Who: Natasha Romanoff and Steve Rogers
What: Checking out the Compound
Where: The Avengers' Compound
When: 26 March
Rating/Warning: Low, probably some mild teasing

The compound wasn't a place that Natasha thought she'd ever see again. After all, on Vormir, she'd given up on seeing most everything ever again. Then arriving here, her world had once again shifted and she was making peace with those changes. But then....well, this happened.

She'd visited a few times already. It was strange to see things so pristine. It was definitely not from the time she last remembered it- it was cleaner. Newer. She would recon this might have been closer to the last time the Avengers were together...2016. A lifetime ago for a woman who'd gone on the run not long after that. Who took down the Red Room for the second time. Who fought aliens and then lived 5 years holding her broken family together.

But it still felt like coming home.

She'd quietly stepped through the halls, straight toward the hangar, where she'd indicated she would meet Steve. The Captain wasn't naive, exactly, but she wondered sometimes if he really thought through the long-term consequences of things he said and did. He was a good leader. A good man. He wanted to always do what was right, but Natasha's experience was that what was right was not always so clear.

She envied that about him. What it must be like to just know.

Shaking out of it, Natasha stepped through the doors and took it all in, feeling strangely at home again. Because this place was as close to home as she'd gotten in twenty years.

He hadn't honestly expected it would work. Not really. Why would it? But then he'd also figured there was no harm in giving it a shot. And now he was standing inside the compound. Not that it was quite how he remembered it. It all looked too new, compared to the last time he'd been there. Then again, he'd worded his wish. Was it a wish? Whatever it was that had allowed this, he'd worded it in a way he'd hoped would give them access to everything they might need.

The fact Natasha seemed so sure the Avengers wouldn't be needed here, but had asked for the Quinjet, spoke volumes. There was something almost comforting in seeing it sitting there as though nothing had changed. Despite what she might have thought, he did get where she was coming from. But he refused to sit back meekly waiting for something to happen because the locals held some prejudices against those of them without magic. Steve knew the value in being prepared. And like he'd told her, that's all this was. Being ready.

And maybe in a world where magic was so prevalent, some of that wouldn't matter. But it was better than nothing. And he wasn't going to apologise for that.

"So should I be saying something about you staring at the wall?" He called out to her as he stepped into the hangar. It was all far too familiar not to.

Natasha had expected him to be there, but gazing around the place, feeling that sense of nostalgia, it was easy to get lost in it. She smirked and gave the man a nod as she walked toward him. "Just thinking," she admitted.

"So, have you had a look at the whole place yet?" She wanted to know how long he'd been there. Had he arrived that much earlier than she had? She hadn't even had time to check out her old quarters.

"I'm kind of worried about what we might find in the fridge."

"Not yet." He glanced around the space as she moved closer. "Figured I'd find you here." And he'd decided he wouldn't mind the company. It wasn't just this place (though that was part of it), it was the people, too. Having so many friends here should have made it feel like home, but from the majority right now rather than familiarity, he got hostility. He didn't honestly know how to deal with that just yet, so he wasn't.

"I was hoping the fridge might be empty," he allowed with a smile at her comment, walking towards the front of the jet and the door he'd entered by.

"Anything in particular you've been waiting to see first?"

"Optimistic as always, Captain," Natasha had started to follow him toward the door. It was easy to fall in step beside Steve. Maybe it was because he was a natural leader. Or maybe it was because they were good partners.

"Well, I have a feeling restocking the kitchen is probably low on our priority list right now. As far as I can tell, the systems are operational, but there's no network to connect the whole thing. No Stark Towers or Satellites in the sky."

Which was her way of saying they were going to need Tony to make this work.

"The gym still looks good, though."

"I know, I know," his tone was full of obviously mock apology. "No stories about whales, I promise." He led them from the hangar, down a hall which took them in the general direction of the many smaller rooms, including the labs.

"Hardly surprising given the year. Still, I'm sure Tony can come up with something, if he's willing." He knew well enough he couldn't force the man. Nor did he have any interest in doing so. If Tony wanted a part of this, that was his choice.

"Well that's something at least. Now you're talking." It was said in that same fashion, as though she herself was displaying some level of optimism with the statement.

Natasha shook her head and considered how they were going to persuade Tony to be so willing. Because it wasn't going to be a matter of if, but when. They needed him to make this place work. And after her conversation with Steve, she knew the man wasn't going to stop until he had the Avengers back up and running. Truth be told, neither would she. She still meant what she said about caution, but she quietly agreed that Steve was right. Even if there are no threats on the horizon, getting the team back together gave her a sense of purpose.

This was her family. And she wasn't going to just give up on it.

"I already figured we could start running tests on the systems that don't require a satellite network in the meantime. Maybe even rig something to work with dial up." The thought almost made her cringe, though. "You think they have a Blockbuster video around here?"
