Poe was very much looking forward to the excursion they were going on today and while the destination was very much a part of that most of his anticipation was focused on the woman who was sat next to him. Jaina had agreed to accompany him to Alcatraz and as a result they were now on a boat which was taking them to their destination.

He'd done a little reading about the small island and it's history as a federal prison. "Apparently the name Alcatraz means pelican in a language of this world, a pelican is a indigenous animal on this planet" he told Jaina as they began to slow down to dock on the island where the remains of the building were located"

Jaina had enjoyed the time she'd been spending with Poe. They'd talked a few times since that night in the lounge and when he'd suggested they go on the Alcatraz excursion, she'd been more than eager to say yes. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, thinking that he was really quiate attractive but seemed completely unaware of it which made her like him even better.

When he he mentioned the meaning of the island's name, Jaina looked at him with a grin. "You looked that up? I"m impressed, Poe, you did your homework," she teased. "but that's interesting. I wonder if any of those birda are still around?"

Poe couldn't deny that he enjoyed Jaina's company, she was very attractive of course but she was also smart, funny and they enjoyed a shared love of flying. Anybody who loved being a pilot as much as Poe did was always going to become a friend.

"I did look that up" he admitted, he may have been hoping to impress her, "That I am not sure of, the article I found and read didn't say. But perhaps, if they did not become an extinct species. We shall have to keep a look out"

"We will. It's been interesting seeing this world. It's a lot different from anywhere I've been before." Jaina had been to a lot of planets but never one that had more than one type of ecosysterm. Earth seemed to have a little of everything. "Earth has something for everyone it seems. People who like living near the water, there are cold places, deserts, take your pick!"

They had pulled up to the dock by then and were getting off with the other passengers. Jaina looked up to the top of the hill where the tall tower of the lighthouse stood. She felt a slight chill and shook her head. "There's been a lot of sorrow here," she said softly. "I'd expect that of a prison, I just didn't realize it would hit me right away."

Poe nodded, "There is a varied and interesting history on this planet" he agreed, it was unlike most of the planets he'd visited too. "It wouldn't allow too much boredom I imagine, if you wanted a change all you need do is go to another part of the planet"

Looking concerned Poe stepped closer, laying a gentle hand on her arm, "Are you alright? We can go back if it makes you uncomfortable" He may not have the force but he knew enough of it and had seen Leia react to things enough to recognise some signs.

She ahook her head and looked up at him. "No, I'm fine. It'll just take a miinute to get used to it.." It shouldn't have surprised her, she knew what this place had been in the past, but she hadn't anticipated that it would be so strong. "It's funny to think that this place is beautiful in its way, like down there where the flowers are blooming." Jaina pointed to an area that appeared to be a flower garden further down the way. "I did some reading too and it said that the people who worked here actually lived here with ther families but the housing area was situatated in such a way that it was below the prison and the children never saw the prisoners."

Jaina couldn't imagine what that must have been like but she'd lived in some strange situations herself. "Let's go, I'm find now." Without thinking, she took his hand and gave it a squeeze. It felt better having someone to hold on to but mostly she jsut wanted to hold his hand.

"It's certainly a unique kind of prison" Poe said, still watching her carefully, ready to help should his assistance be needed, "But it's good there was some kind of happiness here, I mean trying to keep up a normal sort of life for the children is a good thing" He knew the people here must have done something to deserve being incarcerated but the children were truly innocent.

"Alright, just tell me if you find it's too much" he smiled at her, squeezing her hand in return and keeping it in his as they moved to go inside the old building.

"That is true. Supposedly impossible to escape from according to what I read although a few managed." She looked out toward the city for a moment and then back at Poe. "I've always believed that the worst prisons were the ones inside yourself. The people who were here had a lot of time to think about that."

As they stepped inside the building, she paused for a moment to let herself get used to what she was feeling. Once she had, she smiled up at Poe. "Thank you. I promise that I'll let you know if it gets to be too much." She'd faced some hard experiences in her life and while she'd expected to feel some of the lingering sorrow here, she was surprised at how strong it was. Although compared to what they'd all been through at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong, it wasn't that bad. "You do the same," she said. "if anything gets to you, tell me."

"From what I've experienced no place is ever completely impossible to escape from" Poe said, though many places claimed it was so. "I think you're right there, we have the ability to trap ourselves in far worse ways than any outside influences"

Poe smiled back when she turned to him, she really was beautiful when she smiled like that and Poe was once again grateful that she seemed to enjoy his company. "I'll let you know" he promised, though he was lucky in that he couldn't sense any of the past misery within the walls. Keeping hold of Jaina's hand he led them further inside once she was ready, "It's interesting that it's still so intact" he commented as they looked around, most places would have built something new or turned the building into something else once it's use as a prison had ended.

"That surprised me too," she replied. "From what I read, it's was a national park for a long time but after the Federation was formed, I'm surprised that it didn't get turned into some kind of building for Starfleet." Jaina had been spending her free time learning more about the world they were in specifically Starfleet. If this was going to be a long term thing, she wasn't about to stay grounded.

As they walked along, she listened to the aduio tour they'd been provided via an ear bud. The speaker was very well informed but nothing prepared Jaina for the view when they stepped out into the recreation yard at the very end. The view of the city from there was breathtaking and she looked up at Poe. "Can you imagine? This is so beautiful yet if you were a prisoner, you saw this everytime you canme out, knwoing you couldn't go home." she shook her head. "that's a little too much to put someone through if you ask me."

Poe nodded in agreement, "It's well located for some kind of observation building or something along those lines" It was central but not in the heart of the city and he'd have thought it would be ideal for holding whatever secrets Starfleet were hiding, because surely there were some. Even if it was just technical plans and the like.

Poe found the audio tour to be quite good, it was definitely interesting to hear about the kind of world this planet had been when the prison was first built. "Beats any other punishment they could have offered I think" he said, because she was right being able to see the city like this everyday but knowing you were cut off from it must have hurt. He shifted their joined hands so that now their fingers were interlinked as they continued to look at the city and the water and the beautiful bridge. Being stuck on this island would have been it's own kind of torment.
