RP: Pepper Up
Date & Time: 01 November 1998
Post Type: RP
Open To: Public to Senior Potions Students
Character(s): Horace Slughorn, Anyone Else?
Location: Hogwarts
Summary: Hogsmeade weekend had unexpected consequences.

Horace wasn't about to do it all himself. He'd even lost out on some of the Halloween Feast the evening before because the headmistress had insisted that the children in the infirmary required Pepper-Up more than he required an extra helping of pudding. He'd personally spoken to Poppy and all of the children in hospital had been soaked to the skin on Saturday when the fine day of their Hogsmeade visit was interrupted by a torrential downpour and cold snap. If any of them had bothered to look at their Prophets on Saturday morning, they would have seen the Weather Divination Report suggested such an occurrence likely. Horace did not see why he should be penalized for the young ones mistakes. None of his house had taken ill after all. None except the Quidditch team who had been out practicing that was. Oh, and possibly a few scattered Slytherins who failed to transfigure themselves umbrellas or cast an Impervious. Really, he couldn't be faulted for a dozen or so illnesses when all the children should have known how unpredictable weather can be in Scotland this time of year.

It also seemed like gross mismanagement on the part of the matron not to have ordered in an adequate supply of Pepper-Up for her needs. It wasn't like Poppy not to be fully prepared. Horace wondered if it wasn't some cost-cutting measure on the part of the headmistress who seemed to think that Horace was capable of brewing for the school in his spare time. Really, he had far too much to do to be bothered concocting potions on top of his teaching and grading. He was an old man after all. He was here only as a personal favor until a replacement could be found and he could once again return to the quiet of his retirement. Horace felt he'd earned his leisure.

And so it was that he'd determined his the Seventh and Eighth year students should be up to the task of brewing the additional quantity of Pepper-Up he'd been charged to deliver by that evening. "The instructions are on the board and in your books. Do heed the warnings and remember to use your gloves. Your fellow students are depending upon your work. There will be personal references written for each of you who manage usable batches that will stand you well with employers after your NEWTs. Begin."
