Who: Bucky Barnes and Mako Mori
What: Fluff. No, it's actually fluffy.
Where: Rec Room
When: Sometime not too long after this conversation
Rating: TBD - probably low
Status: Incomplete

So even after being on this ship for a few months, Bucky still felt a bit at a loss. Recovery wasn't a straight line from A to B; he'd discovered that it was often two steps forward and five steps back. It wasn't easy, but he'd been learning how to take the small steps of progress more than falling back. Though he'd attended a few of the group outings and tried to regularly spend time with Steve and Peggy- though maybe not as often with her as he should, Bucky still hadn't really spent much time getting to know his new shipmates. The thought of the tribbles had made him smile, and then hearing Mako talk about only having military grade items struck a chord. He'd only recently begun to realize how much he liked soft things, things that felt nice or smelled or tasted good. He'd been working on acknowledging the nice things, on realizing that it was okay to want something a little frivolous sometimes if only because it made you feel good.

So. A new friend and sharing of some of those kinds of nice things was like two birds with one stone. Right? Or something like that. Still, Mako had been kind enough over the network, and he thought he might have seen her round in the mess hall or something. So after they'd messaged back and forth, he rummaged about and pulled out a well-worn sweater, the fabric soft. It wasn't overly thick, so she'd probably be okay to wear it, and a new blanket he'd picked up in Yorktown that was a little fuzzy and felt nice and looked pretty good on a blanket fort. It was also great when he made his bed into a nest and he wanted something to curl up on top of. Folding the two, he made his way out to the rec room, pulling up a book on his tablet as he sat down on one of the sofas and settled in to wait for his new maybe-friend.

Mako was used to to ship already. It was a lot like being back home, except there was lots of food to go around. There weren't many familiar faces, which made her sad. Not even a dog to pet-- maybe that's why she was so quick to pick up the tribble. It didn't exactly remind her of Max, but it was a pet still.

She was wearing a lot of the stuff the crew had given her, military type clothing, uniforms, useful and boring. Like everyone else's. Back at the Shatterdome, she had a few cardigans she'd wear over her jumpsuits. Something warm and fuzzy, something that showed she was different.

Mako didn't know this Bucky fellow, but he was very welcoming. And attractive. He reminded her of Raleigh, and she adored that man.

She walked into the rec room slowly, and saw the man on the couch. "Mr. Bucky?"

Bucky had been reading something that reminded him of the old nickel novels he used to read as a kid. Sci-fi, although some of the science and things there seemed silly compared to the things he'd seen. He wasn't so invested in it, and he looked up when he heard his name.

"Miss Mako?" he asked, setting the tablet aside and pushing himself to stand, smiling softly and trying to keep his posture loose and demeanor relaxed. "It's really nice to finally meet you."

That was him, all right. He was handsome in person, too, and Mako felt herself blush a little. "It is nice to finally meet you, as well." She wondered if they should shake. No, no shaking.

"Did I interrupt your reading?"

"Not at all," Bucky replied, shaking his head. "I wasn't really focusing on it, to be honest with you." He smiled a little when he noticed her faint blush, although he wasn't quite sure what she would have to be embarrassed about. He was also surprised that she was being so nice- although maybe she hadn't noticed his arm yet. He wasn't sure. Still, there was no need to jinx it.

"Would you like to sit? I've got- well, these for you. The sweater's soft- feels like fleece, almost, inside? But it's clean. So's the blanket."

Mako nodded and sat beside him, avoiding the tablet. She took the items from his hands gingerly. "Aw, wow. They are soft." She held them to her face for a second and smiled at him. It was then she noticed the arm, and she put her hand to it gently. "Was this an accident or on purpose?"

Bucky moved the tablet to a small table nearby as she sat, smiling as he watched her hold them up to feel them. The smile faltered as she reached for his arm and he looked down to it, worrying his lower lip as he considered just how to respond.

"It wasn't an accident, exactly. But I didn't ask for this arm, either." He frowned a little, not sure of how much she might be willing to listen to. "I fell off a train, in the middle of a snowy mountain range. It was during a war, and the other guys found me, took me, and I got this as a prisoner of war."

It was the shortest, most decent way he could put it without getting too worked up or into too much detail. "But it's- you know. I've gotten used to it."

"It's good craftsmanship. Not that the other guys are any better than your guys-- I'm just saying, it looks good. What does the star symbolize? We had Russians at the Shatterdome-- is it Russian?"

She pulled the sweater over her head and over her uniform. It made her hair stand on end.

"Russian, yeah. I was taken by the Russians, turned into a weapon." Bucky swallowed heavily, looking down to his hands in his lap.

He smiled to her as she pulled the sweater on. "I hope you like it. It's one of my favorites."

She could tell he didn't want to talk about that, so she turned her attention to the sweater.

"And you're letting me borrow it? I feel special!"

"Yeah, I've got others," Bucky replied, a little relieved that she was willing to change the subject. "I don't mind, though. I just- you said you haven't had anything like this in a long time and I wanted to share, you know? Maybe that sounds weird, I'm not sure..."

"No, it's not weird. It's very sweet." She smiled at him, and pulled the collar up around her neck so that it touched her chin. A little like a turtle going into it's shell. "Thank you, Bucky. Everyone here is so kind to me."

"Why shouldn't they be?" he asked curiously, unable to help a small smile as she pulled the collar up. He was reminded a little of the way Steve used to do the same, back before the war, wearing Bucky's sweaters when it got cold. "But you're very welcome, of course."

"I am just used to being treated like everyone else." Though, it was true she was the leader's adoptive daughter, that never really got in the way of how people treated her. Especially after she made Gipsy Danger malfunction-- people treated her like she had the plague.

"I'll return it soon, I promise." She brought her feet up onto the couch and got comfy. "So you were a soldier before? I worked in a military division as well. So I know what it's like... I saw combat, too. In a giant robot, but still..."

Bucky nodded slowly. "I suppose I understand that." He himself had been used to being treated as something less than human, so it surprised him a bit at the kindness he'd seen in others on board.

"Take your time. I have others." Bucky smiled, then let the smile fade a little as she asked her next. "I was, yes. A soldier, then a weapon, and now...I'm still figuring that part out."

"Take your time," she repeated back to him. "You can figure out what you are while we are here. By the time we get somewhere good, you will know what you are."

She snuggled the blanket again, then began to put it over her knees.
