WHO: Rose Hathaway & Oliver Queen
WHAT: Sort of Reunion; Yaaay Multiverse
WHEN: During the great IJ downtime
WHERE: Right outside Agency Housing
RATING: Low/No real warnings
Rose was still sore from the attack on Caleb, which might have been understating things a little, considering she’d cracked a couple of ribs and was covered in cuts and bruises. She probably could have gotten someone to heal her up, but there were others who didn’t heal faster than normal people, who weren’t as tough as her, and she knew she would get better eventually. She’d had a lot worse than this, she knew, so she was sucking it up and trying to get out there and do what needed to be done. A lot of the damage was healed by now, anyway. Evidence of the deeper cuts lingered, but she looked a hell of a lot better than she had a week ago. Slipping outside to get some fresh air, she looked around at the increasingly deserted town. It was still kind of surreal being here in Sunnydale, a place that by rights shouldn’t have even been real. Even being able to call Buffy a friend didn’t make it any less weird that all of this was real. The fact that it shouldn’t have been didn’t make it any less frustrated that they’d lost so many, that Xander had still ended up with his eyes gouged out and that some things seemed to be unchangeable. The reckless part of her wanted to rush out and do something, but she held that at bay, knowing she’d only get herself killed if she acted too rashly. Going outside was risky enough when people were being attacked by bringers on a regular basis. Sighing, she’d just been about to turn and go inside when she saw a guy she was sure hadn’t been there a moment ago staring at her. Oliver had had the briefing, he’d been told what was going on but he had no idea why he’d been sent here or how for that matter. He hadn’t asked to leave the island but apparently someone somewhere thought that was a good idea. Now he found himself in Sunnydale of all places. He remembered watching the show with Tommy but mostly because they were twelve year old boys and Buffy was hot. Oliver was about to walk down the street and see if he could find someone who might help him out when he saw a familiar face. “Rose?” he said, disbelief in his voice. “What happened to you?” He’d seen her that morning at breakfast and she had looked like she always did but now? Well she looked like she’d had the crap beaten out of her, although he had a pretty good idea that wasn’t the case. She’d given as good as she’d gotten, there was no doubt about that. He walked over to her, resisting the urge to take her hand. There was something about the way she was looking at him, there was a clear warning there so he didn’t do it. Arms folded in front of her, Rose looked at him warily. “Who the hell are you?” She should have known how this whole multiverse thing worked by now, she should have figured out that maybe he knew her from somewhere else, but here was this guy looking at her like they were friends. No, more than friends. He was looking at her like she really meant something to him even though she’d never seen him before in her life. “I’m Oliver Queen,” he told her. “And I’m not even going to bother telling you that we know each other from somewhere else. The look on your face pretty much explains that.” In fact, he wasn’t convinced she wasn’t going to punch him but he thought he knew her well enough to know that she wouldn’t actually do it unless he provoked her and he didn’t plan on doing that. “We’re...well we’re friends where I come from. We hang out quite a bit, we live on an island actually although not the island that I was shipwrecked on but you wouldn’t know anything about that.. Anyway that’s who I am.” He left out the whole part about being in love with her and there was certainly no need to go into any of the other stuff he knew about her because he had no way of knowing exactly what point in her history she came from. She looked a little bit younger but she was also beat up pretty badly so that could be deceiving. “Friends?” Rose really wished she could do that cool lifting one eyebrow thing Spock and Dimitri both used to do. The look he’d been giving her a moment ago hadn’t been a friends look and she wondered just how close they’d been. He looked kind of old for her, older than Dimitri, even, but she couldn’t deny he was hot. And, well, Rose sometimes gravitated to older people, especially after Mason. Most of her closest friends here were in their twenties. “You’re here with the Agency?” she asked. She assumed he was if he’d come here from some other world. Actually, she wondered if it was the same island Mara and Luke had been on. Mara had recognized her, too, which had been weird, but slightly less creepy coming from someone her own age. “I am. I don’t remember agreeing to come anywhere with them but yes, I’m with the Agency,” Oliver shook his head. “What exactly is going on here? I know they gave me a briefing but those aren’t usually anywhere close to being the whole truth. What can you tell me?” She obviously had no idea who he was so she wasn’t going to tell her the whole story. Oliver didn’t think she would take it very well judging from the way she was looking at him. “You ever watch Buffy as a kid?” she asked him, half kidding. The explanation of this mission would be a lot easier if he had and she was relieved to see him nod before she continued. “We’ve basically been dropped in the middle of season seven. First evil, dying potentials, all that crap. This-” she gestured to her healing bruises and the cast on her arm- “is a souvenir from Caleb. Our job is to get them out of this with fewer casualties, but so far we’re doing a crap job of that.” If she sounded a little bitter and frustrated, it was probably because she was. It felt like they weren’t changing a damn thing, the way things were going. “Tommy and I watched it almost every week,” he said. “And if I remember correctly, season seven pretty much sucked. But I was older than and I was probably half drunk when I was watching it.” There was more than a decent chance that he had been. “So we’re supposed to keep Sunnydale from being sucked into a hole? Good luck with that.” “Probably not going to change that part, but they're hoping we can save some lives, get more people out of this without dying.” She shrugged. “So far, we haven't had much luck. Caleb kicked our asses, Xander still lost his eye, people still died. We have to keep trying, though.” “I suppose we do. I guess anything we can do to help or they wouldn’t have brought us here.” Oliver still wasn’t entirely convinced that it was a good plan but he’d decided to stay out of sheer curiosity.. “Are you going to make me stand outside or can I come in? Because if there are things out here that want to kill me, I’d really rather be inside the building.” “What?” Rose teased, “you don’t think I can protect you?” She stepped aside so she wasn’t blocking the door. She might be good, but that didn’t mean she could take one of those ubervamps easily on her own. Coming out here alone had been pretty stupid. “Oh I know you could protect me. I don’t doubt that one bit,” he said. “But i don’t feel like fighting anything right now and you look like you’ve done enough fighting for at least a few hours.” Oliver couldn’t help but tease her, it was habit but he had to remind himself that this wasn’t the Rose he knew and she might not take it that well. “This?” Rose asked as she opened the door and walked through it, expecting him to follow. “This is nothing. I’ve had worse.” Technically, that was true. She’d just usually had someone around to heal it a lot faster most of those times. That didn’t keep her from downplaying the injuries now. Besides, she could probably still kick ass, even with one arm in a cast and her ribs taped up. “So, what do they have you doing?” she asked him conversationally as they started to walk down the hall, heading toward the rooms. She didn’t know which one was his, yet, but she figured he’d say something if that’s where he wanted to go. Oliver knew she’d had worse but he wasn’t going to say that. She wasn’t convinced that he actually knew her anyway and he’d have to find a way to do that. He couldn’t possibly be lucky enough to find someone here who knew him from the island, could he? “I’m on Covert Squad Bravo,” he said. “They told me my room was 302 so if you could help me find that, that’d be good. Then I guess I can find whoever I’m supposed to be working with and ask them what I need to do.” Rose nodded. “That's Bobbi's squad, she's cool. You can worry about that tomorrow,” she said, about the job as she pointed toward the stairs, “but you're on three. My room's down there,” she added, pointing toward her own door. She could show him the rest of the way to his quarters or show him around Sunnydale and catch them up on what they’d done so far. “If you want to brave it, I can show you around town in the meantime, but it’s dark and we might run into an ubervamp or some bringers if we do that. I can just show you your room and let you get settled if you want,” she offered. “I don’t think I’m ready to fight anything just now,” he said. There was a lot to process, including the fact that Rose had no idea who he was and he wanted to figure out how to remedy that. “So showing me the room is fine. You can show me around town in the morning if you don’t mind. Seeing it on TV and actually being in it are two different things. Two very strange things,” he said with a laugh. “You’ll get used to it,” she said, grinning at him before leading the way. |
