WHO: Loki, Mary Crawley
WHEN: 226403.27 / late night
WHERE: Hallway wanderings
SUMMARY: Adjusting to this new reality.
WARNINGS: N/A

While his initial response to his arrival in this place - and the examination, and the taking of his weapons (more on principle than genuine concern; he hardly needed weapons to defend himself) - was one of first confused indignation, followed by a seething fury, Loki had managed to tone down his temper when faced with the fact that this did not seem to be a hostile situation. It was elaborate, for certain, and seemed like some kind of game someone was playing with him - but he knew of no one who would try to toy with him in this way, let alone anyone who could, and-

-and, realistically, as problematic as this was - and it was very, very problematic: Asgard now left without a ruler, left vulnerable during a time of impending war - this could only lead to either his mother leading the kingdom while her husband slept, lacking both of her children not that he was ever truly hers and with a war on her doorstep… Or else someone would go and retrieve Thor, and that would be far worse, who knew what sort of mess Thor would leave.. as problematic as this was, this place seemed to be welcoming and quiet, and Loki was not about to object to a moment’s peace to think some things over.

For now, he was still. Gathering his bearings, gathering information. He would likely soon be searching frantically for a way to return to Asgard - some new spell, perhaps, or some sort of magical alteration of their technology... His calls to Heimdall had been useless; his paths between spaces had led him nowhere useful, slipped him in and then back out of this plane without so much as a glimpse of home, just a flash of void and then stars and then ship.

Loki had not done much exploring, immediately after he had been cleared to leave the arrival area. He had retired to his room, grateful to find it quiet and empty, and simply poured over his thoughts. He had a lot of them - things were… complicated, right now. They would forever be complicated. He no longer knew where he belonged or what he wanted, who he cared for or who cared for him - and who saw him as a pawn and a monster.

Once his thoughts had hit that point - monster that parents tell their children about at night - he switched to the thoughts of others, skimming over this glowing tablet, first at the things the others on this ship were saying, and then over the other files on the device - maps, information about the world, entire books contained within this small item. He was not certain he liked it, but he begrudgingly admitted to himself that it was certainly convenient.

Once he had grown bored of that, as well (perhaps not bored, no, more like his eyes grew tired from the light of the device in his hands, something he found very irritating indeed), Loki decided he would use the map he had committed to memory to wander for a while. A brief shimmer of magic and his apparel shifted. Gone was the gilded armor of a king, replaced by something softer and less imposing - at least, that was how it appeared. Loki was not yet prepared to risk vulnerability in this place, as safe as they had made it seem - it could still be a trap. What manner of trap, he had no idea, but he did not wish to be unprepared.

Loki wandered down the halls, gait a measured parody of ease, head high, expression a schooled disinterest. He was endlessly curious about this place, the magic behind his arrival, the magic he could sense in small sparks behind some of the doors he passed by - but he was not about to make that obvious, not yet. Not until he was certain that would not be his demise.

Despite the fact that there was a sleep cycle on the ship, there was no real time when everyone was asleep. The ship may have run on auto pilot, but there were certain screens that needed to be monitored and tasks that needed to be done, so someone was always awake. Tonight, one of those someones was Mary.

Not because she was monitoring any screens, but because she found that she could not sleep. She had tried reading for a while, but found reading on the PADD to be difficult. It wasn't the same as a paper book, though those were hard to find on board the ship. She decided to take a walk in order to hopefully clear her mind and get herself to sleep.

Mary debated getting completely dressed again, but in the end just decided to throw a satin robe over her nightgown. It was probably improper, but most people here didn't care and she couldn't be bothered. She didn't expect to run into many people anyway.

She wandered aimlessly down a ew of the halls, seeing where her feet would take her when she came upon a man that she didn't recognize. He must be a traveller, since he wasn't wearing the Starfleet uniform. Mary nodded at him slightly. "Good evening."

Making his way through the halls, Loki’s thoughts kept him distracted enough that the sound of the woman's voice was almost jarring, even as quiet as it was, and his initial response to her greeting was an icy - “Is it?” before he could quite reign it in.

A half-second’s pause, and he stopped walking, expression shifting to something between embarrassed and apologetic. He was a prince, a king, he wasn’t meant to be sniping at passerby and acting for all the world like a petulant child simply because he wasn’t in the best of moods. Not here, not with strangers who, here, were in a similar situation as he.

“Ah. My apologies, my lady. I did not intend to be… rude.” He cannot afford to offend, here. He cannot afford enemies. Not until he knows who his true enemies are, at least.

[OOC: So sorry for the delayed response, it's been a bit of a week. <3!]

It was a bit of a harsh and unexpected response, though at least he did apologize. Mary wrapped her robe a bit more tightly around herself.

"Of course. You are new here, aren't you?"

Mary had just started working with the Traveler Liaison Office on board the ship, so she was starting to keep up on new arrivals. Peggy had processed this man, so he and Mary hadn't officially met yet. The man was tall and carried himself proudly. He was one of the few to call her by her title right off and she wondered how he knew. Perhaps he came from a time when titles were more common.

“I am,” he responds with a brief nod, “I arrived here ...well, I suppose it was a day ago, now. The passage of time is different, here.” It was - distinctly faster, days bleeding into a mass of moments and minutes while also stretching on endlessly due to the lack of environmental signs of its passing.

“And yourself? Have you been here for very long?” Trying for conversational, Loki’s tone slid carefully towards friendly, the beginnings of a polite smile on his face effortlessly. It would be good to get to know some of the others here. Allies, at the very least, would be invaluable - whether or not this place ever turned out to be a threatening place, it was never a bad thing to have people who trusted you in your proverbial pockets.

Different? That seemed odd. It didn't seem different to her, though she could admit that she still wasn't fully adjusted to the fact that there was no real "day" here. That was why she had some bouts of insomnia like this.

The man was smiling now, so that put her at ease a bit. Perhaps she had simply interrupted his thoughts. "About a month," Mary replied. "It does seem like it has been longer though." Some of the other people had been here even longer than her.

"A month," he repeated - not a question, not really - he believed her, but it still somehow carried a wondering, almost disbelieving sort of tone. Perhaps more concerned. A lot could happen in a month, regardless of how time worked back home versus here. In a month, Thor could have returned, torn the Nine Realms to bits fighting a war that would cost them far too much. In a month, his mother could have been killed trying to lead a war she didn't want to have to fight. In a month, there may be nothing left of the home that was never his and his secrets would all be spilling out without him there to keep them safely contained...

A month was too long.

"Is there truly no way to leave?" The question tumbles out a little more genuinely dismayed than intended, a little more vulnerable than he is entirely comfortable with. He catches it quickly enough, but it's already there - a weakness that, were he on the other end of the conversation, he would have latched onto immediately.

Indeed, a month. Mary wondered what had become of Downton and her son. She hoped that both of them were surviving in her absence.

"Oddly enough, someone just left recently, though none of us can figure out how or why. I can tell you that it has nothing to do with wishing yourself gone, otherwise I would be already." Mary laughed slightly. She hadn't picked up on any weakness, only a sad hopelessness, which she couldn't blame him for, considering that she often felt the same way aboard this ship.

So they were brought here and then cast away again with no explanations, were they? Loki bristled internally at this information, keeping his expression from growing too irritable for her sake. The idea that he was a plaything for some entity or organization with enough power to throw him through time and space without so much as a hint of where that power originated - that was not comforting. The fact that he could only be returned home when someone else saw fit - someone he could not see and could not reason with or manipulate or influence in any way whatsoever - only made things worse. He was essentially powerless at this stage in whatever game was being played, and there was little Loki enjoyed less than feeling powerless.

Loki offered a small smile once again, and a nod. "I assure you, my lady, I will find a way home, and I will be sure to inform you when I do. I am Loki," he offered a hand to take hers in a more proper greeting, "King of Asgard." The word king still tastes like dust in his mouth, doesn't fit right and fits all too well at the same time, but he has to get used to it, has to get used to embodying it. It is who he is, now.

That was certainly an interesting introduction. Mary gave him her hand, feeling a bit foolish for meeting him in a robe. "How do you do....? Forgive me, how are kings addressed in your land?" She wanted to do so properly. "I am Lady Mary Crawley. From England, if you have heard of it."

His accent sounded decidedly English though Mary had learned that didn't necessarily mean anything here. "And if you find a way to go home I would be most appreciative if you shared it."

Loki accepted her hand and pressed a kiss to the back of it without pausing even as she fumbled over his title and he drew back to shake his head slightly with a slight smile still in place, all manners and charm, because Thor was the golden one, but Loki could shine just as bright in his own way. "Loki will suffice, my dear. My kingdom is not here, and you need not concern yourself with the formalities."

England. Loki was not overly familiar with several realms - the ones Odin had forbidden further interference in, after the wars had rushed across them and created myth and legend and endangered many. Midgard was chief among those - anything that had been formed after around the time of his birth, he and the rest of Asgard knew little of.

"I am afraid I am not familiar with England," he responded, "It is an honor to meet you, however, Lady Mary. Perhaps in the future you can tell me of your home. I would enjoy hearing of it - and it may make it easier to find."

"Indeed," Mary replied with a smile. "You must not be from Earth."

She was getting used to that by now, which said something about how long she had been on the Enterprise. At least the man was acting like a gentleman now. A king was exciting, even if he wished to be informal with her. What noble lady did not want to befriend a king?
