SCENE: TONY STARK + SHARON CARTER
WHO: Tony Stark and Sharon Carter
WHAT: A reunion of sorts.
WHERE: Dragon's Breath Pub
WHEN: March 29, late night
WARNING: Mentions of character death, more TBD

It had not taken long for Tony to revert to old habits. Not that he had ever really forsaken his night owl tendencies after taking up fatherhood. But midnight glasses of water or juice pops and bedtime stories were now things of the past, and as usual, Tony needed something to fill the void. Tonight it was scotch. Fortunately for Tony, the proprietors of the Dragon's Breath had quickly catered to the Muggle tastes of their new clientele, and he was poured a glass of a familiar single malt instead of something with a centaur on the bottle.

Unlike the others, he had been in no great hurry to pay a visit to the recently-appeared Avengers Compound, even though it had once been a pet project of his. That had been before everything had come crashing down around him, before his retirement, before the ruins of the Compound had become his deathbed. Already in mourning for the family he left behind, Tony did not need another more tangible reminder of the life he had given up. The people were enough. And they kept on coming. But never the faces he truly wished to see.

Tony threw back the last of his scotch and tapped his glass on the bartop to signal the bartender for another refill. He was in no hurry to get back to his now-empty flat in the magical building on the magical street in Cardiff, a quarter of a century from where he wanted to be.

Sharon was, perhaps, living a little more dangerously, trying one of the firewhiskeys that had been recommended to her. It sounded interesting, at any rate and she was all about trying new times. Sometimes, she was.

Stepping away from the bar with the drink in hand, she turned when she spotted Tony Stark in her peripheral vision. If there was a face she was happy to see here in Cardiff (besides Barnes', but that was a given), it was Tony's. She might hold a lot of anger about the way she'd been forced off the grid, but it hadn't been his fault and even if he hadn't done any more to rescue her from that fate, it was a hell of a lot harder to stay mad as a guy you'd known since childhood. Especially when you'd already mourned his loss, when he'd technically sacrificed his own life to save everyone.

"Hey, stranger," she drawled as she slid up next to her old friend. "Fancy meeting you in a place like this."

After the fallout with the Accords, Tony had done his best to shield the former Avengers from the worst of Ross' ire. He looked the other way when Natasha let Steve and Bucky get away; kept his mouth shut about where Steve had gone; and despite the former Avengers' betrayal, thwarted Ross’ attempts to stop Steve from successfully staging a jailbreak at the Raft. Between learning the truth about the death of his parents, the implosion of his team, and Rhodey's recovery, Tony was uncharacteristically near-sighted. Could he have done anything to help Sharon before she slipped off the grid? Did any of that still matter?

The bartender approached at the same time Sharon did, and Tony kept his eye on his glass until it was filled with three more fingers of scotch. He turned toward her then, and clinked his glass against hers as a form of greeting. "Didn't waste time in getting that drink, I see." It was not a criticism, and was said with a smile. "Next one's on me."

It mattered to Sharon. The Accords had been signed a long time ago, but Sharon had been off the grid the whole time. Maybe 10 minutes or so had passed since a pardon that had been a long time coming before she'd found herself in Cardiff and it was, frankly, a little too late.

But Tony wasn't the target of all of her anger and bitterness and if he had been, it wasn't something she could hold onto. Not with him.

"With a name it firewhiskey, I had to try it," she commented, grinning at the statement as much as the offer. Pausing, she took a sip. The drink was blessedly strong.

"How've you been, Tony?" It was obvious he and the others had been here a little while and he topped the list of who she wanted to catch up with.

"It doesn't disappoint," Tony replied. The voice of experience. He was a little more intimately acquainted with the liquor than he would openly admit. His first few days in Cardiff had been spent inside a bottle. Several, in fact.

It had been a little while. Over two months. Although the days seemed to pass incredibly slowly, it still seemed unthinkable that he had been here that long. That it had been that long since...... "Magical," Tony replied animatedly. The old Tony Stark public persona was on display, always so easy to slip back into. He took a sip of his scotch. "You get a chance to look around yet?"

"Good to know." Sharon took a sip, learning first hand that Tony was right. It definitely had a kick to it, but that was exactly why she liked it. She had a feeling this one wouldn't be her first.

Her brown lifted at the description of magical. She thought of pushing the issue, but talking about her own recent history wasn't that appealing, so she willingly let the topic shift to their present circumstances.

"A little bit. Not very much," she admitted. Probably not surprisingly, the bar had been one of her first stops after getting settled in her new apartment.

A smile formed on Tony's face as he watched her take a sip. He knew she'd dig it. She always did seem to like things when they fought back a little.

"It's a trip," he replied. "Feels like something out a theme park. I tend to spend most of my time out in the real world." The word real was spoken with quite a bit of sarcasm. Nothing really felt all that real to him. "Never been to Wales, actually. I always thought those pictures of Welsh place names were Photoshopped."

"Magical Wales doesn't really feel like is should be real," Sharon commented. It wasn't a place she'd visited, herself. Sharon had done some traveling in her previous life as an agent of first SHIELD and then the CIA, but Wales had never made the list. Now she wondered how much this version of the place had in common with the one in their own dimension. It wasn't a question that was easily answered.

"I guess I'm going to have to learn to actually pronounce them all now," she quipped. She still wasn't sure how to feel about this whole situation, but Tony being alive was a firm check in the pro column. "For the record, I am glad you're here."

"Impossible," he joked, taking a sip of his scotch. Not a word he ever used, but that was the joke, right? This whole situation seemed impossible. And yet, here they were. Here he was, on the side of the living. Tony raised his glass to toast Sharon's words. "That makes one of us." His voice was good-natured, his expression jovial even. But his eyes gave him away. They always did.

Sharon tilted her head at that comment, studying his face. She understood, in a sense. Tony was here without his family and she knew that had to be hard. She understood well enough how it felt to be cut off from the people you loved and she was certain it was that much worse when it was your own spouse and child, not that she had any frame of reference for that part.

The part she didn't understand, though, was knowing what the alternative was to being here. "You'd rather still be dead?" she asked bluntly. She didn't feel like beating around the bush.

"Is that the only other option?" Tony asked. "Here or dead?" He flashed her an empty smile. "I'd rather 'there and alive,' but this rift thing isn't real big on input as far as its itinerary goes." Tony had spent plenty of time his first month here harassing the magic types and doing his own bit of prodding, as much as he was able to anyway. When it had all come to naught, he'd allowed himself to be swallowed up by his grief, and Natasha'd had to pull him back out.

"I'm not sure the rift can change what's already happened in our timeline." It would be nice if it could. There was a lot it would be nice to change, but Sharon didn't believe in fairy tales. What had happened had happened and there was no use wishing for anything else.

"I do hope your family joins you, soon rather than later," she offered. She suspected he'd be less bitter about being stuck here if the people he loved were with him. It was a shame the rift didn't take requests.
