break my habits."

Carol found that kind of sad, actually. She'd always been a relatively friendly person. She had a good childhood, and a good adulthood for the most part, until her father's betrayal. There was a lot of that she was still working through, though she liked to think that shutting out everyone wouldn't do much to help.

"Is this a date?" She asked with a teasing smile on her face. She couldn't help herself.

Bones chuckled and shook his head with a bit of a shrug. "You were the one that wanted to do this. You tell me."

She mirrored his shrug. "I think it's just us having a drink."

Carol didn't want to put any pressure on him and she wanted him to be comfortable while they got to know each other. If he thought it was some kind of serious date he might be uptight and even more awkward than usual. It was better to keep it friendly and casual.

"Just us having a drink it is," he parroted, smiling at her as he did so.

He settled in and relaxed, glad to not feel any pressure. A drink he could handle. He could even just have a good time, perhaps.
