WHO: Leia Organa & Poe Dameron
WHEN: 226404.19
WHERE: Poe's quarters.
SUMMARY: Leia seeks out Poe to talk family things.
WARNINGS: Discussion of extra-marital affair at the least.

It wasn't any good to put it off any longer. Poe deserved to know the truth and Rey was looking forward to having a brother - a half-brother - to get to know better. It should be easy, really. How much about their relationship - General to Commander - would this change? How much could it? She had commanded a full military Resistance for half a decade and yet, for some reason, this seemed more difficult.

Leia found herself hesitating outside of Poe's quarters in the same way she had outside of Rey's before they talked. Then, she brought forth all of her years of political preparation and experience and touched the pad beside the door to chime in for Poe. She spent the time waiting for him to come to the door going over the best way to talk to him about this. In the end, she decided all it would take, she was pretty sure, was to be up front and tell him the truth. She was his commanding officer, after all, and she knew him well enough to know that's what he'd prefer.

She smiled at him when the door opened between them. "Poe," she said. "Do you have a minute?"

BB-8 was charging in the corner of the room after Poe had done some modifications on the power source at the wall. It hadn't been too hard with the little droid helping him and they were slowly getting settled here. Well as settled as they could anyway. It certainly helped that BB-8 was here and of course, Leia. Poe had the utmost respect for his commanding officer and friend. Nothing would ever dissuade him from following and believing in her.

Hearing the chime he hit the open button and smiled when he saw Leia there, "Of course" he said immediately standing a little straighter as he moved so she could come in, "Is everything alright?"

"Yes, there's nothing wrong," Leia said. "I just have something I need to talk to you about. I've been putting it off for too long." She rubbed the side of her neck and stepped in past him. She cleared her throat, hoping she wasn't coming across as anything other than conversational. Even if this wasn't going to just be a simple conversation.

"You can sit" he told her once she was inside, "Do you want anything to drink?" Poe had to admit he liked the little machine in his room which would give him water and other beverages when he asked for them. He could get far too used to that.

"You know you can tell me anything Gen...Leia" he told her, still tripping up sometimes on her name. She'd been the General for a long time.

Leia did sit, taking a deep breath and then shaking her head. "No, thank you. I'm fine, Poe." She folded her hands in her lap and kept her back straight. "Will you sit too?" she asked, watching him move and talk. She always appreciated that he wanted to take care of her, how loyal and supportive he was. She hoped that wouldn't change.

"I know you've met Rey. I don't know how much you've spoken with her about her background," she said, hesitating for only a slight moment. Then, she pushed on. "She's my daughter. Breha. I don't know -" How old would he have been when Breha was born? Fourteen? Twelve? "I don't know if you have any reason to remember her. You would have been on Yavin IV, I'm sure, and not on Hosnian Prime." Leia pushed her lips into a tight smile. And he would have been even older when Breha had been kidnapped and Leia didn't remember if Poe had been around when Kes came to her in those difficult weeks before all hope was lost. He hadn't stayed long; Leia hadn't been very kind to Kes during that time.

It was like a bandaged wound that needed re-bandaging. She needed to just rip it off, get straight to the point. "She's also your half-sister."

He nodded and sat down opposite her, wondering what it was she wanted to talk about. She appeared more nervous than he'd expected, she couldn't be worried surely? She knew he'd do anything for her didn't she?

His eyes widened when she revealed that Rey was her daughter, he'd had no idea Leia had another child. He'd have been about thirteen if he was guessing Rey's age correctly but it made sense he didn't recall her, as Leia said he was on Yavin IV at that time. And by the time she was abducted Poe would have been training to become a New Republic pilot, he'd never witnessed his fathers upset which was why Leia's next words hit him hard.

"My half-sister?" he repeated with a small confused frown, "But...how...I mean, what happened?"

His father had left the rebellion behind, they'd had a home on Yavin. After his mother died his father only left for brief periods of time for supply runs and...and to check in with old friends, he realised with a start. Leia was one of those old friends and it seemed Kes Dameron had done more than check in with her.

What happened. Wasn't that the question. Leia pressed her palm against her jaw for a moment and the tipped her head to the side as she regarded Poe. He looked like his father. She started to shake her head, to deflect the question, but changed her mind. "I'm sure you're aware that my marriage hasn't been very smooth," she said carefully. Most of the galaxy was aware that Leia Organa and Han Solo were apart more often than they were together. And that their fighting was legendary. But they stayed together. It just wasn't ever the way Leia might have pictured it in those early months after Endor, when celebrations lasted long into every night and the two of them believed they had their entire lives ahead of them. But this wasn't a story about her relationship with her husband.

"Your father has always been a good friend. Your mother as well. One of my closest friends. And I'm sure you know that Kes had a lot of trouble getting through losing your mother. We all did, of course, but she was his wife. And I was dealing with my own troubles." Or, more like, she was looking for ways to run away from them. Either way. "It didn't last more than a few months," she finished quietly. But it had happened, and so had Breha.

Poe appreciated that Leia didn't avoid answering him, he nodded a little when she mentioned her somewhat rocky marriage. It definitely wasn't a secret but he'd seem the love between them when they were together and just figured it was the way they worked. Obviously not everything was as it had seemed to him.

Poe's mother had died when he was eight and by his calculations this affair must have been when he was around thirteen maybe twelve which was 4 or 5 years after losing his mother. But he knew his father had never really gotten over it so it wasn't too surprising it had taken so long for him to find solace in the arms of Leia. He nodded slowly, "I remember him being gone, he said he'd needed to work some things out. After that he didn't leave much, I did the supply runs until I went into training" he said memories coming to him, though they were tainted with this new knowledge now.

Leia nodded a few times. She almost apologized but also didn't feel like she had anything to apologize for. Except maybe that it was kept as a secret and she was telling him now. "It was something we both needed at the time," she admitted quietly. Her thoughts drifted back to the few short months that Kes visited her now and again on Hosnian Prime. They enjoyed each other's company, and each other, whether just as friends or as lovers. It was unfortunate that their choices led to a rift between them when she found out she was pregnant.

"I ended it," she said a moment later. "Your father disagreed, especially once I found out I was pregnant, but - I ended it." She didn't know if that was going to change Poe's opinion of either her or of his father. "He did come back after the kidnapping, though we weren't able to find her." And Leia's shame was how she treated him then, with accusations flung out of heartbreak and worry over losing her daughter.

She touched the side of her hair and looked at him. "I know Rey is excited to have a brother," she said. "And I hope this won't change your opinion of her in any way except for the better." She didn't mention that she also hoped it didn't change his opinion of her too.

There wasn't anything to apologise for, not really. She had done what she had felt was right and it had obviously been his fathers choice not to tell him either. No, Poe knew there was no use placing blame anywhere really. Not now, there were more important aspects of this news.

Poe couldn't help but feel relieved his father hadn't just abandoned Leia when she fell pregnant. "It must have been hard, for both of you, when she was taken. Do you know who took her?" he asked curiously, perhaps there was someone they needed to seek out when they returned home.

"Of course not" he said immediately, he'd never take anything out on Rey. She was an innocent party in all this, the most innocent really. "I can't believe I have a sister. It's just..." he breathed out not knowing how to finish that sentence, "Thank you, for telling me" he added, he needed more time to process everything but he wasn't the sort of man to hold any of this against Leia either.

"It was very difficult, yes," Leia said. Probably more for Kes, who wanted to help and Leia had shut him out. Kes had barely known Breha, despite being her father. She spent more time as a child with Han, when he was around. Looking back on it now, knowing everything that Leia knew, she wondered if she might have done things differently. It wasn't fair of her to push Kes away like that. Would Breha have been taken if she hadn't? If Kes Dameron had been her father publicly? Leia's fingers curled against the side of her thigh and she pushed the thoughts out of her mind. "No, I have no idea who took her. And Rey doesn't know either. She has very few memories of much besides her time on Jakku." Leia hated admitting that too. Her daughter should have grown up differently, not abandoned on a distant planet.

Leia nodded. "You shouldn't thank me for telling you this," she said. She swallowed and stood up, getting the sense that maybe there wasn't much left to this conversation. "I know she's excited about it, too. The two of you will get on just fine, I'm sure."

Poe couldn't imagine what his father had been thinking, to know he had a daughter and not tell anybody and not be able to see her. Poe couldn't have done it, he'd have pushed to be part of her life but then he had the stubbornness of his mother in him. Having nobody to blame for the kidnapping must be hard, to not know who had taken her little girl away from her and abandoned her on some remote planet.

"Finn says she's a feisty one" Poe said also standing, "So it seems she's taken after you even if you have been apart" he added hesitating only momentarily before breaking all protocol and wrapping Leia in his arms. Hugging your commanding officer wasn't usual practice but Poe had never been one for entirely following the rules.

"Yes, I see a lot of myself in her but also your father - " But whatever else Leia was about to say was cut off when Poe unexpectedly hugged her. She was surprised, but pleasantly so. (And that wasn't just because Poe often reminded her of Kes.) It was also because she hadn't been able to completely sense how he was feeling about everything she had just told him. And because being embraced like this wasn't something that happened often. Her brother was the one with whom she was most affectionate, and even then, she hadn't seen him in years until now, and now they were - well, they had things they were working through too.

She accepted the hug with a slow sigh and pressed her cheek against his shoulder. Her arms wrapped around him and pressed into his back. Leia nodded a little bit.

He hadn't meant to confuse her by his lack of obvious response to everything but he was honestly just still processing it all. But he definitely wanted her to know that he didn't hold her responsible for anything, not in a negative way anyway. She would always be his general.

"I'm glad you get the change to be her mother again" he said softly, "And that she has the chance to get to know you. And me I guess" he added pulling back a little to give her a small grin. It was strange to suddenly have a sister but not unwelcome at all.

Leia have Poe's cheek a gentle pat. "I'm very glad you have the chance to know her as your sister too," she said. She smiled with relief and breathed out a bit. "Thank you, Poe."

He nodded, "Of course. I'm glad you could tell me" he added because it wasn't easy for her to do it, he knew that.

"I'm very glad I could tell you as well." She squeezed his hand. "I'll leave you to it. I - well, I hope you know I'm here for you if you need anything at all. I consider you my family too."
