The one thing the Doctor tried to avoid was looking back. Because for someone alive as long as she had been, the past was always painful. Joyful, yes, but also painful. People always left. It was inevitable. It was life for the Time Lord. What gave her hope was the present and what she could do to make each day count. Had River asked? Honestly, she wasn't sure how she would answer that.
For a moment, she was worried she'd upset the other woman, but then- a hug. Yes. Hugs were good. The Doctor closed her eyes and took a deep breath, finally feeling calm.
