Jaina was starting to feel restless. She’d been spending a lot of time indoors while she healed from her injury after the dragon had smacked her with its wing and she was slowly going crazy. Normally she would have been up and about the next day but something about this place had messed up her healing trance. She wasn’t sure what it was but it had to be the magic which wasn’t something she was used to. While there was magic in her world, it wasn’t common and aside from the witches on Dathomir, Jaina didn’t know anyone who practiced it. Whatever it was, she was just grateful that it hadn’t entirely shut down her abilities because that would be like being blind.
Today she had woken up feeling much better and decided to go out for a walk. She had been meaning to check out the bookstore since she had seen very few actual books in her life. Most everything was holo novels or holo vids and the books she had seen had been ancient texts at the Praxeum. It wasn’t a long walk but the area of town they lived in was rather small to start with and she hadn’t gotten far when she saw a familiar form walking into the bookstore. It couldn’t be. Could it? “Chewie?” she said aloud, disbelief in her voice. She quickened her pace and entered the bookstore and looked around.
“May I assist you?” the man behind the counter asked her. Jaina looked over at him and shook her head, making her way toward the back of the store. Maybe Chewie was back there. She turned down an aisle and saw him again but this time, she was sure he had seen her. Hurrying toward him, she was ready to throw her arms around him but he wasn’t there. Jaina shook her head, wondering if she was still having side effects from her injury although the dragon hadn’t hit her head. She had made it back to the front of the shop and stopped at the counter.
“Did you see a seven foot tall furry creature,” she hated calling Chewie a creature since he was more human than some humans she knew but she doubted this man knew what a wookie was. “He came in just before I did. You couldn’t have missed him.”
The man looked at her and rolled his eyes. “Madam, I assure you I would have remembered if I’d seen anyone that was seven feet tall come in the door. I believe you are mistaken. Do you need some water, perhaps? Or maybe you should sit down.” Jaina sighed and shook her head. “No, it’s fine. Thank you.” She left the shop, hoping that the man would forget the crazy woman who’d come in off the streets since she would like to go back and visit the store again.
She spent the next half hour wandering the streets trying to find Chewie. Or to be more exact, trying to catch up with him. She saw him plenty of times but every time she got to where she swore he’d been, nothing was there. Finally, she stopped and sat down on a bench in front of a small shop. “What the hell is going on here?” she said softly. “I know I saw him. I know it.” For a few moments, she sat there trying to gather her thoughts and then she stood up. Whatever this place was, it was messing with more than her Force abilities, it was messing with her mind and Jaina didn’t like that one bit. “Might as well go home,” she said and with a sigh, headed back for the apartment, more curious than ever about what this place was.
