RP: Time for a cuppa
Date & Time: 10 December 1998 | Mid-Evening
Post Type: RP
Open To: Private
Character(s): Pansy Parkinson, Draco Malfoy
Location: Hogsmeade
Summary: Window shopping date

Draco tucked Pansy's hand more firmly in the crook of his arm and smiled at her. "All right, Parks, where to next? Any other shop you'd like to examine?" They'd gone 'just looking' at practically every shop in Hogsmeade's high street, but he didn't think they were done. Not for a good while. There might not be hand-made Italian shoes or other such entertainments to buy here, but he knew Pansy, and knew they had a while to go yet.

It was lovely to see the shops open once again, and many of them decorated for the holidays. The number of boarded up shops had been steadily declining since the end of the war. Pansy wondered how some of her dorm mates could still bemoan the loss of the Dark Lord when it was obviously so much more enjoyable and less stressful now that everyone wasn't so desperately afraid. Yes, they had to contend with the Muggle-borns and such, but the opportunity to do something so simple as shop freely was far more important to Pansy. Especially when she could do that on Draco's arm.

"I thought we might as well look in all the other shops while we're here. You never know when something might catch the eye." She'd already seen a beautiful silk scarf in water colors that brought out the green in her eyes, an elegant swan feather quill, and a few odds and ends that she found very appealing. "I am starting to feel the chill, Draco. What do you say to having some hot cider at the Three Broomsticks before we continue?"

"Ah, well, we can't have that," he started, already planning to put his arm around her and snuggle up somewhere warm, then the rest of her question hit his conscious mind and Draco stumbled. He choked and came to a halt right there. Shaking his head until his fringe danced across his eyes, he cleared his throat and tried to speak. "Er. No. No, not the Broomsticks. How about Puddifoot's? We could get a nice cider there, I'm sure of it."

"Are you all right?" she asked, concerned when he choked and stopped. "I thought you hated all the frills at Madam Puddifoot's?" Besides which it was further away than the Broomsticks. "I don't think they offer cider." In fact, she didn't think they had anything even mildly alcoholic. Pansy wouldn't mind tea, but it seemed silly to her to go back the way they'd already come and said as much. "Tea would be fine with me. I don't see any reason we should go back that way, however."

Draco rubbed his thumbs across his rings and avoided looking at Pansy's eyes. While there had been a good deal of his trials that had made it into the paper and radio news, there was a great deal more that hadn't. Some of that included the specifics of a few of his crimes. Things like, oh, putting a local bartender under the Imperius and keeping her there for several months. Draco cleared his throat again and stepped closer to Pansy. He'd already made it damned obvious that there was something up. The next step was damage control. "I'll take you anywhere you like, Pansy. Just not the Broomsticks. Pick any other place you want. Hell, anywhere in England and we'll go there right now. Not the Broomsticks."

"I'm sorry, Draco. Of course. Madam Puddifoot's would be fine," she said contrite. "There's no need to swear at me." Pansy hadn't wanted to ruin their evening. Now she'd gone and upset him.

She turned and walked quietly beside him, not really bothering with the shop windows she'd been so wild about only moments before.

"No, no, no. No." Draco shoved his hair out of his eyes and swore under his breath, careful not to be vocal. She hated when he used foul language in front of her and he tried not to. "No, Pansy. Stop." He caught her arm and pulled her against the closest building, into the little corner formed where it sat further back from its neighbor. He cupped her cheek and leaned in to rest his forehead against hers so he could speak in a volume only she'd be able to hear. "Pansy, no. Don't ... whatever you're thinking, you're wrong. You don't need to apologize to me, and I'm feeling a bit of a bastard for putting that look on your face." He'd seen her expression drop when she turned and it had twisted something in his chest.

Draco caught her hands and held them both, then pulled her into a hug and rubbed his fingers down her spine. He wasn't sure why, but she looked like she needed a little comfort, and that was the best option he could think of right then. "Petals," he whispered to her, "I've got a very good reason for not wanting to go into the Broomsticks. I will tell you if you want to know, but I really doubt that you want to know."

She shook her head. She didn't think she had it wrong at all. "I was thinking you didn't want to go to the Three Broomsticks and I upset you by suggesting it. I'm sure you have your reasons. You don't have to explain yourself to me."

Draco brought her into a hug, and while she didn't really think this was the best place for it, she welcomed the comfort. He told her he did, indeed, have his reasons and she nodded. "No, you don't have to tell me why. I would like to know if it's a temporary thing or more permanent, so I won't upset you by suggesting it in the future." Pansy didn't like upsetting him.

"Permanent," he said, leaning back a little to meet her eyes. "At least, permanent as long as Rosmerta's still in charge of the place." Draco kissed the corner of Pansy's mouth and straightened up. "And I'm not upset. You make it sound like I'm a kid who fell and scraped his knees. Quite a bit more than that."

Draco shook his head and took her hand, lacing his fingers in hers. "Let's not let this ruin our date, all right? How about we go get something warm to drink? Sit and cuddle up for a bit?"

"That was not my intention," Pansy sniffed. "You are not a child." He was acting like one, afraid of something as innocuous as the Three Broomsticks, however Pansy assumed that it had something to do with not only Madam Rosmerta, but the Dark Lord, and thus let it be.

"All right. On one condition," she added with a small smirk. "I liked it better when you had your arm around me to keep me warm." She adjusted her scarf to keep the wind off her ears.

"Damn right," he said, adjusting his collar and lifting his chin. "All man." He winked at Pansy and shifted to put his arm around her waist, his long cloak draped over both of them. "There, better? Can't have you getting cold, can we? I'd have to warm you up and there's no place private in Braeburn to get that done properly."

"No, but we could ..." Pansy bit her lip and shook her head. That was too bold by far and she would be in deep trouble if they were found out. "Thank you for keeping me warm, Draco," Pansy hurried to say, hoping he'd not ask what she'd been about to say. Asking him a Quidditch question would hopefully distract him. "I'd like your help with Pere's present. You know what a Quidditch fan my little brother is." Pansy watched all of Slytherin's matches, but she wouldn't consider herself knowledgeable, especially not where young boys and Quidditch things were concerned.

Draco raised his brows. "We could?" Then Pansy hurried on to change the subject, and while he knew that's what she was doing - she wouldn't ask about Quidditch or anything to do with Pere unless she wanted him to switch topics - he let her. It was probably best not to think of or talk about anything that might lead to what they 'could' to do keep warm, Especially not after that embarrassing accident on the Astronomy tower. Safer topics. Gentlemanly behavior. No matter how frustrating it was.

"Gift for Pere, yeah," he said, nodding. "There's this new thing out this year. Set of figures, sort of a build your own team wossname. Famous players from history. Get a full team and they fly around and all that. Could help him start building one, if you liked."

An old woman passed by and gave them an evil look. Pansy resisted the urge to stick out her tongue at the hag. "That sounds perfect. Would we be able to find those here in Hogsmeade or would I be able to find them at Quality Quidditch?" She could pop in on her way to or from Ollivander's, she supposed. The things might be available by post as well. It was a good idea. Her brother liked his magical creature battle figures and this seemed similar.

"Should have them at Spintwitches, if you want to take a look tonight. Otherwise, yeah, they'd definitely be at Quality Quidditch." Draco tightened his grip around Pansy and glanced over his shoulder at the old witch. All they were doing was being a young couple out on a date. The nasty look had not been necessary at all. "Oh, speaking of presents, though," he said, brightening in an attempt to ignore the witch, "don't let me forget to write Mum and ask if Cook's willing to share the recipe she has for those triple extra choc biscuits she does every year. Or at least a batch of them. Rory would go bonkers over 'em, I can guarantee it."

For Rory. Of course. Pansy stiffened. She loved those biscuits but Draco wanted them for that cow Sinistra. Pansy was coming to loathe her Astronomy professor. "If you wish to give it as a present, then the recipe along with a tin, would be more appropriate than the recipe alone," Pansy told him a little coolly. "Ladies do not consider recipes by themselves to be proper presents." Whether Sinistra would or not, Pansy couldn't say. The woman was certainly no lady inviting male students into her private spaces.

"Oooh, in a tin, even. Brilliant, Parks!" Draco squeezed her shoulders and drummed his fingers on her upper arm. "See, that's why I need you along. You're brilliant and you think up things like tins. I'd have just dumped 'em on a plate and handed them over. Should I do it up in a ribbon and fancy paper, too? I mean, yeah, in the end it's just biscuits, but I don't want it to look like I didn't put any effort in, y'know? She's been great to me so far. Want to keep on her good side."

"A ribbon and a bow will suffice," Pansy sniffed. "You don't want to lead her on with anything too fancy. A nice tin with either a bow or some evergreens would be appropriate for one's professor." She was proud of herself for not emphasizing the last word. "If you'd like, I could see to the packaging for you." She see to it that it was nice while at the same time insuring it did not include anything that might be misconstrued.

They passed a group of carolers singing a Muggle song about street lights and stop lights. Pansy made a face. There were some very lovely yuletide carols that did not require the mention of eckeltricky. She wondered why they couldn't sing those.

"Lead her on?" Draco laughed, shaking his head. "What on earth are you talking about, Petals? God, sounds like you think I'm flirting with her through sweets or something." He had to admit Sinistra was quite attractive, and he always had been interested in brunettes, and yes, maybe she did have very lovely eyes, and nobody could argue with her tits. Her arse was a hundred times better, though, and--

Draco cleared his throat and blinked. Right. "There," he said, pointing at a little, brightly-lit shop between a milliner's and a cobbler. "There, look. Place to get a drink." The menu board standing outside listed hot toddies and ciders. Draco led Pansy towards it.

"I'm talking about Rory," Pansy finally snapped when Draco cleared his throat the way he did when he was thinking things he thought he shouldn't be thinking. In this case, he was right. "A professor you are calling by not just her first name, but a nickname. A professor you are socializing with in her personal space. A professor who's brunette with nice eyes, which you can't tell me you haven't noticed. A professor you're spending time with when..." When he could be spending time with her instead. "Drinks. Yes. That would be nice," she decided to let the subject drop. Pansy hadn't meant to say that much.

Draco's eyes widened and he stared at his girlfriend in surprise. He hadn't heard her snarling at him like that in ages. "Pansy, are you jealous?" With a startled cough, he drew her aside, wanting to clear this up before they went into a public shop. "Love, c'mon. I didn't realize-- Look, it's nothing like that. Shi-- Fu--" He growled and shoved his hair out of his eyes, then lifted her chin to meet her gaze. "Pansy, I'm not attracted to her. Yeah, she's pretty and she's smart, and she's nice to spend time with and everything, but I don't fancy her. I have to meet with her. It's one of the conditions of staying at Hogwarts rather than getting shipped off to prison."

Pretty. Smart. Nice to spend time with...

Pansy blinked back tears and closed her eyes so she didn't have to look at him tell her how wonderful their professor was. "If she's so wonderful, why are you with me?" Yes, she was jealous. She didn't want to be, but she was. Draco probably didn't have to worry about staying in control with an older woman. Pansy knew she was being a little unreasonable but he didn't tell her she was pretty and smart and nice to spend time with, that was for his precious Rory.

Startled, Draco sputtered and fought to find words. "What? Why? Why? Why am I with you? Because I love you." Draco slid his arms around her and cradled her close, bundled up in his cloak with his head bent to hers. "Pansy, I love you. I've been in love with you since we were kids. I want to grow up and grow old with you, always have. You're my lady, Petals. You're my girl. I don't-don't think of her like that. I don't want her. I'm not thinking about jumping her or-or-or some wild, uninhibited shag or-no. I don't think about anybody like that. Not even you. Well, I mean, I do, but I try not to, 'cause I shouldn't, but a bloke can't help himself sometimes, so maybe I do think about it, and--" Draco felt his face going hot and he swore under his breath. He was fairly certain he'd just made things worse.

"Oh, Draco. You say the most wonderful and the most confusing things," she said, wrapping her arms around him and letting his closeness comfort her. He put his foot in his mouth -- again -- but she was coming to understand that there things he wanted that he wasn't allowing himself to have or even to admit to wanting, and that was mostly because he was afraid of upsetting her. Draco wasn't someone used to denying himself. That he was trying to do what he thought he needed to do in order to respect her was really very sweet for all that his contradictions were confusing. "I think about --um, our wedding night and --ah, other times as well," she whispered. It was impossible not to do so and wonder how much better it would feel when it was his fing-- Pansy swallowed and forced herself away from that line of thinking. Draco wanted her, not Rory. Pansy focused on that.

"You're the only woman in the world for me," he told her quietly. "You're the only one I ever think about when I'm, er. When I let myself think about anything like that. Not her, not anyone else. You, Petals." Draco dipped and kissed the soft spot beneath her ear, shaking a little with the effort of keeping just to that, especially after hearing her say that she thought about their wedding night and other times. "Always you. Only you, love. Since the first time I-- Um." Since the first time he'd woken with his sheets in a mess and stuck to his skin. Since the first time he'd experimented just to see what it felt like on purpose and learned it felt astounding. Since he'd look at Pansy in class and be suddenly grateful for the heavy, shielding black robes. Draco straightened up, cheeks and ears pink. "It's always been you. Never will be anyone but you. Not any of the girls I ever flirted with because I wanted you to pay attention to me, or Astronomy professors, or Quidditch stars or anyone. Just you."

"All right, Draco. I believe you. I think we should have that drink now." If they didn't go inside soon, she'd consider dragging him off somewhere for some proper -- or improper -- kissing.

Just her, he'd said. Pansy filed what he said away for later. That was what she wanted. For it to only be her.

Draco kissed the corner of her mouth and let go of her to open the heavy door to the restaurant. He pushed it open and stepped in to hold it for her, smiling at the host waiting at the little podium just inside. His smile froze when the host gave him a glare. Draco wasn't sure what the problem was for a moment, then his chest tightened as the wizard's gaze went straight to his left arm and back to his face. The same face in the middle of a poster behind the podium, with his father, his uncles, his other associates all listed as well.

"Your custom is refused," the wizard said, voice close to a snarl.

Draco took a deep breath. "I just want a drink with my girlfriend."

The wizard came around the podium and Draco tensed. He took a step back, knowing he couldn't go for his wand. Fighting was definitely against his pardon. The wizard shoved him out the door and onto the step. "Death Eater scum," he said and slammed the door hard.

Draco ground his teeth. "C'mon," he said without looking at Pansy. "Place looked filthy anyway."

"Let's go. I don't feel like shopping any more." Who did that man think he was anyway? There was a time, she would have asked her father to find out. Now, all she wanted was just to be away from vile people like that. People might talk about peace and understanding, but they only meant for people like themselves.

Draco raised his head and stopped a sigh. Wasn't the first time that had happened, and it wouldn't be the last. From what he could tell, it was all right to hiss and hate as long as you'd kissed Dumbledore's arse at some point. "Yeah," he said quietly. "I understand. I'm sorry, Pansy. I'll make it up to you next date." Draco took her hand and led her away, heading back to Braeburn.
