WHO: Mary Crawley and OTA
WHEN: 226405.01 afternoon
WHERE: Downton simulation of the holodeck
SUMMARY: Tea party! Open to anyone.
WARNINGS: Probably none

The tea party was set up back in the rose garden behind Downton. Since the weather was always beautiful in the simulation, Mary thought it might be nice to have it outside. Guests were still taken through the house to the back in order to show it off a bit. A long table was set with perfectly arranged place settings that included a teacup, saucer, plate, and silverware. Another nearby table was laden with tea pots and food. There was a gramophone playing soft classical music in the background, though Mary would later switch it to jazz in order to change it up a bit.

Since it was an open invitation, guests would be able to sit wherever they liked. Mary took the head of the table, where she could direct the goings on, though she would try to mingle later in order to speak to the guests. The footmen, even though oddly robotic, performed their jobs perfectly and saw to it that everyone had enough food and drink.

[OOC: Feel free to treat this like a party post, start your own top levels, etc.]

Tea Parties were not a concept that Padme was unfamiliar with, in fact they were one of the more fun types of social events to attend. This simulation was probably, she surmised, going to be different from her own parties hosted at her apartment on Coruscant. And she was right - Downtown Abbey couldn't compare. It was a gorgeous space, and the gardens were too lovely for words.

She found a seat near to Mary, but far enough to give her space if she wanted, and accepted a pouring of Darjeeling to start with. Two lumps of sugar were added, and then she settled in to people watch or have a conversation with anyone feeling friendly.

Mary smiled at Padme and leaned in to speak to speak to her. "I'm so glad that you were able to come. I hope that you have been settling in well."

She liked Padme because she seemed to have taste and an understanding of culture. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for everyone on the ship. Still, Mary was glad to have whatever guests showed up and hoped that they would find her ancestral home as beautiful as she did.

Padme returned the smile. It was wonderful to get the chance to share this experience, but she was also glad to have something to distract her mind with.

"Your tea party was well timed, It would have been a shame to have missed this. Has this home been in your family for generations? It reminds me of buildings we had by the lakes on my home planet. And... yes, I think I've been settling in well enough. There are a few things I miss, perhaps I can have your friend make something like this for me."

"We have, yes. My father is the fifth Earl of Grantham. My son will be the sixth." And the amount of blood, sweat and tears she had put in to making sure that the house and the land would remain in their family would be worth it for George. "She might. I think she enjoys creating these things. You would have to describe it to her in great detail, or show her some photographs if you have any." Mary was sure that there were some things off about this Downton, but it was close enough, at least to her memory.

"I came here with very little, I'll have to ask Ahoska if she came here with anything that plays vids or one of our pocket holoprojectors, but I doubt even then she would have one of my old home." Padme sounded thoughtful, like she was already trying to picture the space in her head.

"I might be able to sketch it. In any case, you never mentioned you had a son! I hope he is happy and well, wherever he is." Since it didn't seem likely that he was her with her. She could commiserate on that note.

"It seems the technology in your world rivals that of this one," Mary said. Back home, all of this wouldn't even be thought possible outside of a science fiction novel. It was wonderous.

Her smile was slightly sad when Padme mentioned her son. "Yes. He is three. I hope that he is well too and doesn't miss me too terribly. He has my family to look after him."

They would take care of him and make sure he had what he needed so that he could grow up an inherit his grandfather's title.

"Perhaps when we leave, some part of us remains behind. I have no other way to explain how things have developed for me and mine. It IS a bit different, since I died and so the end point of my own life is unchanging. But I believe that some of the other members of my family are from scattered places, and I think that if they disappeared when they came here we'd have heard of it." Which was hard to wrap ones head around, but most of the Solo/Organa/Skywalker situation was like that by default.

She took a sip of her tea, looking thoughtful, "I know that all sounds like a confusing tangled mess. Perhaps it is only wishful thinking. That your George grows up never knowing you were missing at all, because you were right there beside him the whole time. But... I know what it is, to wonder about how your children are getting on without you there."

That was a sad subject, and she gave Mary an apologetic smile. "My home is a vast collection of planets, some have technology far advanced to this, and others are still far behind us. We did have... holographic projections, but not in color, or as realistic as this. The images are a little shaky, and most often blue."

Mary tilted her head to the side at Padme's theory. Hadn't others who arrived here after their companions said that they never noticed that the person was missing? She hoped that the other woman was right and that some version of her was still back home with George.

"The only thing we have that could compare to that is the cinema, but films are in black and white and not nearly as clear as the images here."

"I've heard of the cinema, only since I came here." Padme said, nodding her head. It fascinated her sometimes, the way technology had developed in different places. "In my Galaxy, the holograms are more used for communications, or to broadcast events. We would have... theaters, concert halls. Live entertainment in cantinas, that kind of thing. And sometimes vids on the holonet, though I hardly got a chance to see those things."

She ducked her head at Mary as she selected a few pastries to try, "I was always too busy working. Even as a child, many of the vids I watched were old political recordings."

"My life seems so opposite of yours in that respect," Mary said. "I never dreamed that I would be doing any sort of work. After my husband died, I took control of the estate and the work that he planned to do so that I might be able to save it for my son."

She had never anticipated liking her work as much as she had. Perhaps it was because it was a labor of love with her family being the ones to benefit. It gave her a sense of purpose though, something she may never have realized she could do if she hadn't been put into that position.

"You may not have dreamed of it, but I believe you did the right thing in stepping up like that. And I can't imagine that you did a poor job of it, either. I know how hard you work here on the Enterprise. You were able to save the estate for him, I hope? Or... It's possible you don't know yet, given the timing." Padme frowned on that last note. So many of them had been pulled away from important things. "Well, I'm certain you were successful, regardless."

After taking a quick bite of one of her tea cakes (which was absolutely delicious), she added, "I don't think I had much of a choice, to be honest. My family has always been called to service, and I think my father would have been greatly disappointed in me if I hadn't taken after him. He made sure I had all the education I needed - probably too much of it, if you ask me. I was pushed into responsibility too young."

"That's very kind of you to say," Mary replied with a smile. She didn't think that she did all that much on the ship, but she liked that someone appreciated her efforts. "We have managed to stabilize our finances for the time being, so barring any complete disaster, Downton should be saved for my son." The idea of that made her very happy.

Mary took a sip of her tea. "You are royalty, so it is slightly different. Our royalty also has duties that they must uphold. I never went to an actual school though. We just had the governess come in and teach my sisters and I."

"I suppose it's true that I am, but only because elected Queens join the Royal House of Naboo for life." Padmé replied, shaking her head and looking a bit sheepish. "But we are what you would call a democratic monarchy. The people of Naboo elect their Queens. We serve a term, and then are free to serve the people after that in whatever way we see fit. Some retire back to their quiet lives and only come around on festivals. When my time was done, the new Queen offered me the Senator position because she knew I wanted to do more."

"What sort of things did your governess teach you?" Padme asked, while having some more tea poured.

"Our royals aren't elected. It is a lineage. Though at this point they do not have a lot of true power in our government. We elect our representatives as well. Or at least some of us do." She rolled her eyes a bit. "Not all women may vote yet." Mary found that silly. These days, almost all women knew how to read and keep themselves informed.

"The typical things," Mary said, before realizing that Padme may not know what the typical things are. "Reading, Writing, Maths, History, French, and etiquette. How to curtsey, that sort of thing."

"I hope you don't mind my saying that the place I come from seems to be a bit ahead of yours in that regard. French? That must be some kind of language? Etiquette is a classic, I think. I definitely had to learn that one, too. And dancing steps, all of those kinds of things."

Padme scrunched her nose up at the last, and then shook her head. "One can only tolerate the rigors of high class society for so long. I think I'm glad that I also learned how to fight."

She wasn't particularly surprised to hear that her time and place were behind compared to others. Mary was rather used to it by now, considering that most people on the ship were from far after her time.

"You learned how to fight?" That would definitely have been something that her grandmother would not have tolerated.

"The Royal Handmaidens aren't just ladies in waiting, they're also bodyguards. We're all trained to fight. Melee combat, tactics, and how to fire a blaster. A little bit of infiltration." Padmé replied, grinning. "I admit, I enjoy getting a chance to take part in more 'aggressive' negotiations sometimes."

"Goodness," Mary replied. "I cannot see our Queen fighting." Nor could she see herself or her maid Anna doing that. Poor Anna was the type to never hurt a fly. "I do miss my maid, though," she said. Anna was arguably the best female friend that she had, even if she was hired help.

"It was a surprise to many, including the two Jedi that were along for my protection. The look on Master Jinn's face when he realised I was the Queen." Padmé trailed off, and laughed a bit. "Those were easier times. But I do miss my maids. They were my closest friends. So often we end up holding our emotions deep inside of us, with no one to turn to. But we can turn to them, and I did."

Hearing that made Mary feel a little bit less pathetic. She smiled. "Anna is probably my closest friend as well. I suppose that's what happens when you have a person help you get dressed every day."

Not having her was something that she'd had to get used to here. Fortunately most of the dresses, even the ones starting to come into fashion in her time, were easier to get into than before. Not having to wear a corset helped as well.

"It definitely is," Padme agreed, nodding her head. Her every day casual outfits required less dressing than when she was queen, but everything she wore on the Senate floor required enough work that when she traveled 'alone' she still brought along C-3PO to help her.

She looked across the table at some of the other guests that were filtering in, and gave Mary a sheepish smile. "I should probably let you see to your other guests."

"Oh," she said. Padme was probably right. Mary didn't wish to be a bad hostess. "Well, I enjoyed speaking with you and hopefully we will get to talk again soon." It was good to meet someone like Padme, someone who seemed to come from at least a somewhat similar background. Mary liked her and really did look forward to talking with her again in the future.

Yang had been unsure of how she was supposed to actually dress for this kind of tea party, so she'd settled on a breezy yellow summer dress. She thought this might be fun. After all she hadn't actually done a tea party since she was little and those didn't really count.

She'd just have to rely on Blake and observing others so she didn't make an ass of herself.

"This place is beautiful."

Peggy always had to choose carefully how to spend her free time, but the idea of afternoon tea at Mary's home was definitely high on her list of things to spend her time doing. She settled into an open seat and worked on her tea, humming to herself as she glanced around. Once her tea was the way she liked it, she sipped it carefully.
