My point was, I've seen this happen before, charismatic leader with a firm belief in his own convictions who just happens to have the power to back those up.

That's one example, There are a few more. Look at the history of Rome if nothing else, there are so many of them throughout history.

History truly does repeat itself, no matter the setting

Well, yes. Rome had a lot of very interesting characters.

And, history can be manipulated by those who live long enough. As we've proven time and time again.
