Rose and Oliver were sparring, but Rose’s head wasn't in the fight and it showed when she found herself landing on her ass. A second later, she kicked out her leg and tripped him, bringing him down to the ground with her, but instead of making a move to get up or to pin him or anything, Rose just looked at him for a moment, as if she was trying to make up her mind about something. The truth was that she hadn't been sure she was going to ask him about the island, especially about what Mara had told her. There were a lot of really good reasons for him to keep their history from her, not the least of which was the fact that she wasn't quite 18 yet and he was definitely a lot older than 21. He was even older than Dimitri, the mentor she'd fallen in love with in her own word, and she'd been told enough times how wrong that was. Honestly, it almost seemed easier to ignore what she knew that risk having more of those conversations. The problem is as that Rose had never been great at doing what she should. “Were you ever going to tell me?” she asked him, seemingly out of nowhere. He had wondered if she knew. Oliver had run into Luke the same night he’d arrived, after he’d talked to Rose. He hadn’t asked him not to tell Rose their history because he knew that neither Luke or Mara would say anything to her unless she asked. Oliver shouldn’t have been surprised that Rose had put two and two together. She might not be the exact same person he knew but she was still Rose. “I hadn’t actually thought that far in advance,” he said, sitting up and looking at her. “I knew that Luke and Mara wouldn’t tell you without asking me but I wondered how long it would take you to figure it out. Didn’t take you that long at all.” Oliver paused a moment and looked at her. He had a feeling he knew what she was thinking so he said “I’m 29 by the way. I’m guessing that’s what you’re wondering. My birthday is in May but on the island nobody knew what the hell month is was so who knows but I was 29 when I got there so we’ll go with that.” How did you ask someone if they were legal? And if she was, would she even care here? He wasn’t going to push his luck, he knew that much. “You were already eighteen when I met you.” There was no need to tell her the rest of it, that he knew she’d been in jail, accused of a murder she didn’t commit. “You told me about what you are though, about being a dhampir and a Guardian.” “Mara told me after I asked,” she admitted. “But I figured out there was something that first night, right after I met you. You said friends, but that wasn't a just friends look your were giving me.” At least he wasn't trying to beat around the push and deny it. Rose shrugged when he mentioned his age. “I'm almost 18,” she admitted, but she left it at that. “I don't need the whole you're too old for me, it's totally illegal lecture. Been there, done that, not really interested in reliving the whole you're just a child and I'm not thing. I get it, believe me.” She didn't know if she was even interested, but either way, she definitely didn't want to talk about the whole age difference thing. Really, she could do that math herself. “I wasn’t going to say any of that because it doesn’t matter. When I was eighteen, I acted like I was twelve so a number is a number.” he gave her a shrug of his own. “That kind of stuff doesn’t bother me. The illegal only bothers me because I’ve spent a few nights in jail and I hated it but that was because I was stupid enough to drive drunk and high, not because I was dating underage girls. And you’re different. You’re not like most girls I’ve met that are your age. Even when I was your age, girls weren’t like you. And that’s not a bad thing.” “You weren’t?” Even as he explained, Rose was surprised. She was so used to not being taken seriously. To being seen as just a kid. Technically, at 17, she still was one, but with everything she’d seen and experienced, she definitely didn’t feel like a kid. That had been true even before the Agency, but after the things she’d gone through since being recruited by them had only made her feel less child-like. Hell, they had her running one of the teams here. Still, most of her life, people hadn’t really taken her seriously. Adults, especially. She was kind of surprised to find Oliver did. “So, why didn’t you tell me about [...] us, then?” she asked him. She’d thought it was probably the age thing, but if he didn’t care about that, she didn’t know why he hadn’t just told her they’d been involved. “Because you didn’t experience that,” he said. “It wouldn’t mean anything to you and above all else, Rose, I like you as a person. We were friends on the island before anything ever happened between us. If I’d told you about us, I was afraid that I’d have to give up the best part of that which was being your friend...not that the other part wasn’t amazing,” he grinned at her. “But I wanted you to decide whether or not we could be friends here without knowing about anything else.” “It's not like I would have felt obligated to sleep with you here,” Rose countered, rolling her eyes a little. A part of her did get it, but she also didn't like being left in the dark and she couldn't help giving him a hard time about it, at least a little bit. “Besides,” she shrugged, “my friendship isn't so fickle as that.” How she felt about him now, she wasn't sure, but she thought they were friends now, at least. “Good to know,” he replied. “Because you can’t have too many friends when you’re fighting off the apocalypse. At least I think that’s what we’re supposed to be doing isn’t it?” Oliver knew that things would be different here between him and Rose but he was okay with that. As long as they stayed friends, he wasn’t going to complain. “Yeah, that’s what we’re supposed to be doing,” Rose said, shaking her head and laughing a little. She was glad to have him as a friends, too, and without warning, she jumped to her feet, holding out a hand to help him up. “Come on, let’s go find something to eat,” she said. “I’m starved.” “You’re always starved,” he said, laughing. “That hasn’t changed from one dimension to another. Come to think of it, I’m hungry too so food sounds like a good idea.” “I think that’s probably the one constant of the universe,” she agreed. What she’d learned about their history in the place he’d come from was something she was just going to file away and not worry about until later. For now, she figured she’d just focus on hanging out and enjoying that. |
