WHO: Mary Crawley & Tony Stark
WHEN: 226405.24
WHERE: A Napa Valley winery
SUMMARY: Mary and Tony catch up. Also wine.
WARNINGS: TBD?

Mary wasn't sure if wineries were prevalent in this part of California during her time, but she had to admit that the wine they produced was quite good. She and some of the travelers had signed up to do a tour of three wineries in the area, each with a tasting and glasses for purchase if they wished. They were at stop number two, and Mary was on glass number two, this time of a Riesling. She was trying to limit herself so that she wasn't completely sloshed by the end of the tour.

This winery had a nice courtyard where people could sit and enjoy the views of the vineyards. If Mary hadn't known, she would have suspected that she was in Italy. She spied Tony sitting by himself and decided to sit next to him. It had been a while since they had caught up.

She smiled as she took her seat, hoping that she wasn't disturbing him. "Enjoying yourself?"

Tony was trying to pace himself, which was basically him being on his best behavior. But a gorgeous high class winery wasn't exactly the right place to get as drunk as he was capable of. Those sorts of pursuits were probably best kept to... somewhere else.

He had a glass of red in his hand, and he swirled it around a bit as Mary took her seat. "Me? No. You're good, Princess. I was just... You know. Taking in the scenery. Enjoying the tour so far?"

Mary furrowed her brow. "Why aren't you enjoying yourself?" she asked. "I think it's been quite lovely so far. All of the wines I've tasted have been very good." She bought two bottles at the last place and would probably buy at least two here. It was a stockpile for when she was back on the ship.

"Did I say I wasn't?" He asked, blinking his eyes a few times in confusion. But he supposed it kind of looked like he wasn't, the way he was all sitting off by himself. Taking in the scenery like a depressed mime or something.

His shoulder shrugged, "That's fair. I guess I kind of look like I'm not. The wine's good, though. I'm probably gonna buy a case of this stuff."

The glass he'd been nursing was really good. The kind of thing he thought would pair well with some good Italian food. "You can't really ask for a better view, either. Wine country's an old standby for romantic scenery."

"Yes," she replied. "I asked if you were enjoying yourself and you said no." How many glasses had he already had? At least it did not seem like she was disturbing him.

"I've already bought two bottles at the last winery. This is good though," she said, holding up her glass. Unlimited funding from Starfleet meant that she could treat herself to a bottle.

Tony was right about the scenery, with a temperate climate and rolling hills. It was delightful to sit outside. "Is something bothering you though?"

Tony thought back to how the conversation had started, and then stared at his own glass as if asking himself the same question that Mary was. "Huh. No, you know, I thought you were asking me if you were disturbing me. Totally just put extra words in your mouth and ignored the ones you were saying. I am, though. It's nice, it's peaceful."

"There's just a lot on my mind. You get used to a certain way of life, you know. You probably get that, actually. Your old life was filled with stuff. Standards of living, social requirements, scheduling. What's that you're drinking there? Maybe I'll try a glass." He wasn't generally a fan of the white wines, but if Mary was enjoying it then it was probably exceptional. Mary was a woman who had extremely good taste.

"I'm glad you're alright then," she said with a nod. With her date? with Jim coming up, Mary also had a few things on her mind. Fortunately the wine was very relaxing.

Mary definitely understood what he meant about a standard of living. Hers had definitely taken a dive when she had woken up on the Enterprise. She was dealing with it. Being here was nice though, almost like old times. "It's a reisling," she replied. "Quite good."

"Reislings, those are sweet and a little dry, I think?" Tony replied, trying to dig into the depths of his wine knowledge. It was cool to know a few pairings, mainly when trying to impress women. Not that he was trying to impress her.

What Tony always appreciated the most about Mary was that he could just be him around her. "You got any big plans while we're here on Earth? I heard we might be touching down in Vegas at one point, I'm pretty excited about that."

"Yes," she said. "I normally drink a chardonnay or merlot, but I decided to try something different."

It was funny that he was so comfortable around her - not that Mary didn't like it. Perhaps it was because he felt he didn't stand a chance with her. That was probably untrue, if they had met under different circumstances. As it was, they were fine friends and Mary was interested in another man.

"What is Vegas, exactly?" Mary had heard people talking about it, but it didn't mean anything to her.

"Uh... Oh right. I guess it was settled after your time, wasn't it?" Tony said, thinking back to the history of the place. It was a fairly 'new' development compared to the storied history of some cities in the United States.

His hands made this motion, like he was trying to indicate the height of the buildings, "When I'm from, Vegas is... Imagine tall buildings shining in the sun because they're mostly glass and steel. And flashing lights, people awake at all hours. Most of the interesting stuff happens on the strip - it's where all the casinos built up. So you've got gambling, night clubs for dancing, bars, shopping, restaurants, live shows, actual culture. You name it. The streets are always busy with people. And then the rest of the city stretches out for miles. Since - desert, so lots of space. Most of it's not as interesting as the strip though."

Mary inclined her head and nodded. "Gambling, then. I think in my time Americans went to Atlantic City for that." She sipped her wine. "I do enjoy cities from time to time, though I cannot say that I am a gambler, other than the occasional poker game."

She had a good poker face. Maybe she would go just for the experience of having seen it.

"Ah, yeah. It's like Atlantic City only with a lot more glitz and glamour. Rich people have a lot of sway there, lots of tourists from other countries. I once rented out a two floor suite in a hotel for three thousand bucks a night. Top class, hand painted decorations. It even had a catering area." Tony didn't remember much of the rest of his stay there, but it wasn't that important. The important part had been that it was fun, and that Vegas had a lot of swanky places people could go to get themselves into trouble.

That made him grin, "You can get into a lot of trouble in Vegas. Also - lots of poker there. I bet you'd kick people's ass at that. We could sign you up for some."

Mary was curious to see what Tony was like in his prime, when he was a bit reckless and spent money like it was nothing. On the ship he seemed a bit more subdued, perhaps because there wasn't anything to throw money at - and he technically didn't have any here.

A smile crossed her lips. "I would rather play against people from the ship than complete strangers," she said. Honestly, she didn't think she was good enough to go up against someone in a truly competitive game. A mostly friendly game would be a better start.

Sometimes, Tony missed his younger self, too. Younger Tony had been confident, reckless. Suave, charming... but also a huge asshole. Younger Tony thought he was invincible, and that nothing would ever touch him after his parents' death. Too much had passed for him to ever go back.

It'd actually been something he'd been ruminating about before Mary had sat with him. But he pushed those thoughts away and smiled at her fondly. "We could probably set up some kind of weekly poker night, you know. That might be fun. Friendly little wagers. The chips don't mean much but who cares? It's about skill."

Younger Mary had been kind of a cold bitch. Even she could admit that. This version of her was probably better. Thank goodness for growing up and getting wiser.

"I might be interested if you do," Mary replied. "It has been a while since I have played." Playing cards was on the list of things that weren't considered ladylike by women of her grandmother's generation, but Mary didn't particularly care. At least she hadn't started smoking.

"A few practice matches to shake off the rust and you'd be fine, Princess." Tony replied, nodding his head. It was decision time. There were decisions he didn't want to make but this one was easy. "I'll talk to Sauron, see if he can give us the lounge some weeknight. We can set up a poker table and everything."

He was pretty sure those were easy to replicate. "So... how are things going with you two now, anyway? I see you're not completely avoiding each other anymore."

Mary nodded. "We talked, finally, and I think he understood why I had such a reaction to what we'd done. We've agreed to put it behind us."

It would take a bit of time for them to be completely comfortable again, but they were making progress. She had really missed having him as a friend. Whoever thought she'd be such good friends with Lucifer himself?

"That's good. Glad to hear it. It was pretty weird from out here, watching it all go down. I just wanted to smush the two of you back together." Tony's hands came out, moving towards each other like as if they were actually smushing something. "For all the good that would have done. Probably not a lot."

He paused, and squinted his eyes a bit, "In fact, I'm pretty sure that would have just made it worse. Oh well. It's fixed now, that's the important part."

"Yes, I think that would have made it worse."

She and Lucifer had to come to terms with what they had done, each of them in their own time. Mary hated that it had hurt their friendship, as that had never been her intention. At least things seemed to be heading back to normal now.

"I'm glad you cared enough to worry about it though," Mary said.

"Of course I care, Princess." He held his hand over his heart for a second, in the international gesture of 'these words are very important to me'. He was speaking as seriously as Tony ever did.

"I'm not good at it, the caring. I don't always connect, or check in, or follow up on people. One time I left Pepper on the roof waiting for a martini that never came because business came up. Forgot about her entirely. But I care how I can. So you know. For whatever that's worth."

She sensed his sincerity, and that was nice. He was trying. It was more than she could say about most people.

"I think you do care, Tony. You simply have trouble showing it sometimes." Mary could be like that as well, so she understood.

"Well..." Tony trailed off, and squinted a bit. Some part of him had that 'grumpy old man' reputation to keep, and he wasn't sure he wanted to relinquish his hold on that just yet. But Mary already knew he had soft and squishy insides, so he relented, and nodded his head.

"That's probably true. And I should probably go see about some of that Riesling before we head on to the next place."

Mary knew it was true, though she also knew about keeping up a reputation. She wasn't supposed to have feelings or emotions. The unfortunate thing was that she did.

"Do. It's quite good." She was content to enjoy the scenery until they called for everybody to get back onto the transport vehicle to the next winery.
