Scene: Peter & Tony
Who: Peter Parker & Tony Stark
What: Are you who I think you are?
Where: Huddol Street
When: Backdated to April 7th
Warnings: No Way Home spoilers, probably.

Peter had sort of assumed the whole 'hole in the multiverse' situation was the kind of thing that only happened once. Definitely to one person, anyway. Definitely definitely in the space of three months.

So it had been a bit of a surprise to climb in through the window of his apartment, and emerge on a street in Cardiff in 1999. He was just glad he'd had a change of clothes in his bag.

The wizard (obviously there was a wizard. There was always a wizard) who had met him had seemed about as baffled as Peter felt. There had been a little while where he'd had to try and convince the guy that he wasn't 'Mr Potter' - whoever that was - but eventually he'd been pointed in the right direction, with a new phone and a few scraps of information. Now Pete was wandering down what had to be the most insane street he'd ever seen, torn between flicking madly through his journal and staring at everything going on around him. It was only the familiar, tingling feeling lurking under his skin which had prevented a major collision.

"Oops. Sorry," Peter muttered, for perhaps the fifteenth time, spinning sharply on his heel without breaking his stride, barely glancing up from the book at the figure he'd narrowly avoided bumping into. But it was during that glance that he spotted something. Or rather, felt something.

Peter's gaze snapped up so quickly that it almost hurt, and he whirled around. Where was... there. Journal forgotten, the young man broke into a run, easily dodging the other pedestrians and vaulting over a display of what looked like cauldrons in his pursuit of the rapidly retreating back. He bounded after him, his heart pounding in a way that had nothing to do with physical exertion and everything to do with...

"Mr Stark?!" He yelled, a little too loudly. Without thinking, Peter threw himself forward and grabbed the man's elbow, forcing him to turn.

The past few days had been a bit of a blur. For the first time since Tony had arrived in Cardiff months ago, alive and intact, time no longer seemed to drag by at an unbearable pace. Morgan's arrival had forced him to extricate himself from the dark places his mind had begun to inhabit. He was a father again, and with that came renewed purpose. He wasn't foolish enough to believe that this change would be permanent. He had seen enough of the visitors here come and go to know that there was no permanence in this place. Still, he would hold on to this extra time with his daughter with both hands while he could.

Said daughter had developed a particular liking of the magical sweets that had been gifted to her by Harry Potter, and while Nat kept an eye on her while she dozed off to story hour on the wizarding wireless, Tony had gone out to replenish their candy jar and pick up a few more things to help Morgan settle in.

Hearing his name called and then being made to do a 180 in the middle of the street, Tony's brow was scrunched up in a mixture of annoyance and surprise when he turned around. Seeing Peter's face on an English wizard still set him on edge a little, but it was no longer the gut-punch that it once was. "Where's the fire, Potter?" he asked, his expression softening a little. He couldn't help but like the kid. A bit of bias, for nostalgia's sake.

Again with the Potter thing. It would be annoying if it wasn't so weird.

"I'm not... it's me, Mr Stark. It's Peter!"

There had to be an easier way to do this. Perhaps he'd be able to think of it if he wasn't so stuck on the fact that he'd just bumped into Tony Stark, walking casually down the street like it was any other day. Mr Stark, whose funeral Peter had attended a year ago. Mr Stark, who he had missed every day since. Peter's heart was doing a weird tap-tappity-tap thing against his ribs, his stomach suddenly doing backflips. An ache, the one he knew all too well by now, was starting to bloom deep in his chest.

"You're not going to -" he started. "Look, I climbed through a window and then I was in Cardiff, right? And this Wizard was all 'Mr Potter, are you alright?' and I was like, 'who's Mr Potter?' And then - oh my god," Despite his very real intentions of being normal and not a complete idiot, Peter's hand had reached out of it's own accord and prodded Tony quite hard in the chest. "You're here. Like really - wait."

Something had just occurred to him, and the teenager looked sharply back up into the older man's face. What if this wasn't his Mr Stark? If Peter knew anything these days, it was that there was no guarantee that the people you met in alternative universes were who you thought they were.

Tony looked at the kid then. Really looked at him. Noticed the difference in his hair, the lack of glasses, the permanent air of excitability that always seemed to hang over his head. His eyes narrowed slightly. "Pete?" But then Peter was off and rambling, and there could be no doubt.

He glanced down at his chest where Peter had poked him, and when he looked back up again, the pained expression on his face had turned into joy. "Did you just poke me to make sure I wasn't a ghost?" He arched an eyebrow at the teenager. "What would you have done if your hand had gone through me?"

"I dunno!” Peter shrugged hopelessly, eyes wide. “It's a wizard world, right? You could have been!”

It definitely seemed like the right Mr Stark, anyway, from the arched eyebrow to the confident stance. It was all so familiar that it drove the breath from Peter's lungs. But did that mean that Tony knew about what had  happened on that battelfield, then? How long had he been here? What were they doing here?

Pushing all ‘whys’ and ‘what ifs’ aside for a moment, Peter stepped forward and hugged him.

More than grief, was the huge rush of relief that swept through him like a wave. Ever since he’d lost May, and especially after the whole thing on Liberty Island, Peter hadn’t really had anyone. Not someone who’d cared about what he got up to. Or even just cared about him in general. It had been easier, in a way, but it had also been… well, pretty lonely.

“It’s really good to see you.”

Tony smiled at Peter's response and was about to pull the teenager into a hug, but Peter beat him to the punch. He dropped the bag of gifts he had purchased for Morgan so that he might return the embrace with a proper, two-armed one. "It's good to see you, too, kid. I'm sorry we didn't have time for more than 'hello' last time."

Seeing Peter alive and well on the battlefield outside the Compound had removed the weight that had been bearing down on him ever since the he'd watched Peter disintegrate in his arms on Titan. At the time, Tony thought there would be a later opportunity to tell Peter about what he'd missed, regale him with the science of time travel, introduce him to his daughter. Instead there had been more goodbyes, even if Tony had been unable to voice his.
