setting. Oliver’s room; 12:01am May 16
warnings. Language & booze
description. Celebrating Ollie’s birthday.
status. Complete

Rose had found Oliver’s wallet when they'd gone swimming in the holodeck-made ocean and when she realized how close his birthday was, she knew they had to celebrate. She'd made a small chocolate cake with the replicator that she hoped would be edible and had even managed to score a decent bottle of vodka.

It was a minute past midnight when she showed up at the door to his quarters. Rose knocked softly, hoping she wasn't disturbing his roommate. When he opened the door, she flashed him a grin.

“Happy Birthday, old man,” she teased, her eyes sparkling with humor. “What are you now? Like, 50?”

Oliver hadn’t even realized the date until he saw Rose at the door. With the whole stardate thing, it was easy to get mixed up. “I….thanks,” he said with a sleepy smile. “And no I am not 50, I’m only 28 so I have a few good years left in me.” He leaned in and kissed her on the forehead and when he pulled back, he raised an eyebrow at her. “How did you know it was my birthday? I barely even know what month it is, much less the day.”

“I have my ways,” Rose answered coyly, grinning at his surprise. “Hopefully the cake is good. I mean, I didn't bake it myself if anything, just got it from the replicator, but it's not like I've had replicated cake before.” Even if it sucked, she figured he should have cake on his birthday. Just because her last birthday had sucked didn't mean he shouldn't have a good one.

“Well so far the food from the replicator hasn’t been bad so I’ll take my chances. If it sucks, we just won’t eat it. It’s the thought that counts anyway.” Oliver was touched that she had gone to the trouble to find out his birthday and even to make plans for the two of them. It was sweet and it made this place feel a little bit more like home. “Let me put a shirt on and we can figure out where to go. I’d say we could stay here but I don’t want to wake Bodhi up.”

Rose had really been enjoying the whole shirtless look and she made a face when he mentioned getting a little more dressed. “Are you planning in this being a super loud celebration?” she teased. “I mean, you guys do have your own bedrooms. Or we could go up to the observation deck or something if you want.”

“He’s a light sleeper,” Oliver explained. “But you’re right. I don’t imagine we’ll get that noisy. Unless you’re into that.” He grinned and stepped back so she could come in. “and if we’re staying here, I’ll just forego the shirt.” It was more comfortable anyway and Rose had seen him without a shirt before so he knew that his scars wouldn’t bother her even if sometimes they still bothered him.

“Hmm, noise can have its fun sides, but I think we can manage to keep it down.” She definitely appreciated the whole shirtless look he had going on and she didn't try to hide her approval as she stepped past him into his quarters, handing him the bottle.

“Thank you very much,” he said and shut the door behind her. “Just go on in there and I’ll see if I can find some plates or something to put the cake on. Maybe a paper towel, there’s bound to be something.” They all usually ate in the mess but every now and then Oliver would make something and eat in his apartment.

Rose nodded and made her way into his bedroom and made herself comfortable on his bed. The rooms weren’t very big and there weren’t a lot of choices in where to sit, but somehow she didn’t think he’d mind very much.

Oliver closed the door and joined her on the bed. It was either that or the one chair and he’d rather be close to her than sitting there which wasn’t very comfortable anyway. “So what kind of cake did the computer bake?” he asked with a grin. “Hopefully something good.”

“Chocolate, of course,” she said, grinning as she positioned the cake on her lap and helped herself to one of the forks he'd brought in with him. It was a small cake, just the right size for them both to share. She used her fork to cut off a decent sized piece and offered it to him. “It's your birthday. You should get the first bite.”

He laughed and took a bite of the cake. “This is good,” he said. “Computer baked cake isn’t so bad after all.” Oliver grinned at her. “I’m touched that you programmed me a cake, Rose.”

Rose shrugged. “Hey, you showed up with vodka the other night. I figured I should return the favor.” That was part of it, anyway. It was possible she also liked having an excuse to stop by and see him and that she liked him enough to want him to have a good birthday. “I should have found some candles for you to wish on,” she said. “What would you have wished for?”

Oliver hadn’t expected that question and he didn’t answer immediately. He could with to return home, to see what happened next, he could wish for a second chance to go back and do things differently…..there were a lot of things he could wish for but the truth was that he was actually happy here. “I have no idea,” he said, deciding to be honest. “Even though this is kind of a fucked up situation, I’m not unhappy here. I’m glad we met and that we’re getting to know each other so I guess I’d wish for things to just stay the way they are for a while.”

“Good answer,” she said, turning to grin at him. She really missed Lissa, she missed parts of home, but she had to admit life was better here than it had been for her recently. It was less complicated, but she’d also seemed to leave a lot of her problems behind. “I think I’d like things to stay the same for a while, too.”
