SCENE: RON WEASLEY + HERMIONE GRANGER
WHO: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
WHAT: Ron is in for a shock when Hemione cuts school.
WHERE: Ministry Office on Hudol Street
WHEN: April 6, 1999

Ron was not an especially attentive penpal. During his Auror training, he had sent a few excited letters to Hermione describing what he had Harry were getting up to along with inquiries about how she was spending her time away from them. There was no hint of distrust or jealousy there. His questions were merely the result of missing her. Once he and Harry were assigned to the Rift anomaly, there was an uptick in letters, owing to the strange guests and occurrences. But also boredom. Ron was getting antsy, and since he didn’t want to voice his complaints to Harry, Hermione became the recipient of most of Ron’s whinging.

Until Harry’s father and Tonks arrived.

While their appearance seemed to set Harry on edge, Ron dared to feel hopeful that maybe one day it would be his brother who stepped out of the Rift.

On this particular day, however, another familiar face appeared in the Ministry’s satellite office on Hudol Street. Ron was slumped in the chair opposite a cluttered desk, his right elbow resting on the arm while he levitated a crumpled up piece of parchment with his wand and made it dart through the air like a seeker after a snitch. When he noticed Hermione, Ron lost all concentration and the parchment fell to the floor, very narrowly missing the wastebin. “Hermione?”

Hermione hadn't expected Ron to keep much of a schedule when it came to letters. Between work and, well, being Ron, she'd anticipated the post to be sporadic at best. They were always a highlight though, even when the bulk of uneven paragraphs were mostly complaints. Who'd have thought she would've ever missed that? Of course, fondness didn't stop Hermione from reminding him that being an Auror was more than bombastic heroics and that this assignment was unprecedented. The fact that he and Harry were capable adults also didn't keep her from worrying. The sky was blue, water was wet, and Hermione would forever be prone to fretting.

So, when she inevitably approached McGonagall about taking a sabbatical and making an appearance, the older witch was hardly surprised. In fact, she saw merit in the idea.

With little more than a charmed bag that was much bigger on the inside, Hermione arrived via the Floo, looking only slightly uneven as she stepped up to complete the necessary paperwork.

Ron was pleased that his less than smooth greeting had gone unnoticed by the witch. He got up from his chair quickly, but then walked casually to the desk where Hermione was standing and playfully pushed away the Ministry desk jockey attempting to process Hermione's arrival. "Are you skiving off school?" He asked immediately. Not much in the way of a hello, but the look on his face was one of surprise and pride, as he smiled brightly at her from across the desk.
