Paris, at least the little she had managed to see in their short time there, was amazing. There was a part of her that wanted to stay forever, to get as lost in the city as she felt on the inside. To be able to stay somewhere she wasn't one half of a duo of grief where there used to be a trio, where she could continue to ignore the real world and all the pain and sadness and anger inherit in it. She had thoughts of how good it would be to just keep going, hop on a train - or a bus or a plane - and just disappear. There was a whole big world out there and like someone had once told her, it was waiting for her. She'd never felt so far from home and it so many ways it was the most freeing feeling she'd had in years. Whatever was happening back there she couldn't even do a damn thing about so what did it matter if she took off and never looked back. There was a bigger part of her though that knew she couldn't do that. That it was exactly what it sounded like, running away. Maybe it would work for a while, maybe she could forget for a while - but at the end of the day nothing changed. Bonnie would still be gone, she would still have no clue how to deal with any of what had happened over the past few weeks back home without Stefan there to ground her. And, more recently, knowing she'd probably ruined the only friendship she'd managed to find since being pulled through the rift in favor of distraction sex and not being sure if she could ever trust the people who had been designated to watch over those pulled through. Elena was there now and while Caroline knew Damon was a welcome surprise for her friend she would need her soon none the less. So yeah, while the past few days had been a welcome break from reality, she knew she couldn't ignore it forever. Even if she really wanted to. Caroline watched the city below her from the balcony of the hotel room. Mystic Falls felt a million miles away and she had no idea how she would ever be happy there again after seeing all this. If she ever managed to find her way back that was. At the sound of footsteps behind her she turned her head to look at Derek for a moment before her gaze settled back on the Eiffel Tower lit up in the distance. "I need to go back," she said after a moment, quiet and defeated almost. "I can make sure the room's yours for as long as you want," she offered, "or get you going to wherever you wanted to go." |
