WHO: River Tam, Rick Castle.
WHEN: 226405.15.
WHERE: Hallway outside the mess hall.
SUMMARY: Mistaken identity shenanigans.
WARNINGS: TBD, none at start.

It was a good day to be River Tam, all things considered. Kaylee and Simon were there, and they hadn't left the Serenity stranded in the process. She hadn't somehow accidentally wished them there to the detriment of anyone else. The ship had calmed down, and though there were a few outliers - people more shaken up by the events than others, who couldn't put it right in their heads yet - River felt like she was finally back on an even keel.

Deciding it was time to get a snack, River flitted down the hallway towards the mess. It was one of her favorite places on the ship, most days. The galley had been the heart of her old ship, and River liked to people watch.

Today, however, she ended up stopping just short of entering. There was a guy in the hallway who looked like Mal. Without checking - Captain didn't like it when she read his mind - River ran up to him and pointed at him dramatically. "You were hiding! No one knew you were here and they didn't announce it, there wasn't any warning. Are you scared to use the Cortex?"

Meanwhile, Castle had just finished the breakfast shift in the mess hall and was heading back to he and Kate's room with a cup of coffee when a thin young woman came out of seemingly nowhere and started pointed at him and talking about.... something.

"Uhhh. What?"

"The Cortex? The... place on the computer where we're all talking to eachother. With our data PADDS?" River had hers tucked into a pocket, which she pulled out and waved around in front of him. "The Alliance can't follow us here, you know. We're probably safe as houses."

She looked confused by his confusion, though. This man seemed like he'd never seen her before in his life. "Are you from a different time?"

He knew what the PADD was, though he didn't know about a Cortex, or an Alliance. Castle wasn't quite sure exactly what was going on, but he thought he might have an inkling.

"I think you think I might be someone else.... Who do you think I am?"

"Oh..." River squinted up at him, then started walking around him in a circle, eyeing him up and down. It was as if she was inspecting him fully. This man wasn't wearing any of the things Mal usually wore.

She stopped when she got to the other side of him, and stared. "I thought you... but you're not him. You couldn't be. You don't remember the same things."

Which was the opposite of trying not to spook the people aboard with her abilities, but she was too thrown not to say something.

Castle had to admit that the girl was creeping him out a little. He'd run into his share of weird people here, and she was right up there.

"My name's Rick Castle. I'm guessing that I'm not the person you're looking for?" He must look an awful lot alike whoever she was looking for though, because she seemed adamant that he was who she thought he was.

"You aren't, no." River replied, her face falling into a frown. "That's wrong, you have the same face. I was looking for my Captain, his name is Mal. People aren't always who you expect them to be, I should have known, I guess. He would have said, if he was here."

She'd been looking forward to catching up with him, mainly to see if he remembered any of the things that she did. No one else on the ship from her 'verse did, and it was starting to eat at her.

"Sorry," Castle replied. It wasn't his fault, obviously, though it had to be frustrating for this girl who was expecting him to be someone that he wasn't. "What's your name, though?" Even if she seemed a little off, Castle liked meeting people. He was sure he'd see her again anyway. The ship was actually a smaller world than it seemed to be, and the travelers must stuck together.

"I'm River. River Tam." She held out her hand, in case he wanted to shake it. That was the way people introduced themselves properly, wasn't it? River hadn't gotten too many proper meetings since she'd gone off to the Academy, but she still remembered her manners. Mostly.

"It's not your fault, though. It's mine, I made a mistake."

"Nice to meet you, River." He did shake her hand. At least she knew enough for that. "I gotta say, I'm not sure if I should be upset or not at the fact that there is another person out there with this ruggedly handsome face."

On the one hand, who could blame the universe for making more than one of him? On the other, he would have preferred to be the only one with this face.

"That sounds like something he'd say. You two might have been friends." If there'd ever been two of them in one place, anyway. She wondered how that worked out. Could Mal come here?

She pursed her lips for a few seconds, then shrugged her shoulders, "Dresses a bit different. You're classier. It's a compliment."

That would be weird, being friends with a man with his face. He liked his face a lot, but seeing it on someone else might be unnerving.

"Thanks," he replied. "Where are you from then? Earth?" Sometimes it was still strange to ask that question.

River shook her head, "I'm from another place. Another system, still the same galaxy. And the future. In our timeline Earth is 'Earth-That-Was'"

She crossed her arms over her chest as she rambled off, "It was too crowded, people left in search of a new home. Terraformed all kinds of places. I was born on Osiris, it's a core world. But my home is a ship named Serenity now. Little, compared to this one. Weathered. She's been through a lot. And she makes a lot more noise."

"Earth-that-was?" Castle said with a raised eyebrow. "That doesn't sound good."

It was clear that this girl was from the future, because the things she was talking about weren't possible in his time. "Hey, is it ever weird to you when you run into somebody who's from your time, but the stuff happening to them isn't the same stuff that's happening to you?"

Multiple universes were a trip.

"Oh yes, very weird." River nodded sagely, like weird happenings were somehow part of her life, even if they were still weird. "I've got a brother and two friends here from my old ship. Simon's from way back, doesn't remember a lot. Book... he's a Shepherd. He's nice, has faith, like a stone. But he doesn't remember dying. It's hard. Kaylee remembers a little more than Simon but still not as much as Book and me."

She frowned, "But I remember the most. I never know what to say."

Honestly, weird happenings were part of his life too, though not the sci-fi or supernatural kind. He wished his life was that cool.

"Yeah, my wife and I are in that situation. She's from way in our future. It was strange when we caught up and so many things were different."

Castle tried not to focus on that though. The point was that they were here together and they would live this reality, not their past or whatever reality Kate had lived back home.

"It's good that you're together. I feel lost a lot of the time without Simon. He looks after me, keeps me grounded." Which even River would admit was something she needed. There were times, though, when she preferred Book or Mal's way of keeping her grounded than Simon's, which was usually overly fussy.

Still, Castle's story made her feel at ease about something else. "You didn't disappear. She thought you were still there the whole time?"

"That's good." Castle could tell that she was the type of person who probably needed some looking after. Maybe she was autistic? He wasn't exactly sure.

"Right," he confirmed. "Kind of weird, yeah? But she had been here longer than me, and I never noticed her missing either... though if she was in my future, I guess I wouldn't have noticed anyway. This place is all about messing with the space-time continuum apparently." It was confusing, but still pretty cool that he was living it.

River nodded her head. That decided that, then. "Of course, Book doesn't go on. He can't, only in our memories. But Kaylee left before that, that's when she came here. Only she was still there when I left. And the same with Simon. It's good, it means that the Serenity will be okay."

She'd been worried about her ship, and worried how the remaining crew would get on without her.

Castle tried to catch all of that, and he thought he did. The girl had a tendency to talk in riddles.

"It means you're still there too," he commented, "in some form or another." It was weird to think about that as well.

"I hope so. I'm the pilot!" River said, grinning. "Mal could pilot her on his own, but he'd still need a copilot. I'm better, he knows it."

It might have been weird to think about, but it was also a comfort. "I guess we keep going on, until we stop. No one misses us, maybe that's good."
